He destroyed Galaphra in the time war , possibly destroying his own race ? If he is the last one then on his death the Time lords become no more.

Sorry, I'm still not clear as to what this has to do with the conversation, are you saying that the Doctor IS as bad as the Daleks or isn't or are you talking about something else entirely?

I think the Doctor's only big flaw is still giving Daleks a second chance. I think they used up their last chance round about the time they tried to drop a bomb in the Earth's core.

But that's me.

What im saying is the Doctor has already contemplated and though of and in some cases used those methods . He can never be as bad as the Darleks becuase he always seeks what he percieves as teh best all round option rather then either, the easiest most logical or that which fits whithin is ideological (or teh current scripts ) frame work.

What makes you think the Daleks weren't seeking what they perceived as the best all around option?

The script and plot convince . Plus their one dimensional (ok with the exception of Khan maybe) killing machines with a 2 track record. Theyve always seemed to represent a fundamentalist/fascist extreme logical stance.

The dangers of pure reason without emotion, so as a literay tool you couldnt really have them any other way and still remain as Darleks

Just watched Music of the Spheres on YouTube. I guess you had to be there. Still, you can't beat a bit of Graske action, can you?

Funnily enough, Music of the Spheres works much better on audio. You can guess quite easily what's going on from the dialogue and at least you can hear the audience's reaction to the Graske on audio. Wonderful concert too, and Catherine Tate gets a fantastic and well-deserved reception. Worth trying to find it for a listen.

Read somewhere on the Intarwebs that RTD said that Tennant had made his decision regarding his tenure as the Doctor and the BBC had already been told.

Reading more again on the Intarwebs---it's my day off and man, am I being super lazy---about rumors regarding Tennant's tenure (heh! Fun!), I'm inclined to agree with some Brit blogger that he will likely continue being the Doctor throughout the 2009 specials, the 2010 Moffat season, and then step down. It just makes sense. I would like to think that even Tennant is excited and interested to see what Moffat going to do. But of course, money talks and all that....

OK, I only just watched the last 3 of season 4.

My two MAIN thoughts... probably more to follow if I remain conscious much longer.

First, I always cry in these things, but the Doctor's goodbye to Cribbins is quite possibly the one that has upset me the most so far.

Secondly- the Daleks, with their lack of conscience, are basically /b/tards without the appreciation of lulz. Dalek-Khan managed to successfully troll his whole species, PLUS the rest of the universe, and had lulz too. Dalek-Khan is the ultimate /b/tard.

Just saw the final three. Nice to see everybody together, although I am not caring for Martha's new shiny jackboots routine. WHAT IS UP WITH BILLIE PIPER"S TEETH? Loved Davros and the crazy seer Dalek (Khan?).

However, I did not like the whole Donna ending. It felt sour to me, the first time DW has failed to add in a spark of hope amidst the tragedy. It seemed to be thematically asking if death is preferable to alzheimer's. Ick. What a shitty way to leave a great character! Not my cup'o'tea anyway.

I think i loved the ending with Donna most of all to be honest. I think she'd turned out to be my favourite New Who companion so far. Wonderful acting from Tate throughout and i thought the way of her leaving the Doctor was great. I swelled up a bit with Rose, of course, and Martha even but it was all about Donna for me and they ended beautifully. That and Cribbins of course. Nasty and horrible of course, but what do you expect? I loved it, me.

'It seemed to be thematically asking if death is preferable to alzheimer's.'

That did to be a bit of a theme throughout the season though don't you think? Riversong for example and the Library episodes.

I think perhaps you mean "welled up".

It's too early in the morning for me to be mature ...

Mark Parsons It seemed to be thematically asking if death is preferable to alzheimer's.

Except that Donna doesn't have a degenerative mental condition but otherwise, yeah, exactly the same.

Mark Parsons
06:14 / 11.09.08
Well, she's forgotten who she is/was. She's forgotten the best of herself, her change, her evolution, the time of her life. She's forgotten an important friend.

That is a form of degeneration, an unmaking, as far as she herself can recall, of all that she has lived/known/done in recent months. And her family has been advised not to try and remind her who she was, lest they upset her/reality.

Sounds similar to alzheimer's patients who start to loose themselves, their personalities, their experiences and even memories of who their family members and friends are.

So yes, haus, "exactly" like alzheimers except that I'm talking about thematic/metaphorical riffs on that horrifying condition. Personally, I think I might prefer death to Alzheimer's. I lost a friend to last month, but when she went, she at very least knew the friends and family she was surrounded by. Forgetting everyone, forgetting self, seems more tragic somehow.

Mine too, although I initially disliked her in the X-mas ep and was dismayed when she was announced as the new companion character.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Mark. However, FYI, that's not me, above - it's Our Lady (usually) of the Flowers. Check the "previously" entry if you're uncertain. If I were to disagree with you re: Alzheimer's (which, incidentally, I do - the foreshadowing in "turn left" essentially tells us what we ought to be thinking about this, which is that Donna has tremendous capacity for goodness, courage and compassion, which will never be realised without extraordinary circumstances - the tragedy is that she will never get the chance to realise how much more she could be; that is, the resonant issue is wasted potential, not loss of memory per se) I imagine I would do it differently.

Me too, but I grew to like her a lot by the end. For a few episodes at the beginning I liked the character but not the actress- not sure if she got better or if it was my opinion that changed. A lot of people have said they can't separate her from her role as a comedian, but I've never seen her show so that wasn't an issue.

Mark - you have all my sympathy. I can see why you would see echoes of Alzheimers in Donna's condition, though I suspect it's more to do with interpretation rather than intent. But that's the fallacy of authorial intent all over and it's certainly a valid reading.

It's certainly a theme that has been explored over at Upper Boat recently, in one of the early Sarah Jane adventures. It's the one currently featured on the beeb i-player. So, you know, it's just possible that the issue was resonating through RTD's mind when he wrote the story.

Haus, I agree about the loss of potential angle, but still will also stick with the "sad she's no longer herself" interpretation too. Sorry for the monikker confusion.

Did anyone else recently read that in a pinch to come up with a bigger celebrity than Kylie for this year's Christmas special, RTD came up with the frankly amazing idea that... right... get this... J.K. Rowling should get infected by a bug from space that BRINGS ALL HER FICTIONAL CREATIONS TO LIFE AND MAKES THE DOCTOR FIGHT THE WIZARDS!!ONETF!??

Like... what?

Thankfully, Tennant apparently told him the idea was an absolute shiter.

So says The Metro.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
18:17 / 18.09.08
I heard the second bit, but not the first, which I suspect is someone from the Metro using their imagination, as Warners would probably have something to say about that, Rowling would probably not enjoy having her characters beaten by the Doctor and if it turned out that in the Whoniverse J.K. Rowling wrote a completely different series of books about a different set of wizards then what would be the point?

DavidXBrunt
06:10 / 19.09.08
The story goes that it would start with Rowling being badgered by a journalist about what she's going to write next. She doesn't know. That night, sat at her desk with a blank sheet of paper a space bug flies in, jumps on her back, and recreates reality around her. What follows is a victorian style magical adventure that has Rowlingesque trappings but none of the established characters. A copyright free homage. Happy Shopper Harry Potter.

The Doctor fights through this world and meets J.K.

The End.

I had also read about RTD's suggestion about a JK-themed Xmas special and was also thankful that Tennant did tell him that it was a horrible idea.

I realize that RTD's heavy hand will be responsible for the Xmas special but for god's sake, let up a little. Cybermen in Victorian London will be fine, thanks.
