And what was that thing at the corner of Bush's mouth?

Spittle. God's truth. The man was literally frothing at the mouth.

>> I thought Kerry's comment was perfectly valid -- Cheney's daughter (the mention of her, anyway) is trotted out whenever it's convenient for Bush to try and score points with the very community whose rights he's trying to have constitutionally squashed; the Bush administration made her a political tool, not Kerry's people, and if it's a blade that cuts both ways, so be it.

I have to agree, after thinking about it further -- Cheney trotted her out several months ago after the Constitutional amendment fracas had mostly blown over to show that he can be gay-friendly too, so it's fair game.

The Cheneys complaining about it now is just another sign of desperate attack from an increasingly nervous Bush campaign team, I think.

Yup, the way the neo-cons are dissing John Kerry about the Mary Cheney reference is that it's on a par with mentioning someone is an alcoholic, gambler - i.e something to be ashamed of. Which blatantly illustrates the hompohobic hypocrisy inherent in the Bush administration.

...the fact that the critics are referring to it as an "attack" shows a lot of what they consider to be an insult...

He's absolutely right, of course; it's a lesser rendering of the same thinking which gets us someone like Dostum on the voting card in Afghanistan: "he's not as bad as the guys who sponsor terror". Does it do any good to say it now rather than on Nov 3? Doubtful. Although if the election produces another controversial result, I suppose it is dimly possible something remarkable might happen.

Ni..Mink: Does it do any good? No, I'm not sure that it does. Although I am slightly suprised that the obviously intelligent people who have contributed to this thread are neglecting to mention that the debates are an empty piece of showmanship. If Kerry is elected (and I am sure that regarding US domestic policy that is desirable) I sure hope they don't wake up one morning wondering why it is "business as usual".
In all fairness my argument probably says more about me, as I was so disappointed after the Labour victory in 1997.

(quote) The whole world may well breathe a sigh of relief; the Bush regime is both dangerous and universally loathed; but that is not the point.(/quote)

Actually, it is the point, Mr Pilger. Now, if you want to go ahead and make a different point, go right ahead. The rest of us will concentrate on the US election, which is less of an abstract political point and more actually happening right now.

JtB: you honestly believe that the occupation of Iraq is an abstract political point and not happening right now?

I think the point (as I see it at least) a new president may be that much more likely to listen to a population that is opposed to the ocupation in Iraq than would an Chimp who can decieve himself into believing that he's been re-elected.

A second term would allow "them" the freedom to do as they please with NO input from the population. As well as send the message tot eh rest of the world that BUSH's actions are approved the U.S. as a whole.

Along with this being an election, it's a sort of referendum on the U.S.A's Emperial designs.

In summation, it seems that the media pronounced Kerry the victor of at least the first debate by a huge margin, gave Kerry the slight edge on the final and pronounced the second a tie. Or maybe pronounced the second and third ties if they're really dumb.
