I thought 'failtroll is fail' meant not that somebody shouldn't be treated as a troll, exactly, but rather that somebody had so overplayed their trollish hand that nobody could bother to get really upset. They don't inspire the same level of annoyance as a proper troll, but I think they can still be treated as trolls if their behavior indicates that their primary purpose is to irritate.

The problem is determining whether the person is conscious of such a purpose and being annoying deliberately, which makes them a troll, or is doing it simply out of habit, by accident, or as a byproduct of a generally irritating style.

Which makes them an ordinary citizen.

"Failtroll is fail" is a version of a meme that originally comes from the asshole of the internet that is 4Chan. 4chan's a discussion and image board that a lot of the memes which eventually sweep the rest of the internet originate from (e.g. lolcats and Demotivator). People on 4chan will post "fail" as an accusation and as a way of dismissing other posts/posters; branding the efforts of the original poster as a failure at whatever they were attempting to accomplish. Another technique often used there is the "___ is ___" meme to comment on another post in a humourous fashion. For instance, if someone posted asking a question about a particular film, and someone else didn't like the film in question, they might post "Boring film is boring."

So, the original "failtroll is fail" can be interpreted as "The post I'm commenting on is an attempt to troll on purpose but it's such a bad/obvious attempt that it's a complete failure as a troll".

Warning: my description of 4chan as "the asshole of the internet" is not an exaggeration. The humour there could charitably be called 'black', but really it's just intended to be as offensive as the posters can manage and ridiculous levels of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc are the norm. My link up there goes to the Wiki page of 4Chan rather than 4Chan itself so is safe to read but, if you feel like seeking out the real deal, don't say I didn't warn you when your brain explodes in horror, especially if you read the /b/ board.

Right - in which case I'm not at all sure that bacon or wtw@w are deliberately trying to troll, although it's possible. I suspect that they simply believe that they are far better at discussion than they actually are,and at least in the case of bacon do not actually know how to communicate in an appropriate fashion at all - hence the random appearances in "Forum Killer", which I think is just following the light. Neither of them have a lot to say, but are very eager that we have a chance to hear it at length. In the absence of any convincing sign of malice, they are either deeply inept trolls or not very good non-troll posters.

We have banned people who have not acted with apparent malice before, but actually not very often - the Fetch, arguably, and Zoemancer, but both of them had become quite upset with people before they were kicked off. Likewise ShadowSax, who was banned not just for horrible opinions but because he was becoming personally abusive in defence of them.

I'm inclined to agree. Judging from my exchange of pms with bacon, there is no clue there about why the contributions have been offensive.

Does anyone think that deletion is insufficient response to bacon's & wth@w's worst offerings so far, since 'ignore' is available as well?

I think they're both a little bit trollish, I think their posts are worded specifically enough to get the gist; that they intend to incite what they perceive as the stodgy uptight crowd here a bit. That's my take, anyway. I don't know that it's worth getting into ban mode about (my previous hyperbole aside), they both seem to be mostly annoying. Bacon rarely responds to anyone when challenged on something said. I thought I vaguely remembered bacon saying a few more things that I thought were suspect or downright fucked, so I searched for a few minutes. Mostly distasteful or abrasive things, often with a hint of implied racism, though it could be inferred:

Then there's whothehell@where?, yes probably worse. I think maybe w@w may have slowed down lately from when they first showed up.This is probably one of their first posts, one of many dogs in this thread, and gems like this thread, which spun off this one...say a lot. I don't know what, exactly, but they are illustrative.
And this post, in the 60 million thread which Haus linked to earlier, & c., really. I'm not sure why I've spent 20 minutes doing this.
I must say, it's easier to search for posts by w@w than bacon.

Oh, yes - he's from FadetoBlack, another board - I think the connection in the olden days was Bitchiekittie and possibly fridgemagnet, but you know how it goes - somebody on board (x) tells their friends how mean board (y) has been to them, those from board (x) go over and have a look, note how gay board (y) is, decide to shake up those gays on board (y) by joining it and having some fun with the gays, and then find that they enjoy the silken kisses of board (y) more than their rough, original home. What was tourism became a refugee situation when FadetoBlack stopped working.
