Rock will die with Lemmy, not before ...

Loathe as I am to resorting to petty musical semantics, I'm going to resort to petty musical semantics by pointing out to Harrison Ford that there are many, many other forms of music than rock and dance.

I'm not going to insult hir intelligence by naming names, but hey. Just wanted to throw that up the flagpole ... see if it bites.

The truth is that rock not only is dead, but has been dead since the mid-seventies. Then it died again in the eighties and once again in the nineties.

Face facts, people- Rock is undead!
Long live Zombie Rock!

Oh yeah? Like what?

World.

And don't try to tell me that World is dead.

The Natural Way
13:15 / 22.11.04
What "World"? I've heard of Country and Western, Rap and Classical, but not World. And, anyway, regardless, a genre's dead when it's no longer relevant. No one even knows what World or Western are anymore, so for all intents and purposes, they must be dead.

"World"!

HA! Snort!

William Sack
13:23 / 22.11.04
"World" makes me snort too - I think it means music that is not British or American. But look in HMV or Tower Records. There's a tiny section called "World" (stuck in the basement or top floor) so it must be a genre.

"World" used to be code for "reggae" until reggae started getting its own section.

The Natural Way

No, no, no "World" doesn't exist.

Welcome, the future is dance....

Hello, MacGyver? You're clearly not a jazz enthusiast then.

I can lend you some of my magazines if you'd like.

Having been convinced that Rock is dead i've got no choice but to sell my prize assetts on ebay if you haven't woken up to the truth you may want to bid...

Also in creating the new me is this a good place to start? I'm a bit confused by the old skool new skool thing - are these records good or shit?

I'll give you an example. I put on The Rapture at a 500 capacity venue & 150 people turned up.

The reason for that would be that the Rapture are ass. A friend of mine's nephew is in the band, so I've had the opportunity to see them a few times. They wouldn't know a decent lyric if it walked up and raped Luke Jenner's vocal chords.

That'd be fun to watch, actually. To be fair, I have to give them props for the creative use of cowbell. But that's about it.

"They wouldn't know a decent lyric if it walked up and raped Luke Jenner's vocal chords."

Yeah 'cos rape's so funny isn't it? No it isn't. At all. EVER!

Can someone at least try & formulate an argument as to why Rock isn't dead, in the "popular" / "fashionable" sense. I mean this was the purpose of the thread.

Stop trolling this thread.

Right, here we go again.
Rock is not dead. It is, perhaps, unfashionable but it is not dead.

It has been a great year for rock, dance, pop and, for all I know, Bulgarian jazz. Music is good at the moment, there are great gigs on all the time. I've seen packed houses for everyone from Sunburned Hand of the Man to the re-formed MC5 to the sodding Datsuns (and next week LIGHTNING BOLT! COME ON!).

People are going to these gigs and coming away excited and inspired before going to a club and dancing their hind legs off to LCD Soundsystem and Mia.

It's not a war. You don't have to choose between the two, and, as far as I can see, people aren't.

"Rock is not dead. It is, perhaps, unfashionable but it is not dead."

In the eyes of popular culture Rock is Dead, this is what is being suggested in this thread.
Yet again we have another, but i love rock it's not dead, look there's some great bands that people really like and bla bla bla bla...

Yeah Yeah, i like Lightning Bolt, they're ace & oh my god shock horror there's quite a few bands around that are making good music that people like. However as apopular movement ROCK IS DEAD.

Dance is back.

Anyway Lightning Bolt sound more like drum 'n' bass with live instruments than rock. They're popular because they've embraced dance music & are taking it to another level.

Dance Music.

C'mon, man, Ozzy can't take a shit without making the front page. Lemmy gets full-page interviews in the broadsheets. Keith fucking Richards is in the next big Johnny Depp blockbuster- AS A PIRATE!!!

Actually... maybe you have a point.

(shuffles awkwardly) Punk's still not dead though, right?

Actually, I've danced to the Tragically Hip before.

Bobossboy: Back away from the can-con. You really don't want millions of mad Canadians beating a path to your door, burning you in effigy now, do you? The Hip are practically national treasures.

Easy feller.
