Note: This topic started as a critique of an existing working (the Transducer). The natural direction of the operation has meant a change of focus: the project is now an examination of Barbelith and its properties in order to create a caring and non-coersive basis for changework.

Advance warning: this is going to be an extremely long post. Any of you with short attention spans can go back to obsessing over the Cartoon Network (I'm just bitter cos I don't have digital TV any more). It's a continuation of a this thread (Happy B-Day Peace Mango!), but I've summarised the main points that were discussed below, along with a brief description of the original working. So, in true project planner stylee, this is my proposal. Feel free to disagree with any of what I have to say.

This will probably recap a lot of old ground for those who are already well familiar with the makeup for the Transducer. I encourage everyone to keep going, as the two options laid out in my proposal for future workings should be of considerable interest to everyone on this site, particularly the latter (in fact, it may even be worth inviting in regulars from outside the Magick forum to comment).

BARBELITH, THE TRANSDUCER AND GLOBAL WORKINGS

Aims

A magickal working to effect peaceful and compassionate change in conflict situations on a local or global scale.

Method

- The construction of the Transducer (also known as Peace Mango), a servitor designed to promote peace by converting negative energy into positive energy.

- The servitor was constructed and charged as a group sigil working.

- Communication with and maintenance of the servitor can be established by rituals involving mangoes or mango derived products.

- Interaction can also result from working with the song, Peace Mango.

- The Transducer also has the capacity to feed itself on the conflict situations it is deployed into, growing and learning as it transforms energies and effects change.

Risks

- The Transducer processes energies on the assumption that its input is in binary opposition to its output. The implications of this is that the core of the servitor's programming may be based on a model which is unsuitable to the complexities of the global geopolitical context into which it must operate (in which energies are arguably never strictly polarised).

- The aims and success of mission parameters for the servitor can only be assessed on subjective, relativistic terms. This not only calls into question the limited perspective of those performing the working, but also implies that no robust data can be produced to evaluate effectiveness.

- It is extremely difficult to quantify the success of such a working, as changes in global trends can be attributed to a large number of factors. The servitor must therefore be rigorously tested in a localised environment to minimise the risk of the experiment becoming contaminated with said factors. Although it is highly reasonable to suggest that these forces will be entirely synchronous and favourable to the working, it is still advisable to explore the impact of this phenomenon on as restricted a basis as possible so that success can be evaluated.

- It is virtually impossible to predict the complex and chaotic variables that may be involved in any conflict situation, whether local or global. Well intentioned workings in a particular area may effect the overall balance in unexpected ways.

- News sources that will be necessary to monitor any workings have often proven unreliable at best. This can be especially true in times of conflict, in which the State exerts tighter controls on the freedom of media in general.

- The Transducer's mission involves the eradication of its primary food source. There is therefore concern that it may cultivate the conditions which it is designed to alleviate in order to nourish itself. This risk is minimised by its ability to remain dormant for long periods when not required.

- The capacity for the any critical assessment of such a working has been called into question. It is noted that the Transducer, and magick in general, are seen by some as an irrational solution to an irrational problem. This feeling is, however, subject to some debate.

Results and Evaluation

- The Transducer has now been in operation for over a year, without any critical examination of its success. It has been deployed into a number of situations in a manner which has not been fully conducive to assessing its results. The perceived success and failure of these instances is based on abstract reportage and subjective opinion (as detailed in Risks, above).

- It is also noted that the Transducer has been used in a number of markedly different scenarios, by people with differing agendas. The intangible nature of its aims may assist its flexibility in smaller personal contexts which are easier to manage.

- Assessment is hampered by protecting the privacy of those who have performed Transducer workings.

- The Transducer was delivered into a highly charged political climate, post 911. This may be an overwhelming scenario for a working in the earlier stages of its development. Whatever the cause, its effects on the global geopolitical situation cannot be determined in any concrete sense.

Conclusions and Recommendations

- The Transducer/Peace Mango is clearly perceived as successful on a personal basis, in which conflicting aims and perceptions of results are only as much of an issue as the sorcerer allows. It is not within the remit of this document to question the anecdotal evidence of an individual's practise. It is therefore recommended that the Transducer be maintained for as long as it is required by those who find it useful, subject to review by those parties.

- The nature of the working itself is seriously called into question when it is deployed for anything more complex than an individual's personal requirements. Although it is still largely untested in this area (in any *scientific* sense), an appraisal of existing material on the Transducer shows that there are too many potentially dangerous flaws to allow such a test to take place without a radical rethink of its programming and purpose. Such tests must wait until all parties are satisfied that there is no possible risk of exacerbating an already explosive international situation.

- It is therefore recommended that a projects team be assembled from regular Barbelith contributors. These people must have the necessary time and personal resources to commit to such a project. It is also recommended that these individuals be from a wider spectrum than those who solely contribute to the Magick forum: there must also be representatives from the Headshop (to assess possible flaws in the ethics and core philosophy of the project) and Switchboard (to set aims and track the success of workings across a broad spectrum of news sources). The team should set up a private forum in which to work (for efficiency and maintaining focus), regularly communicating with the larger community in an accountable and transparent manner (at least one site Administrator should be involved in the oversight of the project for this reason).

- It is advisable that the ongoing project be approached in one of two ways:

Option One: The Transducer Circuit

- The Transducer could be seen as one element within a larger circuit. This allows greater flexibility for tailoring workings to suit the needs of specific requirements, as elements in the circuit can be removed and refined as required, analogous to a computer operating system with plug-ins designed to improve performance in specific areas.

- A list of possible components for inclusion in the circuit could be; an Amplifier servitor to increase the potency of workings (already in existence as the Spiral Amplifly); an Educator servitor to spread unbiased and accurate information; an Activist servitor to inspire the viral spread of peacenik ideals by a number of non-violent means; and an Evaluator servitor capable of performing needs analyses on global situations, while also acting as a control element so that the entire circuit is capable of working on its own.

- Special attention must be paid to overcoming or minimising the risks already detailed.

Option Two: Barbelith

- It is to be noted that Barbelith itself is a pre-existing magickal blueprint for effecting personal and global change. The Barbelith servitor as described in The Invisibles is founded on the principles of agape, education and transformation, releasing ideas and assisting in initiation, individuation and self-transformation. It is geared towards global change by acting on the mindset of every individual at once. Its existence is act as a placenta, providing the developing human race with everything it needs in order to grow into its full potential.

- Barbelith is a crystallisation and perfection of the intentions of the original Transducer, and is capable of functioning without the same risk margin. It is flexible enough to critique concepts of freedom and utopia without compromising its transformative powers.

- Furthermore, the Barbelith servitor itself already exists in the *real* world (i.e.: off the conceptual drawing board) as part of a powerful working: The Invisibles hypersigil. Barbelith (the community) is arguably evidence of its existence, and so our role becomes more one of maintenance and deploying it to act in specific circumstances. The energy devoted to this working is already present on a large enough scale to perform powerful magick, the ideals of which are very much in common with those of the Transducer. The usage of Barbelith itself will help to unite the board itself behind its deployment.

- Workings using Barbelith itself as the servitor also further the aims of this community as a centre of change. It has been commented that we do not engage in enough practical work, not least by Grant Morrison himself (who, of course, should be consulted before any workings take place).

- Focusing our changework through Barbelith as opposed to the Transducer does not necessarily exclude the ongoing use of the latter. It has already been established that the Transducer is successful for those who find it useful, and there is no reason to end its existence purely to work with Barbelith on a larger scale than previously attempted.

- Barbelith already comes with a working deadline almost exactly a decade from now

So, those are my ideas (with a recap of everyone's input, as far possible), and the reasoning behind them. I'll field any questions, but as usual this is a group thing. What do you guys think? And is there any way we can get Morrison to read this, as well as the rest of the board?

okay... I was gonna PM this to exp, but maybe I should just say it out loud.

I have felt Barbelith.

Reading the words above gave me such a rush, it urged me to drop the Hoor-Paar-Kraat and 'fess up. Yeah. It spoke to me. I didn't approach it, quite the opposite. It was such a McGowan moment that I was tempted to write it off. But it happened again. Several times in total.

Letting me know.

Synchronicity and confirmation. whatever. I'll shut up with my off-topic testimonials and consider whether to hit Post Reply...

Idden "Barbelith" more like an egregore? A completed circuit of which something like the Transducer might be a single component?

I'm an admin and willing to oversee anything.

You did mean converting negative into positive energy, didn't you? – Hunterwolf

Ahh...nothing like a Freudian Slip to make our day, eh? I wonder about that myself in regards to the Transducer.

exp's abstract is very interesting; in regards of "using Barbelith itself for international and personal changework", well that's a bit non-consensual, isn't it? Barbelith is a bulletin board that various and sundry people post to (1540 as I look up to the masthead there), very few (if any) who will be interested in the energy they put into the board being used for the "personal changework" of another poster that they don't know and may not like, or whose utilization of the energy they may not approve of.

As for workings on an international level...That may get more consensus – or at least more lip service – from a larger amount of posters, but I think the non-consensuality of a few people (The Magick Forum) deciding what to do with energy generated by many people (Barbelith in general) is at best a bit rude, and at worst rather manipulative.

Babdh Catha: Wrong end of the stick, pal. I'm referring to the Barbelith in orbit somewhere behind the moon (as detailed in the Invisibles), not this message board (which has just happened to borrow its name).

Apologies: the original post may have assumed knowledge that not all readers would have. However, it still makes it pretty clear that I wasn't referring to the message board itself - in fact, one sentence of my post deliberately distinguishes a difference between the two, even if you have no prior knowledge of the Invisibles.

To be honest though, I'm amazed that you jumped to the conclusion that we were going to use the energies of posters without their consent as part of our working. That idea is not present in any area of the original post. If you're not clear on anything else, just ask.

HunterWolf: What a mistake-ah to make-ah! I've logged a moderator request to change that line of the original post.

grant: You're probably right about Barbelith being more of an egregore. I'm no expert on terminology, which is where you lot come in.

Babdh Catha: It may help to look at it like this. Working with the Barbelith egregore is pretty much the same as a sorceror choosing to work with Ganesh. They don't have to consult any Hindus to gain permission to ask him to do what he does naturally, and they certainly aren't unfairly using the worship of those Hindus without permission to further their own working. Not the greatest analogy, as members of this site don't worship Barbelith, but you get what I mean.

If there is any vaguely non-consensual element to the ideas in this thread, it concerns performing workings which are designed to change people in the world and their attitudes. Barbelith is actually uniquely well designed to do this, as it works with the belief system of the person it interacts with (remember how it appeared as Christ to Dane, deliberately choosing a form that he would understand). All it does is extrapolate the core ideas of anyone's existing philosophy, while drawing attention to destructive contradictions. It increases one's options, but does not take away one's ability to choose.

Currently investigating ways to get GM on board.

expressionless: Thank you kindly for your clarifications, they are helpful and I can now see the differences you discern between this bulletin board and the symbol used in The Invisibles.

As for jumping to conclusions - I did not/do not think that you or other knowledgeable members of this forum would willfully or consciously utilize other people's energies in such a manner. I did think it was an issue to be brought up and discussed, partly because I wasn't sure if you were referring to the board itself or not. You've cleared that up wonderfully, thanks again.

All I know is, ever since the Peace Mango came on the scene, I started drinking this great Orange/Mango juice that Mistic makes (and drinking a LOT of it), and I listened to that terrific song that Naked Flame made so many hundreds of times that I can play it back in my head at all, and I do play it in my head and sing it many many times a week. That's got to be charging it and keeping the connection flowing somehow.

And do we have any volunteers (besides the lovely grant) for making this work?

Something just clicked for me, reading this thread. Since this weekend, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon has been running about my head constantly. It has to do with grokking how the finale is a great whopping banishing, making the lot a magickal working in whole as an album. But anyway, the click: Barbelith is in orbit on the dark side of the moon.

Following this a bit, the album deals largely with the unavoidable doom of death, and its inevetible triumph over life (cheery, eh?). "Everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon". Light, for all its glory, is defeated at this time. But death is change, especially as the eclipse is always temporary. Barbelith is a force of change, and awakening. So, the link there can be seen, and how appropriate it is to be orbiting where it is.

Anyway, probably not terribly newsworthy, but I thought it was neat.

I feel Peace Mango needs an arch-Nemesis, ,like....WAR MANGO!
I mean, in quantum mechanics you need a positron to balance an electron, and an anti-neutrino to balance a neutrino. Opposing fruit on the quest for world peace.

"Really, there is no darkside of the moon. In fact, it's all dark."

cusm: Read your post. It immediately brought the above to mind. I am still shaking and my brain doesn't know why.

exp: Great ideas you have for global workings - using the Barbelith servitor, the Transducer with component servitors and the pulling of the natural talent, supernatural talent and general knowledge from the different fora.

If something needs to be done regarding TRansducer, this is a good place to do it. If Transducer's fuel supply actually threatens it's very mission, (as Badbh Catha pointed out in another thread) then what should be done? Should Transducer be dissolved or reprogrammed?

The Barbelith servitor seems to be a potent and efficacious vehicle/entity/thoughtform for producing global change, even though I personally have not been introduced nor have I read Invisibles yet, (soon, when I am ready :eek ), this is the impression I get. But how exactly is this accessed? I am not sure on that one. You know, it makes me wonder why this servitor was not mentioned post-haste, post 9/11, maybe that is an access issue.

Anyway, I love to see people (expecially those who work on themselves) working on solutions. This place is filled with too much brilliance, and it is amazing when it is used for evolving and developing, individually and globally (I believe, one begets the other).

Maybe I shouldnt post this here but... I used 3 servitors that did that exact thing but on smaller scale. Basically to transfor the negative energy sent to me by others or that I found in the street or wherever I went into positive energy. More like a shield. After they ran their course I reabsorbed them. Only the third one, I have forgotten his name, had a decisive impact on my life, when I ate him I was destroying all my stuff because I was going to comit suicide, but with the added energy from him (that was mine to begin with) I didnt do it. What I'm trying to say is maybe the transducer would work better as a hive of self-replicating servitors, something like IMP. Something that works one-on-one with people. I think I'm not making any sense right now. Going to bed.

May: I don't think the Transducer should be unmade just yet. There are several posters who have have found the Mango really useful. Maybe the people who use it regularly should just get together and discuss how to proceed.

I'm surprised that the idea of working with Barbelith hasn't come up before (maybe it has, before my time on the site). You're right in saying that we could do with ideas for working with it, but something also tells me that it would go out of its way to meet us where we are. That's one of the major things we'll be discussing as soon as a few more people volunteer to be part of the offboard discussion/working. We'll then keep the rest of you informed about the way we're proceeding, when large-scale workings are happening, etc.

Hmm. Mangos grow on trees, do they not? Mangos have seeds. If you plant the transducer, perhaps it will sprout a tree (Yggdrazil?) that drops new tranducing servitor mangos like fruit. Would make for an interesting working, to unleash them onto the world as an organic force of transmutation of negativity into peace. As well, if they're programmed to replicate, they would naturally rot away when no longer needed, thus controlling its growth.

Interesting points.

I feel a bit foolish about not noticing the fact that the Mango's mission 'involves eradicating its food supply' (or however exp put it). That does make one wonder...

I think there's a lot to be said for refining the Transducer. I've found it useful, but a little tinkering could always improve things. And to be honest, I just like the idea of having an Activist servitor - what would that look like?

Given that Bleeeurgh and Shrub seem pretty much ready to unleash Hell in the Gulf in the new year, though, one wonders at the effectiveness of the Mango. Is the best we could accomplish merely the postponing of war for a year? Maybe not even that...Whatever, I still intend to charge the Mango again 2moro with a visit to my favourite synchronicitously-named eatery (Mango's Chinese Restaurant, Newcastle - which I only came across after the Transducer ritual) and see if it does anything this time...

As regards the use of Barbelith, I seem to recall that some anti-war protesters last year used a banner with both the Mango symbol and the Barbelith symbol on it. Naturally they never got on telly with it because, you know, they were Evil Crusty Pacifists. This is why I sometimes think we should infiltrate the Countryside Alliance - we'd get more cameras pointed at us then...

Here's a question for the Transducer fans: if there is a war with Iraq in the new year, as seems increasingly likely, what do we do then? Persist with the Mango, refine it, work with Barbelith, or try some new strategy?

Maybe the war cuold be used for our own purposes. Just think about it. Maybe this war doesn't need to be stopped. Just imagine the sheer amount of negative energy. Hell, we could launch an army of mangos not just one tree. Maybe even transform the transducer into an egregore. Or use that energy for other reasons. It would be like surfing in a tsunami, wouldn't it?

On a side note why not use both symbols (Barbelith and Mango) in totally unrelated events? That's more chaotic and likely to get attention. In sports events, maybe buy a spectacular ad (if thas their name, I mean the big ads that fill the cities) on one in a magazine. To unleash the sigils on an unsuspecting people. In contest shows, in any live action program. Anywhere except anti-war riots(j/k ;-))

Maybe what needs to be defined is the proper targets for Mango. Perhaps the nature of the Transducer is only suited to certain types of missions. What would those be? I am guessing but I think ongoing hostile situations, where the lines have been transgressed so many times by all sides, the mission is not very clear (such is the case in the middle east, India/Pakistan, America/...and just about anyone)- unless we can devise a detailing system or hook Mango up to the Nornir....or maybe even Barbelith.

So,how would we use Mango if there is a war with Iraq in the new year, as Velvet mentioned? What intelligence would decide the checks and balances of negative and positive? Can this be reprogrammed into Transducer or would ze work best if helped by a big-brother-type servitor (as in sibling, not 1984)?

Another suggestion: Reprogram Transducer so ze can remain in stasis for long periods with no need for fuel.

Flame: That's a pretty odd post, and there's a great many points made in the thread which it doesn't address - certainly not in any adequate way, at least. If I interpret it correctly, it means you're against closing down the Transducer, and there's certainly been no serious call for that yet: just a reassessment of what's it's suited to do, or a refinement of its programming.

Two things:
1) velvetvandal: "Mango's mission 'involves eradicating its food supply' (or however exp put it). That does make one wonder..."
2)Moh: "Maybe the war cuold be used for our own purposes."
It seems to me that using the P-Mango, and especially upgrading it into a hive or whatever could be counterproductive. All living things require the presence of their food source (that is, negative energy) in order to survive, the only way to keep the servitor going would be to 'feed' it, maybe even to create a whole aetheric eco-system with the hope of positive vibes being a waste product.
Barbelith (the satellite)seems more the way to go; instead of basing the design on a living thing, a mango tree, why not have Barb' bombard the whole planet with positivity from it's safe spot behind the moon?

Putting in a bit of an odd link for this thread.

This is a brief summary of events in the 'states by Will Hutton, The Observer's economic correspondent. I'm sticking it here, because I'm on a bit of quest for optimism at the moment, and the whole Barbelith servitor type thing seems to feed into that. This piece is reporting on the potential inherent in negative times, so it kinda fits, as it outlines trends I'd like to see manifest. Any thoughts?

Sorry for taking so long to give an update on the progress of these ideas. So far seven people have expressed varying degrees of interest in using Barbelith to effect changework. I'd like that number to increase, and this post is one of several I'm undertaking to ensure that more people can become interested in how this works.

The following will be another long post. Please take the time to make sure you fully understand it. There's room for any number of questions, and I'd like to actively encourage a critique of what I'm proposing. Part of the reason for the way in which I'm approaching communication with the board is to encourage people who aren't currently involved with magic to take an interest. Because of this, I want to ensure everyone is comfortable with the working before contributing.

USING BARBELITH IN CHANGEWORK

What is Barbelith?

Barbelith is an egregore founded on the principles of agape, education and transformation, capable of releasing ideas and assisting in initiation, individuation and self-development. It acts as a placenta, providing the developing human race with the nourishment necessary in order to grow into its full potential. This global working is accomplished by its capacity to engage with an unlimited number of people simultaneously.

Barbelith was originally part of The Invisibles, a comic series by Grant Morrison. This work was has been called a narrative hypersigil: in other words, a magical working intended to bring about changes in its author and readership. A large body of anecdotal evidence exists to suggest that the intentions of the working were successful, although these effects are not easily quantifiable (they rely on the subjective experience of those involved). As the methodology of the working involved the way in which our personal realities and world models depend on fiction for their existence and maintenance, it's reasonable to suggest that the egregore has received sufficient empowerment to be used in workings which are independent from (albeit ideologically linked to) the original text. Furthermore, there are already accounts of Barbelith interacting with a number of individuals connected to this site.

The egregore is capable of working in synergy with the existing world model of those it interacts with, ensuring that progress is not carried out against the flow of belief. It educates and transforms the individual using the principles of agape, never constricting the freedom of the individual to choose. Rather, it presents alternate options and encourages the subject to develop their understanding of the world until inconsistencies are tackled and disregarded where necessary. It never coerces, never dominates, never imposes one person's will on another.

There are numerous precedents for Barbelith. It has been remarked that it is similar to Valis (from a P K Dick novel that I have not read). In The Invisibles it assumed the form of initiatory archetypes - well documented by scholars of of comparative religion - which were expanded upon to include accounts alien abduction (as they conform in many ways to the components of classic initiation accounts). It has been compared to Christ, largely due to its mission to sacrifice itself to save the subject. It is easy to extrapolate further to suggest connections with the Lapis or Philosophers Stone, a mystic transformative substance used by alchemists (many of whom believed there was a deeper psychological strata to their methods), which in turn suggests that Barbelith can be seen as a crystalisation of Jung's theories of the Individuation Process. None of these comparisons are intended to be complete: they are merely examples of ways in which the ideology behind the egregore is already widely disseminated. Barbelith uses the wealth of this material in fulfilling its goal. It is not restricted to any one ontology.

Why work with Barbelith, not the Transducer?

The principle theoretical flaws of the Transducer have been described in detail earlier in this thread. Using Barbelith as a substitute carries a number of the same risks, with the exception that it does not involve the transformation of *negative energy* into *positive energy.* These terms are highly subjective, relying on the belief system of the practioner as opposed to any pre-existing values. Barbelith overcomes this by operating from agape. It is self-sacrificial, and encourages the practioner to change us much as the subject. It is reasonable to assume that workings which run against this core principle will not work, minimising the risk of damage.

Barbelith also operates with the intention of developing and evolving humanity into the form best suited to fully realise its future potential. While such a broad perspective is reassuring (particularly considering its founing on the principles of self-sacrificial love), it is a matter of some debate as to what this form might be. Possible answers to this may be understood from speculative fiction, which could be seen to be the most adapted form of modern scripture, seeking to provide a symbolic illustration of the further development of mankind (examples may include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Akira, The Invisibles, Neon Genesis Evangelion).

The remaining risks are still valid. However, Barbelith has not been tested in any situation which does not directly involve those who have experienced The Invisibles. It is therefore recommended that localised testing is carried out in order to minimise the risks in a larger scenario.

Strategies for Testing Barbelith

- Barbelith workings should effect the practitioners as much as the subject. It is therefore recommended that the first test should be carried out purely with the intention of working on oneself. Anecdotal evidence should be supplied to this thread, protecting privacy where necessary. This could consist of accounts in other states of consciousness (trance, meditation, dreams, journeywork, etc); synchronous events (meeting people, overhearing conversations, experiences of art, music, literature, etc); changes of ones mindset (providing a better perspective on difficult situations, development of problematic world models). The practioner should be observant of any unusual activity which be used as anecdotal evidence, no matter how unexpected. Honesty should be a key factor, including situations in which one feels as though no contact has been established.

For example: I'm sitting in my local pub while I'm typing this. I've been drifting between writing and eavesdropping on the conversations around me. These have touched on dream interpretation, past life experiences, the therapy industry, ghost encounters, the current American government's corrupt actions in coming to power, No Logo, chaos theory, global geo-politics, the Mayan Calendar (coupled with the feeling that history is building to a climax), Rage Against the Machine lyrics. This is not an exhaustive list, and it is culled from conversations being held between only two groups of people (with whom I have no prior relationship). It's interesting that such disparate Invisibles-related phenomena are discussed in such close geopgrahical and temporal proximity while I'm working on a report to encourage people to use Barbelith to effect change in the world. A synchronous occurence, not conclusive, but worth including as an example of the anecdotal evidence I'm looking for.

Of course, this methodology is subject to the same risks as any magical working. As with all experiments of this nature, results may be explicable by other means. It is not within the mandate of this proposal to consider the complex questions of the reality of magic. Start another thread if you want to re-open that can of worms!

- Barbelith workings should then be tested in a small scale, localised environment, depending on the success of the initial personal experiment. This could be an issue of local government, or a minor news story. It is therefore recommended that specialists from the relevant area (likely to be the Switchboard forum) are consulted in order to track the progress of any given news story over a number of sources. This will be the major test to see whether the risks of using Barbelith as a platform for global change are outweighed by the potential benefits, and will also establish the feasibility of the performing changework in situations that have no true connection to the original Invisibles casting. It is recommended that more than one test be carried out, and that a modified methodology is employed. These should be decided depending on the outcome of the personal working.

- Should the second localised experiment be successful, Barbelith should then be employed in a similar manner in progressively larger scenarios, each time taking account of the potential risks. Methodology may also require revision as the scenarios become more complex.

Methodologies

This section is restricted to discussing methodologies used when working with Barbelith in a personal context. Other techniques should be decided upon dependingon the situation and the outcome of these initial experiments.

Barbelith should be able to accomodate the working methods of any existing practioner (assuming it conforms to the pattern detailed in the Invisibles). The initial experiment will entail personal change only, so it is recommended that each practioner uses the methods with which they feel comfortable. It is hoped that Barbelith will be capable of interacting with any individual regardless of their background or level of development - in any case, the ontological flexibility of the egregore will be one of the main factors measured by the initial workings.

Barbelith already has an established inconography should one be using a visual method to establish contact. Its form in the Invisibles was a simple mandala, extrapolated to three dimensions, a central circular point surrounded by a larger circle. In many cases this appeared as an object with three dimensions, often appearing with lines across its circumference. It is depicted as pinkish in colour, but at other times has appeared as a bright red or green sphere or circle with no central point. It is worth noting that its form is often identical with near universal symbols of the self, or of a supreme being. It is my belief that the circle within a circle depicts one of the simplest and most pervasive maps of reality, although a detailed discussion of this should be left to another thread. It is down to the practioner's discretion concerning the use of these symbols, as many who construct sigils prefer that the design bears no obvious resemblance to the intention.

It is also hoped that board members who do not regularly (or deliberately!) practise magic will express an interest in participating. The following methods are only a few ways you may want to try. It is hoped that such a direct involvement with message board will enable with a higher "charge" than if one were coming to the experiment blind. There's also an argument for suggesting that one's involvement with the Barbelith community is an indication that this working has already been commenced in some manner, so that all you'll need to do is apply a conscious harness.

- Dream incubation: As you relax to go to sleep, form a relaxed intention to have a dream which relates to Barbelith. Each time your attention wanders, bring it gently back to your intention. Do not concentrate too hard: it'll prevent you from getting to sleep! Immediately upon waking record everything you can recall in a journal, even if it doesn't seem to relate to Barbelith at all. A few tips for journalling; record everything in precise detail (sights, sounds, smells, emotions, unusual phenomena or inconsistencies, people, places, destinations, tacit knowledge, associations); write in the present tense, staying as true to the sequence of events depicted as possible (without exerting any conscious control of the order if possible); write honestly, and keep the journal secret if the accounts are too personal to share; if a full account is not possible immediately upon waking, try to at least write some notes (sufficient to aid in recall at a later time). If you have no recall, write down the feelings you had when you woke up, as to begin with it is better to maintain a routine of journalling even if recall doesn't come straight away. The simple act of deciding to record dreams is often enough to provoke increased recall in many cases, and establishing a routine will help considerably.

- Creating a sigil (a graphic coded intention, which is then charged and forgotten). The intention could be, "I will have a powerful experience of the Barbelith egregore within the next three days." Write this setence down, then remove all vowels and repeating letters. Arrange the leftover consonants in a design or symbol. This can be as simple as a line drawing in biro. The sigil must then be charged, usually by visualising it at the point of orgasm (although there are many other methods to acheive the necessary state). Think about something else as soon as the sigil is charged, and if you find your thoughts wandering back to the working ensure that you have something else with which to occupy yourself. Record any experiences that relate to the intention.

- Repeat this paragraph (or one of your own) at least three times a day, gently exterting your will:

"I will establish contact with Barbelith on a greater level. It's happening right now. It's capable of contacting me at any time, in any manner. I ask that my internal resources become mobilised for the purpose of noticing when contact occurs. I ask for the co-operation of my senses, my consciousness, and the resources that I'm not yet aware of. When contact is established a part of me will be changed for the better."

These methodologies are not intended to be exhaustive, and I'd welcome any other simple techniques to help non-regular practioners to get involved. The fact that I don't use sigils is probably obvious from the text, so please feel free to correct any mistakes I've made with that section.

Deadlines for the First Phase

I'm allocating an entire month to this first working, ending 14.02.2003. Please given as many reports as you can, whether you establish some form of contact or not. If you'd prefer not to post your results on the board then you can e-mail or PM them to me (if you think I'm any more trustworthy!).

I've also taken the liberty of putting together a PM mailshot to the other moderators, whether Magick forum related or. I'd particularly like involvement from those who are related to either the Headshop or Switchboard.

Finally, I'm also going to send Grant Morrison a second e-mail. Not that he'll respond, the haughty bitch

Thanks, exp! Great ideas, great layout of methodologies! I'm implementing them as we speak -- and I've already experienced a great deal of synchronicity as a result of re-reading THE INVISIBLES from start to finish, as related over in the Invis. Virgin thread. I see this Barbelith working/contacting as an extension of my Invisibles re-reading project.

And I've been meaning to write Grant M. an email too lately. Funny you should mention that.

Also, on the transducer subject, today at work people started talking about Mangos for about 1/2 hour - how healthy they are, their anti-viral properties. This was while I was skimming the Magick thread. Then later, when it seemed all mango talk had stopped, my bosses started talking about getting lunch and one of them said "Mango soup?" and they all laughed and started saying "Mangooooo!" in silly voices. So I think despite its limitations, the Peace Mango is still at large and, despite all its potential flaws that everyone discussed, it can still do a great deal of good. I still drink my Mango juice every week, and Naked Flame's terrific and infectious "Peace Mango" song can not be underestimated (I love that song so much!!).

peace & best wishes -- everyone, let us know how the Barbelith contact experience goes! thanks exp!

Thank you exp for all the work you are putting into this. I am intrigued by the thought of working with Barbelith the Egregore.

Still, just choosing one servitor over the other doesn't solve much in the way of Transducer. I think now however, there really are not the flaws in TRansducer that were mentioned before. As Hunterwolf pointed out, Who said negativity/war/conflict was its food supply? I thought mangoes and our collective & individual will/magickal energy were its supply.

Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to push Transducer aside and go play with the shiny, new servtor at least until we tie up some loose ends.

One more point, because I think we should be consistant and question perhaps the functioning of ALL servitors we work with collectively, not just one - Isn't the human brain generally geared toward evolving and learning anyway? How does one know if they are getting their results from engaging Barbelith?
