Anyone who thinks he's definitely a jokesuit needs to spend more time on the rest of the internet. There are PLENTY of people like that out there.

No, I really don't need to spend any more time looking at the rest of the Internet, not if it looks like that, anyway.

I didn’t think jokesuit when I first read his story – and I can well believe Shaftoe that there are plenty of adolescent boys who write that sort of stuff down. But his line of defence when questioned just read so much like a parody of some of the other tantrums we've had in the Creation. All the ‘I know words if i know anything, man.’ stuff, and the ‘I tried weed recently…’ bit raised my suspicions. But then when he turned Real Live Tiger hunter on Toksik, the words “This is a great big wind up” bloomed in the centre of my brain. Like a firecracker.

But perhaps I'm being generous.

I didn't think wind-up when I intially read the story, it's more of a gestalt thing. It just reeks of false, well rehearsed immaturity.

Exactly. All the 'man', 'bro', 'LOL' stuff. It sounds to me like he is mimicking someone he knows, or has read on Barbelith or elsewhere.

What to make of this, then?

A curious post. As a contribution to the thread, it's utterly content-free. But it does function as a signifier to indicate a certain "type"—in fact that is its only conceivable function. It comes off as posturing—establishing his idiot cred, as it were. The capslock (which he's never used elsewhere), the banality and dimness of the sentiment—it seems calculated to me.

I'm leaning towards jokesuit. In fact, I have reason to suspect that the criminal is

If it is a joke-suit isn't that even more reason to effect a ban?

11:40 / 10.01.06
Yes, but we have to agree that it is a jokesuit.

Jack Fear
11:52 / 10.01.06
Well, you know, sometimes a joke is just a joke. And sometimes it's even funny. I mean, the Cabinet Maker suit wasn't exactly a banning offense, was it?

Shrug
11:56 / 10.01.06
Ah, then for the record I did think it was a joke-suit orginally just for, what I presumed to be, its calculated overlooking of key elements in posting etiquette. Not only that of The Barb but also that of the any internet message board (I'm talking about the cross forum posting of topics).
There's also this bizarre and angry response in Alex Thoth's Children of Mars Thread.

I can't understand how a lot of you are getting so up in arms about this when there are posts upon this site in which people are using very, very vulgar language, cursing a blue streak here, using innappropriate language there, and i'm jumped on for a few postings in a few wrong areas.

From the man who gave us two psychopaths and their orgy.
Joke bloody suit.

Well, you know, sometimes a joke is just a joke. And sometimes it's even funny.

Yes and sometimes it's just irritating. The homophobia even if intentioned to be humourous, failed to raise a smile with me.

Jack- to be fair, I got the impression the caps looked more like someone having accidentally had caps lock on (ie the lower-case where there should have been caps) than a deliberate change in style. That's about the only part of what's been said before that I disagree with, though.

I do have to admit, though, I admire the way he effortlessly segues between "no girl would ever want you" and U R TEH GHEY. They should teach that on his course. I'm really quite awestruck.

But I think that’s Jack’s point. It looks a bit like it’s contrived to indicate this is the kind of poster who posts with caps lock on without looking up to notice. A parody, basically. A variation of the ‘teh’ thing. Ditto the 'You are fat and cant get a girlfrend you gay' stuff. I just don't believe it.

Ah. Hadn't looked at it like that. Only just woke up.

Oh, well, in which case I pretty much agree.

And although I'm far from convinced it's Teh Backpacker, didn't he used to bombard us with violent porn fiction too?

I don't know. I very badly want this to be a joke, but I have a horrible feeling that it's not.

Stoatie, although I thought Teh Backpacker too, it would be a significant shift in his style as there isn't really much misogyny and 'why won't girls sex me?' in that piece. It's just very badly written.

As toksik pointed out in the creation thread, the guy is quite easy to find due to him signing off the same way (nearly) all the time and the posting styles seem similar. So a real person or a really well planned joke.

Is this a new ID that's recently joined or someone that registered awhile back?

yeah.

haus and i have at least twice as long on the board, though, so maybe he still feels new. (both of us are from a time when membership was available just by asking, which sorta makes it feel like another age as well)
i know i felt new for a good couple of years at least, and only recently have i started to feel like established 'lith. in all honesty, i often suspect that i have ony achieved that status by being prolific 'lith.

hawksmoor is at least third wave 'lither, and i suspect he may be more like fourth or fifth.

new is in the mind of the noob.

Jack Fear
16:07 / 10.01.06
Mm. But if he's been lurking even a little, he'd have some idea of appropriate places to start threads, that duplicate threads are a no-no, that we don't use sigs, that if you ask for criticism you're going to get criticism...

Hawksmoor is coming on like he just dropped out of the sky—which we know is not the case—and started applying the rules of "the rest of the Internet" to Barbelith.

Which is, I suspect, the point of the suit.

16:15 / 10.01.06
It must have to do with prolificacy or personality. I’ve been here a bit longer than toksik, but I still feel like a bit of a n00b much of the time.

I agree with Jack though, and the fact that he is reasonably consistent on PM doesn’t do much to dissuade me. He's waxed moronic in F,TV&T recently, in a kinda I like to think about things very superficially, no time for yer fancy book-learnin' way. I still don’t rule out you know huw.

ONLY NICE THINGS
16:35 / 10.01.06
Really, does it matter? If you think it's a joke suit, behave accordingly. If it is revealed to be a joke suit, in a reasonably convincing fashion, then we'll probably laugh, nod ruefully at how convincingly we were tricked if we were and then take the keys to the suit away (Jack F: the Cabinet Maker was a long time ago. Since then, having multiple suits registered to a single person on Barbelith and using them as discrete entities is a no-no, which is liable to get at least one of them taken away). I don't see any reason to think it is a joke suit, personally, but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Char Aina
17:16 / 10.01.06
dude.
i wont share the PMs i got, but they are pretty convincing on the side of 'not a joke'. i cant see what comedy value a suit would get from the abuse he was sending me. there's no audience, y'know?
unless he was making sure i didnt slow down my posting by staying in character, i fail to see why he would say the things he did, and end our correspondence in the manner he did.

he may have been joking, but then he jokes like a petulant and self absorbed child too.

Smoothly
17:40 / 10.01.06
I accept that I might be wrong - people like this have to exist in order to be parodied. But I don't take some measure of consistency across different forums, PMs or even the rest of the web as evidence that this isn't a consciously contrived character. For example, I know someone whose comedy alter ego is all over the web, in various forums, communities, blogs, message boards etc, over a period of years. If he came to Barbelith, he would certainly PM in character. Of course he has an audience, Toks; you are the audience.

Char Aina
17:48 / 10.01.06
i suppose.
i was meaning audience in the sense of someone who gets it and is laughing, but then i guess that would be hawksmoor himself.

Axolotl
18:02 / 10.01.06
While I am aware that it is a breach of Barbelith etiquette to discuss P.M.s, I feel that by sending me an abusive P.M full of hate-speech Hawksmoor has forfeited any courtesy due to him. While I admit I should have stayed out of the argument, I still feel that does not justify his response. As an example of sheer wrong-headedness it's almost funny, but Barbelith is supposed to be a safe space, and that kind of language should not be tolerated.
