I think it's a little difficult to judge a show based on one episode... equally, I think it's also a little difficult to judge where it was intending to go, how it was going to evolve, etc, when it was cancelled midway through the first season. Certainly Buffy's first season didn't set the world on fire in terms of plot or character - spirited, certainly, but ultimately shallow.
There was a lot of potential in Firefly, and the fact that Whedon and his team were dealing with adult characters, much as he and his team are in Angel, seemed to be working out better for them. Less of the cheesy faux-valley speak, which ultimately, with the last few years being darker, more bloodthirsty outings, rendered Buffy and Willow, especially, just cardboard cutouts guaranteed to talk childish nonsense at wholly innappropriate moments. You end up looking at the Scoobie Gang, asking yourself "are you lot ever going to grow up?" |
