The cover to New X Men 149 ...

As the solicitation dictates, this is the penultimate chapter to Grant's second to final storyarc on the title, Planet X. Thus far, I'm wondering who the beautiful colorist for that cover was, and if they'll in turn be providing the colors on the books interior pages... thoughts, anyone?

Xorn looks pretty scary, doesn't he? I still can't quite reconcile the narrator of issue 127 with the mystery villain who's pulling Esme's strings... But I do think that Xorn would be very easy to push over the edge.

Who drew it? Sienkiewicz? It's fucking fantastic.

Those're scary long arms, eh? Shit. Is Xorn on the line between a rocket launcher and a windmill?

"The man with the darkest secret of them all", remember.

Oh my, I like this cover a lot. It's certainly not Sienkiewicz. At a push I'd guess Phil Hale, but it looks more like someone imitating Phil Hale.

First NXM cover I've liked in a while.

Sez on the website that it's Jiminez. Never seen him paint before, but if he can do that sequentially, well...

I'd really, really like to see it.

hmmm...he looks a bit evil. Perhaps Phoenix vs. Zorn in the battle of the century?

Damn, if they got Phil Hale to do comic book covers.....then all they'd need to do is get Michael Lau to do a set of New X-Men figures and I could throw my brain away.

Hey, remember Beak? He was awesome. Man, a Michael Lau Beak figure. Meditate everyone. We need to make this happen.

Er...Phil Hale HAS done comic covers...Swamp Thing, Flinch, Weird War Tales...

It's a Jimenez pic. It's just been colored rather wonderfully, hence my initial question... No Phil Hale....

Xorn kicks Anal Monkey Pirate ass!!

It just doesn't look like Jiminez at all, even without the colouring - the composition, the proportions of the figure, the pose, the hands, detailing of the costume, the industrial background detail - none of it is the usual Jiminez stuff. Either he's gone through a dramatic shift in style (unlikely) or the website solicitation has incorrectly credited Jiminez (far more likely).

I'll be surprised and pleased if it actually *is* Phil J.

I agree - it doesn't look very Jimenez-like. Especially the way the hands are posed and placed. Well, soon we'll find out who the artist is for sure, I would imagine.

Could it be Ashley Wood? It's a cut above his usual stuff as far as I'm concerned, but that's who the hands remind me of...

Ashley Wood sounds oddly plausible, Flyboy, though you’re right to say that if it is him then it’s a big improvement over his normal output. I’ve always wanted Wood to improve as an artist, as there’s something in his work that really appeals to me, but there’s always been a certain lack of chops on show (in terms of both rendering and—more importantly—storytelling) that stops me from really enjoying his art, even though I want to.

In an odd way, I’d really like this to be a Jimenez piece… for whatever reason, I’d like to think he has the range to do something like this.

I love this cover, in case you hadn’t guessed. It’s striking and moody and makes me very excited to see what Xorn’s role in all of this is going to be and… basically, it gets me excited about the issue/story arc in question, which is a sure sign that it’s doing its job well, right?

Oh, I agree. That's just what it says.

Ashley Wood sounds like a distinct possibility. Who else typically does painted covers? 'S obviously not Alex Ross or Bradstreet. Brian Wood? McKean - nah, too simple.

Looks VERY like a guy who works for 2000ad, forget the name but he's on Slaine at the moment, did Dinosty back in the 90s with Pat "dull pagan bullshit" Mills.

Awesome fucking cover, it's on my desktop right now.

There's something about the arms and the little pot belly that makes me think of Kent Williams.

I agree w/Cameron. Judging by the hands, I'd lay money on Hale. Maybe.

Tertiary OvRePost of this thread.

The Savage Land is in the big empty-seeming space of the upside-down Mercator map Mags keeps standing in front of. I'm a bit of a Jonny-cum-lately on GM's X-Men run. Had that projection previously been a constant image in Xorn's Special Classroom? Is it pointless speculation to look South in this next chapter?

Oh for fucks sake, why lock the new thread? There's fuck all to justify digging this one up. It's just pedantic.

I've never been entirely clear on why starting new threads on previously discussed topics is such a faux pas here, particularly when the old threads are buried weeks or months down.

I HATE YOU FLUX! I FUCKING HATE YOU! Aaaarrrrggh!
I know it was you that locked the other thread! I'm attaching a combination lock to my chain as I speak! I'm gonna make you swallow the whole thing! You're gonna have a lock comming out your ass and a chain hanging from your lip! And I'm going to attach the two so you're stuck in a constant chain-swallowing/shitting loop! Be prepared!

It's to make it easy to do searches, and so that all discussion is localised in one place. It doesn't take longer than thirty seconds to do a search to find any previous topics on a subject, which is especially easy when it comes to X-Men threads. If you feel you've made any worthwhile contributions to the other thread then copy them into a new post for this one.

End threadrot, please?

The Beak in Xorn mask was a scary thought from that other thread...

Apologies to flux, I was in a well pissy mood when I posted that. The point stands, I could have made it better.

It's the arms- looks totally like Beak's arms, and the tilt of his head....

hmmm....

The second thread was locked because this thread already existed for the issue. There is no reason to have multiple threads for the same issue, it only makes things more confusing. It doesn't take too much effort to look around to check to see if there is already a thread for any given issue, so there's no real excuse for starting duplicate single-issue threads.

It's nothing personal against the person who started it. It's just an attempt to keep things tidy and clean.

I like the Beak-as-Xorn idea, but somehow I get the feeling that the artist of that cover was just taking liberties.

The sum total of the other thread was:

Out Nov. 19.

Magneto likes Mercator maps - Why's Magneto hatin' on Peters Projection maps?

Xorn = Karmic Backlash + Chains.

CBR Forum says Xorn looks like Beak on the cover.

And now we become One.

As for Mags' map choice, I wasn't even proposing the Peter's as alternative. As fine a job as it does to show up the inadequacies of the Merc, even the proportional to actual land mass Peter's is too... bent for me. I'm just interested in further evidence of Erik's mistrued perceptions. Such as latching on to an outdated world-perception. Credit for the [%]revolutionary[%] touch of turning it upside down!!!

Oo. Beak as a Xornito. Ah'm xcited.
