Well, she's forgotten who she is/was. She's forgotten the best of herself, her change, her evolution, the time of her life. She's forgotten an important friend.
That is a form of degeneration, an unmaking, as far as she herself can recall, of all that she has lived/known/done in recent months. And her family has been advised not to try and remind her who she was, lest they upset her/reality.
Sounds similar to alzheimer's patients who start to loose themselves, their personalities, their experiences and even memories of who their family members and friends are.
So yes, haus, "exactly" like alzheimers except that I'm talking about thematic/metaphorical riffs on that horrifying condition. Personally, I think I might prefer death to Alzheimer's. I lost a friend to last month, but when she went, she at very least knew the friends and family she was surrounded by. Forgetting everyone, forgetting self, seems more tragic somehow. |
