I got the archives to come back a couple times before, but it usually goes away again. I'll take another swing at it.

uh, blogger archives are usually a little buggy, yeah ~^ if you make changes on the template or settings and then publish the archives go away (a solution to that is republishing a post once you are done). Blogger suggests changîng archiving to weekly and then back to monthly to solve that kind of thing, but I don't know if it works.

So it seems like Minty should start putting on her detective hat sometime soon, trying to figure out what has happened to victim #1.

Yes, Mr. Grant. I would say so. "Ready when you are, officer Pembry"

I've given Minty a burning desire to know and a fear of cops, which together should be enough to force her to do some interesting things....

I'd say it needs to look more like someone trying really hard to look ormal. Instead of "We" the person should return to using "I", perhaps...

ho ho holy crap...

(psst: who is writing arthur's blog? the sect leader? an insect leader? it has to be human [anthropomorphic at least, so it can type]. So, who is it?)

gridley
17:15 / 09.09.02
Arthur's skin. His shed skin can still type because of the weight of still-attached fingernails....

I was thinking of it more as a disincarnate information-being. A kind of ghost, I suppose, or a bodiless identity trying to get through from someplace else however it can.

By the way, it'd be really nice if Minty kind of came to the conclusions we've been reaching here - if her investigations spelled out what we've been trying to put behind the scenes. Because her approach has to be more practical.

How should it go?? Because it seems like it's time....

Perhaps she shouldn't be so sure of what she has found. Subtleness a must here. Also, she should me grossed out, slightly paranoid, perhaps?
Give her a good reason why she would write about this potentially dangerous thing in her weblog...

I'm trying to think of an approach, one that is easier to believe than the "I saw Arthur's skin in the apartment and he's amiss!"

Ooh, bonus points: make her find some strange relic in the center of his living room. Make her steal it.

Does Minty pick locks? Is she breaking and entering? I kind of doubt that Art gaver her a set of keys...

gridley
18:05 / 16.09.02
I think she would knock for a while, then try climbing the fire escape up to his floor (no doubt seeing something interesting things along the way), and finding his window wide open (Boston's pretty hot in the summer and Arthur wanting to cultivate bugs probably wouldn't use air conditioning). So she's in...

is the skin intact? I mean, still human shaped? I don't see how we could be possibly be subtle if that's the case. Maybe there are just patches of skin in vaguely suggestive shapes, but all ripped and stretched from his new body tearing itself slowly free....

I was thinking of one of those italicized Lovecraft endings, like: It was only then that I truly understood the meaning of the loathsome mass of shed skin in the apartment!
(From the story "The Skin in the Apartment," of course.)

So writing backwards from that point, as gridley says, it'd make more sense for her not to know what it is at first.

And, now that I think of it, one of the creepy Lovecraft things is the way you can be really close to the THING without realizing it - just over the threshhold, inside your walls, that sort of thing.

Maybe Arthur's physical body is still in the apartment, only transformed into a swarm of disgustingly skin-colored insects. Something like roaches, only not.

So Minty goes up the fire escape, lifts the window to get in, sees this heap of skin, and then a bunch of really strange bugs swarms out across the ceiling and up to the roof. And she runs.

How's that sound? Anyone wanna do that or something like it?

And if anyone wants in, just ask - there's plenty of room for more writers.

Jade: how's a big ass mess of tiny bugs? or bugs that kind of run into one another like water droplets on a windshield? I'm pressed for time right now, but it might happen tomorrow.

I'd go more for minty seeing the skin and thinking at first it's Arthur, then thinking maybe it's just a really weird arts&crafts project, or maybe it really is Arthur...no, wait a minute.

She reaches out to touch it.

At that moment, she hears someone in the bathroom. Someone big, and uncoordinated, and definately not Arthur, banging and scratching against the inside of the door...the knob wriggles (but it's hard to turn these human doorknobs when all you've got are insect legs...)

Minty freaks & flees.

Logos

Two more things:

1. Maybe, just before she runs, she's holding on to a small South American jade amulet, and when she freaks, she's still got the thing in her hand. (Later, she can obsess over it, call it "precious" or whatever.)

2. I think Arthur's apartment is no longer really where it's going on. We want the thing to be abandoned, so that, for example, Arthur might get lonely and decide to visit Minty, by climbing up the side of her building and looking in the window...looking for her or the mystical gewgaw she took from his place.

gravitybitch

This is raising the hairs on the back of my neck...

I think the apartment should feel almost abandoned - smell musty even though the window's been open, be dusty (dust is, after all, mostly shed skin cells)... Noise from the bathroom is great - maybe Minty can't quite tell if it's from one something big making tiny motions (spasms?) or lots of tiny things scrabbling around.

If we want to get really melodramatic, Minty is on the verge of freaking out and bolting when somebody knocks on the front door just like she did 20 minutes ago, the noise from the bathroom stops cold and then there's a bigger noise from the closet... she doesn't quite remember how she got out of the apartment, but she seems to have picked up this odd little talisman and put it in her pocket. I wonder what it's made of?

a really weird arts&crafts project

One day, my girlfriend and I juiced about six pounds of citrus fruit and got really buzzed on the sugar and vitam c. In between batches, we'd take the pulp and press it flat against one of her window screens. After it dried out in the sun for a week or so, the finished product was very much diseased skin. Yellowish-orange mostly, but greenish in places, very unevenly shaped, swollen here, torn there.

Is it ok if the talisman is a woodcut? Since we've introduced those before...

OK, it's done.
