This starts up in a couple of weeks and I haven't heard a peep about it. There's a long ass thread with speculations and spoilers for Buffy's season 7 and there isn't even a short one about Firefly. Is the interest simply not there or are you all just holding your breaths?

First of all, I'd like to know what this show is about? The commercials don't really show much except for a few one liners in space. What's the premise?

The premise is "one-liners in space," as far as I can tell.

Just started watching Buffy and Angel this year and really enjoyed it. I guess I am on the honeymoon with Joss Whedon so I am holding my breath. Interesting tidbit, says on the FOX website that they signed up Ben "The Tick" Edlund as a writer.

Joss and Ben co-wrote the animated film TITAN A.E. It's about spaceships. Rent it for clues.

Most of us saw Firefly when it was called Blake's 7...

Oh shit. Titan AE sucked. Is the honeymoon over?

(warning!!! following message may contain unabashed optimism!!!)

Everytime I see a commercial for this show, I get so hyped to see it. I think it looks fantastic. Pure fun. I think it'll be tremendous.

re: blake's seven. if you must steal, steal from the best, right? But frankly, other than the rag tag crew on the run from the law aspect (which is a century older than Blake's 7), I'm not sure how similar it will be.

re: one liner's. Hell yes! One liners are half of what I love Joss Whedon for! The other half is characterization, and from the brief glimpses I've seen, I have high hopes in that department too.

re: Titan AE. I didn't think it was THAT bad and besides, I think Ben and Joss were only two out of like a dozen writers on that script, and besides it had to go through the Disney machine.

I'll happily eat my words if I have to, but I think Firefly will be the best new show of the season.

TITAN AE wasn't Disney. It was another attempt by the underappreciated Don Bluth directed to provide an animation alternative to the Mouse, under the auspices of 20thC Fox.
Full writing credits:

Hans Bauer and Randall McCormick (story)
Ben Edlund, John August, and Joss Whedon (screenplay)

Far less cooks pissing in the broth than the average Disney film.

Not a bad little movie, but nothing life-changing: I liked the design sense--I found it similar to that of the comic book THE RED STAR.

Anyway.

I'm not holding my breath.

When I hear the phrase "Western in Space", I think "Galaxy Rangers".

I've heard that the dialogue seems forced, but that could just be because the actors haven't gotten a feel for their characters yet.

I just wonder how long this show will last on Fox. Fox isn't exactly known for keeping decent shows on. I mean, come on, does anybody really like Grounded for Life?

..or The Tick and Greg The Bunny. Im suprised Family Guy lasted as long as it did. Im looking forward to Firefly (though I dislike the look of the ship). Im just hoping it isnt too hokey. Fingers crossed.

I liked Greg the Bunny. Grounded for Life is utter crap. It's a miracle it's lasted this long.

I hope Firefly is a success but Fox's track record with serious or sci-fi shows isn't exactly the best. Dark Angel, Space: Above and Beyond, Millenium, and a score of others haven't exactly succeeded.

Trijhaos: So do I. I was refering to it as one of the good shows that got cancelled and not in the same category as grounded for life.

Yeah, kinda looks to me like Outlaw Star (anime, see Cartoon Network) versus a sci-fi channel show, like Farscape or possibly Lexx. It's hard to tell from the comercials.

I am holding my breath. Last night my family and I conversed over dinner our favorite comercials.

Hmmm you know I actually liked Space Above and Beyond at times, it was a bit like Stargate in that while it sucked to begin with you could see it evolving into some near cool as the series progressed. That silent episode with the clone guy on the run after his fighter went down was an excellent piece of sci-fi and drama in general.

And if its even half as good as Farscape I'll like it. Bet it doesn't have muppets though.

13:56 / 10.09.02
god love a muppet! Even though there's no aliens in Firefly, there's got to be a way to get fit muppets in somehow. Maybe one of the crew has a pet monkey... or a disembodied head!

I'm looking forward to this, it sounds like it'll be quite interesting and although I hate to say it I'm sick of Buffy.

Anyone know if its going to be shown in the UK, I imagine it'll be on Sky 1 first and then maybe Channel 4, I guess it depends on how much of a success it is in the states.

I'm still trying to absorb the rotten stink of last night's season premiere of "Enterprise". I retract any good things I had to say about it before. I was wrong. It's time to kill off the Star Trek franchises once and for all. 36 years is long enough.

I have the feeling that Firefly is going to be pretty bad, but at least it's got a space hooker (this is FOX, the network that stands for class that we're talking about). They spent 8.7 million dollars on the pilot, so I suspect it's all downhill from there. Who knows? I'll watch the pilot. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised because my standards for the networks have sunk to an all time low.

It does amuse me that some fanboys are having a fit because Firefly is apparently replacing Dark Angel.

Jessica Alba is an extremely hot up and coming actress and FOX is now at risk of losing her permanently for this and future projects.

Awwwwwwww. Isn't that sad?

I do miss LEXX. At least they threw a few curve balls on the typical sci-fi series.

(Warning! incoming spoiler

I mean, how many shows blow up the Earth at the end of the series instead of the beginning? (see Showtimes's Odyssey 5, yet another clichéd and boring SF series)

Without getting in to specifics for those of us who will have to wait until January to see it, would the words 'reset button' and 'hit the' feature in your reasons for disliking it?

What a shame, 'cos I think the head Suliban bloke is quite sexy... for a lizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzard.

Yeah, the Federation motto should be: "There's no dramatic situation so dire or tragic that the Federation can't resolve it quickly and without the slightest trace of consequences."

Off topic, but one thing I did like about Enterprise opener was the crawl spaces. In TNG, DS9, and Voyager they were veritable tiny hallways. In this ship there are pipes and wires and shit in the way, you actually need little people to navigate them. Even then it is difficult. Hopefully they will release an R rated version of the end of that scene on DVD.

As for "Firefly": Not a pilot type episode, but they give you enough backstory to get started. The big special effects shots were very nice, probably the best I have seen on TV. The actors were passable. Not exactly nuanced performances, but I imagine they will get better in time. Whedon did not try to club me over the head with "the future", like calibrating deflector shields and scanning for life signs. Instead he let the characters act like normal human beings (I am glad these people are not in the space military) in an interesting setting that happens to feature interplanetary travel.

As a sci-fi fan I enjoyed it. Yeah, there were some corny one-liners too.

It just screamed "wait..its gonna get better". Not that it was bad, I rather liked it. Still hate the front of the ship...now I'm just waiting for the guy with the cheese on his head to make an appearance..

Ahhh... us limeys are just gonna have to wait. Unless it's on Kazaa by now (starts smiling).

And don't go dissing Space: Above and Beyond. Yeah, it was Tour of Duty in space, but what could be better than that?

I lo-o-o-o-o-ved it. Thought it was top notch for a first episode.

Here's the best I can do without spoilers:

--Characters: all good. plenty of potential development, plenty of personal conflifts

--Dialogue: witty, stylized, fun. reminiscent of Buffy at it's best, only without the pop culture references. Also, I was surprised how much I prefered seeing Joss-style voices come out of adults, rather than teenagers.

--Violence: Believable, fun, and surprising.

--Look: I don't know shit about cinematography, but I thought there were some neat camera angles and I loved the way the "technology" looked.

--Setting: Pretty much endless potential.

Think, Deep Space Nine crossed with Blake's 7, set in the Cowboy Bebop universe, from the makers of Buffy and Angel.

I give it a 9 out of 10.

Also, my roommate says you can download it from Xnews, whatever that means....

I thought it was ok. It really didn't hold my interest enough for me to give it my undivided attention. Who are these people? The first episode is supposed to introduce the characters and why exactly they're all together. It's not supposed to throw you into what seems to be the middle of a series.

Harold Washington died for you
17:15 / 21.09.02
IIRC FOX indicated they did not want a two hour pilot episode in september to kick off their new shows. So Whedon & Co. put together friday's ep to introduce the concept in one hour. The original pilot (two hours with commercials) will air during november sweeps.

Once again, my theory that Fox is run by monkeys with lobotomies ia proven true.

A pilot is supposed to be run at the beginning of the series, not towards the middle.

gridley
13:27 / 23.09.02
Well, Joss admitted that the original pilot didn't have nearly action for a first episode so he didn't have too big a problem ditching it for a while.

dude Trijhaos calm down man! FOX lets shows air longer to see if they gain an audience longer than the other 3 major networks! come on, the others have been known to drop a show after 2 or 3 episodes, at least FOX is nice enough to air all the episodes they order and hope it'll pay off eventually...

I'm not really sure what to make of this series. 2 episodes in and both were fillers. There's nothing wrong with the premise, the writing is fine, the special effects are great, it's well produced, the acting is ok but it's just not hitting the mark for me.
Fair enough, I'm not going to write it off on the basis of 2 episodes but something has gotta happen soon or this show is going to tank, big time.

I have 3 main problems with this, the first of which I understand is MY problem and I'll have to deal with it..

1: The music. I can't stand it. Everytime that violin plays I can't help thinking of bloody Young Guns 2. Argh.

2: The guns. What's with the guns? We're how many hundreds of years into the future and they're carrying six-shooters? Despite the danger of projectile weapons on board a space ship they're just rubbish.

3: The captain. Is it just me or does this guy (sorry, don't know the actors name) just seem completely mis-cast?

Just my opinions though, I'm sure if they let Mr Whedon stretch his wings this show will be great given time.

Remember, in Whedon shows the main characters are always the least interesting charatcers played by bad actors

Has any one watched any more episodes? I've seen them all (including the orginal piolet) but not the train job. I love this show and i really don't see why more people aren't watching it. Its got great scripts, characters, setting etc. Its just brilliant. Got a bad feeling though, seems likely it'll get cancelled. stupid fox
