The New Doctor Who

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
18:32 / 08.12.08
Okay, given that the only exposure to Joseph I've had is the previous Ecceleston Who work, what else would be worth watching with him in it? I'm curious to get a feel for his acting chops.

This isn't actually anywhere near to being confirmed still, is it? BBC News were interviewing David Morrissey this morning about his chances of getting the role, iirc.

Peep Show, definitely. Although you will spend the next year demanding to know if that is normal pooing, Davros.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

Frankly, we're pretty much looking at a brand new year of speculation. There has been no official search as of yet.

I'd bet there's spates of actors, professional, semi-, and non-, whom are dying to have the chance for this role.

Fuck all of these ideas. The next Doctor Who will be Isiah Whitlock Jr, the actor who plays State Senator Clay Davis in The Wire.

"A Dalek invasion of Earth? Sheeeee-iiit!"

Snoop as his companion.

SPOILERS

I understand that David M. is to be a Doctor, teamed with Tennant, D., in the Dr. Who Yulemas Special. ALthough who knows what that means, long-term, for casting.

Snoop! His friend is indeed a doctor, not a lawyer.

obviously, joining facebook groups is the most efficient way in the world to accomplish jack shit, but...

Since nobody else is discussing "The Next Doctor," I thought I'd do so here. So, hurray for that! I've made it known in the past that I'm a big fan of giant monsters stomping their way through the Whoniverse- Abadon in Torchwood rocked wonderfully, I thought. So when Giant Steampunk Cyber-Mech was revealed I thought it was just sublime.

The episode itself was a bit hit and miss, like all the X-Mas specials after the Christmas Invasion. The tone jarred in a lot of places. Jackson remembers his wife's death and the plinky plonky music assaults the scene as the Doctor searches the house for more cyber stones. I suppose such contrast is usual in Doctor Who, but on this occasion it just felt a little off. The direction was a little lacking. Andy Goddard just can't do action properly (the two Doctors being dragged by the Cybershade was pretty neat though), and the whole thing lacked any sense of urgency. He's also very fond of putting the camera at an angle (dutching?) which always reeks of being a very lazy way of trying to make a shot look interesting.

Dervla Kirwan's character was the best thing about the episode though. RTD could have further developed the interesting gender issues throughout the episode. Hartigan seemed to be very anti-man and pro-women throughout, yet was also very much a product of the male-skewed society she was so intent on overthrowing. Her dismissive treatment of Rosita as a prostitute was the thing most indicative of her hypocrisy, I thought.

So, yeah, bits of greatness mixed with very mediocre stuff. Better than Voyage of the Damned though!

The only good bits were with Davids Morrisey and Tennant, otherwise it was terrible. Why exactly do Cybermen need weak little orphan children to work in their engine rooms?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

Yeah, hit or miss for me, too, but loads better than Voyage of the Damned.

I liked Miss Hartigan quite a bit. I too didn't understand the need for orphans in order to power the giant mecha-cyberman.

I liked the bit where we find out why Jackson Lake thinks he's the Doctor, if only to see a nice montage of Doctors before.

I should probably see it one more time and see if it hits any more favorable spots.

Why exactly do Cybermen need weak little orphan children to work in their engine rooms?

A colleague of mine (big musicals fan) suggested it was something to do with RTD making a nod to Annie (the orphanage matron in which is called Miss Hannigan). Doesn't make it any better, really.

I guess they wanted to preserve power supplies and could comparativley easily get hold of a bunch of orphans.

But, you know, this time tomorrow we'll all be talking about something else entirely.

Hartigan knew how the poorhouses organised their influx of children, because she worked in one. She said so herself.

Personally, if I'd be picking the special apart for anything it'd be that the script never made any real effort to give her proper motivation for her actions, beyond "woman, bit pissed off about imbalance of power", and that the Doctor's solution of telling her to look at what she'd become made no sense whatsoever, given that she'd previously been shown as nothing but utterly ruthless and this was precisely what she'd always wanted and intended.

she worked in one

I was working under the assumption that her hatred of the men and her style of dress was not because she had worked for them but that she had worked, y'know, under them. Maybe I'll watch it again under the influence of less chicken and sprouts some time. I was fairly underwhelmed mainly because a good quarter of the show was (again) people saying just how bloody fantastic and wonderful the Doctor was rather than letting him actually be fantastic. Show, don't tell, Davies.

Anyway, we'll be getting news on Dave's replacemnt tomorrow afternoon (5:35, BBC3), so that should be nice.

The "what have we become?!" self-awareness trick has been used on the Cybermen ever since they returned in the new series. It made sense within the series' own context, I'd argue, but I agree that it was a very lazy solution to the episode.

It's probably going to be Paterson Joseph (or Chiwetel Eljiofor), so I'd be pleasantly surprised if the new Doctor was somebody completely unexpected. Or Michael Sheen, please and thanks.

It's going to be Lenny Henry. Obviously.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
15:43 / 03.01.09
I'm confused; David Morrisey's the future Doctor in the episode, but he's not officially the next Doctor?

In the christmas special he only believed himself to be the Doctor because the infostamp riddled his brain.

So who is the new doctor?

Matt Smith.

Ahem.... whoooooooooooo??????

Ooh. A white 26-year old Londoner. Kick down those boundaries, BBC!

I must have seen him in "In Bruges", but donĀ“t remember him.

Personally I am quite glad. Whilst people like Tilda Swinton and Joseph Patterson are great actors and would play excellent timelords, the character of the Doctor is well established.

I feel that as much as it may upset PC enthusiasts the Doctor is a white, eccentric English man and to mess with this is to mess with the formula which makes the show so good and eventually serve to move it so far from the original premise that it would kill it.

So I think good luck to Matt and 3 cheers to Steve Moffat for an excellent choice.

I was very skeptical about Tennant taking over after Ecclestone, but ended up loving him in the role, because it's Doctor Who*. I am very skeptical about this guy, but expect I'll end up loving him because it's Doctor Who. However, I am disappointed.
* realising it was the guy from "Taking Over The Asylum" helped too.

'Emo' Doctor? Buster Doctor?

Anyway you slice it, it does look like the BBC's shat in its trousers a bit here.

He's a bit X-Factor, isn't he? That head turn at the end of the final montage was a bit silly wasn't it? Sad it's not Paterson Joseph (I'd been watching tons of his stuff in anticipation) as I've loved his acting style in everything I've seen him in. I'm a bit indifferent to the roles Matt Smith has played so far, but I'm sure he'll be fine. So hard to follow Tennant though, isn't it? The fans will never have a Doctor so definitively theirs again, will they? Tennant loved the show and was an unashamed fan-boy, but this new guy is apparently new to the mythology of the show. Still, can't judge him based on that.

Despite how my earlier post seemed I'm quite interested in the possibilities. His face is fascinating, an amalgam of Chris Morris and an Aardman character. And he's obviously got something for them to cast him. It's not like there's a shortage of ambitious young 26 year old actors...

Matt Smith, rocking the cardigan and big hair look. But the real litmus test of his success is: Will Kali fancy him?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
16:58 / 03.01.09
No, she will not.

Honestly, I'm horribly disappointed. I really wanted someone older for the role. I dislike this idea of Doctors getting younger and younger just to satisfy some probable bullshit target audience. Admittedly, I wasn't sure I'd like Tennant but he had enthusiasm and cheekiness to burn.

Oh, fuck you, BBC.

On the other hand, Smith does look like the kind of guy who might be prepared to entertain some of Russell T Davies' more outre requests with regared to the Tardis and so on;

a sweating, red-faced Welshman approaches a lantern-jawed, lank-haired, young actor across a bleeping console

RTD: There's more room inside it than you'd think.

I can only imagine the new Who uniform: long-sleeved shirts with holes cut out of the cuffs so he can shyly stick his thumbs through them, skinny jeans, and those stupid puffy trainers "hip" people seem to favor.

Gah.

There is probably going to be much tossing of his forelock in every single episode...

He actually reminds me slightly of Jason Fleymng, only you know, I like Jason Fleymng.

yeah got to say i agree with the negavitity here, altho i also think that patterson joseph and chojetwa whatsisname would not have been right for the role, so in that sense i'm relieved. but this guy is too young and "hipster"...

normally you might say its too early to judge but i think it is all too obvious that the producers have "lost it" or been forced to appeal to "the kids" by the BBC suits...
