Well I've tried to answer the points raised in the context of the thread but I don't hold much hope considering that 33 refuses to recognise the original comment as homophobic. The way this is going at the moment it looks like it might lead to a ban but I'll bump the thread to conversation first if it continues to be this off topic.

I hear... let's see if he can step back a bit and unpack a little. There's definitely some problems in his posts, but I'm hoping that we can give him some room to address the issues you raised in the thread and clear things up.

I think I'm being a little bit syrupy, because I'm overcompensating for a tendency to want to DESTROY ALL IN MY FUCKING PATH.

Either the guy's literacy skills are extremely borderline or he doesn't care enough to take the time to make his writing clear. I, frankly, don't want to take the time to find out which is the case because what I have seen so far has been at once so boring and utterly repulsive. If he were a student of mine, I'd have no choice but to try to work with this, but as it stands, I hope someone else will sort it out. Ideally, I don't think we should give him much attention--maybe he'll just go away?

Well I spent quite a lot of time on one post, relating it to the topic etc. etc. that got no response at all so he can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.

I say let it descend into jokes.

I've tried being nice and patient ("syrupy" as entity succinctly put it), and I've even PM'ed a him a few times to try and make sure he didn't think I was having a go. But I'm losing patience. There have been some outstandingly thoughtful and giving comments made by (e.g. entity, banshee, and Anna de Logardiere), but he simply isn't reading what they're saying. Very sad. Very, very sad...

Anna de Logardiere, I hate to type this, but maybe you should change your name to Conan and then he'll listen?

I was thinking of "Iron John" myself...

go on. You'd soon learn to love it.

Seriously, though, much as I admire everyone's efforts (and it sounds weird me saying this, I know, but I'm tired and hot) I don't really think you're gonna get anywhere.

Had it remained in AF&D I like to think I'd have tried to engage with some thoughtfulness... but now it's in Conversation it's soooo easy to take the piss...

I moved it to conversation so you could take the piss Stoatie.

... I may have to keep a list of people who may potentially deserve banning sometime in the future because Barbelith is totally like losing it right now.

And now we have this, brought to us by Homour My Homo BĂ„mbling Bitch. I've PMed Tom and asked him to initiate the Sensitive Rapist protocols but even if he does I'm not sure he's available to do anything right now.

Doesn't Bambling self-identify as gay? Does that make a difference, or just make it all more confusing?

(He may not- I always thought he did, but am not sure why).

I don't know, but I'm irritated. I'm also aware that my irritation is, in and of itself, not necessarily a reason to do anything in particular.

i dont think the word is in itself unacceptable and i dont think there was ever a policy in place regaridng it's use.
it could be i missed a meeting... care to link to the minutes?

also, could you wait until he gets a chance to give us some context before you initiate 'protocols', dude?

Oh dear. It was a joke* and I really didn't know the stink my username would bring, otherwise I'd have avoided it. As I've vaguely typed in the thread, and as I've told Our Lady thru PM, it's a play on my homosexuality and plumsbitch, that afaik and remember existed until 3 years ago.

* No not really, the sentence was a joke.

And might as well say I only log on roughly 3 times a week, so if I'm suspiciously silent you now know why. 'Twill make for a couple of suspenceladen days, the next few ones will, I say you.

i strongly believe you shouldnt be in any way apologetic for your own choice of self identification.

it's you, and nobody else.

Homour, you're fine by me at the mo. I was irritated, but I really think it was just a confluence of bad events.

Plumsbitch and Gumbitch have set a precedent as far as I can see and the homosexual identifying bit really, really shouldn't be an issue...should it?

I don't know, maybe I don't have the correct antenae, but I really think there might be a small over-reaction on this one.

Tryphena Absent
22:36 / 16.07.06
Depends how much you know about Homour I suppose

Char Aina
22:52 / 16.07.06
...and how much you're willing to assume.

Olulabelle
23:07 / 16.07.06
Anna, I don't agree. This has nothing to do about how much we know about a person. This is a messageboard and we accept what is presented and supposedly judge only on that.

What is presented, currently, should not offend, given our current set of 'rules and regulations.' Whether hir is a secret male goldfish killer or not is of no consequence unless hir decides to discuss it on board.

Tryphena Absent
23:16 / 16.07.06
If 33 had replaced his name with that after the Extinct Clothing thread would you be using the same logic? No because these things pass in context of people's status and behaviour. As you have just pointed out with unless hir decides to discuss it on board. So our irritation and attitude to that irritation always depends on how much we know about a member of the board.

You are actually agreeing with me (and toksik), not disagreeing.

I know this is offtopic and a bit rubbish of me, but here's a table conjugating some gender-neutral pronouns. I'm seeing people want to use them, which is great, and having some confusion about how they work, which is easily fixed.

Olulabelle
23:26 / 16.07.06
I have no confusion, I am merely following the precedent which another poster more au fait with where and how the 'hir'ness was first used may find easier to example for you.

AFAIK 'hir' is used to determine no specific gender. How would you use it?

Char Aina
23:32 / 16.07.06
i think the point was that you used 'hir' where you coulda/shoulda used 'ze'.

in a sentence?
'ze' didnt like 'hir' shelf.

Tom Paine's Bones

i strongly believe you shouldnt be in any way apologetic for your own choice of self identification.

I'd largely agree, but I'd be interested in unpacking that a bit further. Would the same principle apply if a black poster wanted to use n***** in a username? Or if I wanted to use "yid"?

*
23:38 / 16.07.06
It's just that "hir" is an object or possessive pronoun, and you've used it as a subject. "Sie" or "ze" (or "zie" or "xe" or "ve" I suppose; on the boards I've most commonly seen "ze" and "zie" I think) would be the subject pronoun. "Unless ze decides to inform us of hir opinions, we will continue to hold our own beliefs without considering hirs."

Sorry if this is a little too pedantic.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
23:49 / 16.07.06
Pedantic? No... but I do believe someone used "example" as a verb not long ago...
