Oh goodness yes, XK - I hope it was obvious I was bantering along, not making a formal declaration about what LN requires?

All this talk of LN is confusing me...

Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to the grand opening.

Gypsy is wrangling the last item on the go live list, the Design. We're bringing the LN Mods up to speed now (they are all so far Temple regulars) on the separate but equal modland.

The discussions are stellar and I'm wicked excited.

Design is looking awesome so far. Once that is in place, it really shouldn't be that far from opening its doors.

Having only really relied on books for teaching and not having much of an outlet for talking about esoterism and spirituality, you don't realise what a joy finding Barbelith was for me. I had seen it now and again but mostly lurked a bit or outright ignored it because of the locks on membership and/or application processing.

Then I read more and learned a bit more and researched more and inquired more. I finally took the plunge and requested membership here. Finally I would be able to have a place where I could test ideas and learn from those with similar interests!

I didn't lurk enough to hear the not too distant rumbling of what may be a drawn out death rattle, it seems...

So much potential here: Still... (Ever the optimist) and there are still good people with interesting thoughts, well written. But my interest always has always lain with the Temple and the silence in there is deafening.

Please say that Liminal Nation is open to new applicants...

I must echo that thought! I am both new to the Barbelith and new to esoterism/magick/paganism in general and was quite pleased to find my membership request FINALLY accepted... though dismayed to find Templers on their way elsewhere.

Please, please let Liminal Nation be open to new applicants.

When LN goes live there will be a membership application page that has a text box the applicant uses to explain why they wish to join. That text along with the application request is automatically sent to the Trustees. The content is taken very seriously (not the applicant's grammar in particular so no worries if English is your second language). The Trustees approve membership based on thoughtful intelligent presentations of why the applicant wishes to join the LN community specifically.

Yeah. LN will be open to anyone who is prepared to write a short application telling the forum moderators a bit about themselves and why they are interested in joining the board. The point of LN is to develop all of the things that barbelith temple does really well, but without the technical limitations of this place. One of the major technical limitations of barbelith is its lack of an effective banning facility which has resulted in it being so fucking impossible for anybody to register due to the laborious applications process. LN will actually be a lot easier to join than barbelith. However, unlike barbelith, there's a bit more of a purpose to LN - which is to generate really interesting and intelligent debate on magic and related subjects - so it has certain submission guidelines for what is and is not acceptable content. Nothing too onerous, but there is an editorial policy to promote constructive and engaging debate on the site so that it is interesting to read and participate in.

LN isn't open yet. It will be soon. Watch this space for more details, as they say.

The design is fantastic and I'm jumping up and down watching it all come together. There are some amazing people throwing in to make it happen. Currently Gyrus and Mr. A are my heroes.

Yes Gyrus is working on implementing the new design. (He's my hero!) Once it is in and the beta testers give the thumbs up it will most likely go live.

So status update, we've implemented a fair amount of shiny shiny goodness on the look'n'feel part of the LN board thanks to Mr. A, Gyrus, grant and everybody.

Methinks we are in the final beta shakedown.

Hey guys. I know I haven't been around for a bit, but I have been following the Liminal Nation idea for a while with excitement. I'd love to get a peek; I'm interested to see if it really is what I need to rekindle my interest in discussing and developing spirituality with others.

Any 'Lith member who wants in please PM me your email address. Even though you folks get an invite we do take the application process very seriously. Please take your time and fill out the form on LN to the best of your ability once you get there. (it's on the site so don't PM me anything but your email addy)

We're still shuffling a few design elements around but it's pretty close to being done at this stage. Well, with the caveat that perfect is the enemy of done.

I'm interested to see if it really is what I need to rekindle my interest in discussing and developing spirituality with others.

I hope it will be. I'd say it's up to everyone involved to try and make LN everything that it has the potential to be. It's still a story waiting to be written, for the most part. We've built it, and we have certain broad guidelines in place based on our collective experience of participating on Barbelith Temple over the last eight years or so, but beyond that it's up to LN's contributors to shape its present and future.

If you would like to be a part of that, please PM XK or I with your email address and we'll send you details of how to apply for membership. Then once your application has been approved - which I'd hasten to add is a far less onerous procedure than applying to be a member of Barbelith (but does require supplying a bit of info about yourself and your interests) - start posting!

LN will only be as good as the material we collectively contribute to it, so start some interesting new threads, post to the existing discussions that are on there, help us pour some life and energy into the framework that we've built. That goes out to anyone who is already registered but may not have checked into the site or posted for awhile.

Here's the current "what is Liminal Nation?" copy that we have running on the board. I might revisit it at some point when I've got more time on my hands, but this is the version we are running with at the moment.

What is Liminal Nation?

LIMINAL NATION is a discussion forum created to promote a visible and intelligent discourse around the theory and practice of magic, spirituality and experiential religion.

It has a clear editorial policy on the material that it publishes and the level of critical engagement it expects from contributors. This can be easily summarised in three points:

1. An approach to the discussion of magic that is rooted in one's own direct personal experience and/or a reasonable level of academic rigour.

2. A collective investment in interrogating one's practice and one's beliefs about that practice through peer discussion.

3. A zero tolerance policy on hate speech, racism, sexism, genderism, etc.

Liminal Nation welcomes committed theorists and practitioners of all races, genders, sexualities, cultures, spiritualities and magical traditions. It has been designed as a space where a constructive and mutually beneficial dialogue may take place between interested parties from radically different backgrounds and understandings. Contributors to Liminal Nation are expected to be mindful and sensitive towards matters of cultural integrity and cultural appropriation, whilst maintaining a global rather than a parochial perspective on the world's magical traditions. It is a space where the academic can swap notes with the practitioner, and where parties as varied as hermetic magicians, Voodoo Mambos, Indian tantrikas, left-hand path sorcerers, Christian mystics, Thelemites, psychedelicists and witches can come together and potentially learn something from one another. Liminal Nation hopes to encourage a healthy cross-fertilisation of ideas and to create a productive melting pot of influences, where our planet's diversity of magical traditions may be respected for their individual integrity, whilst being recognised as a single global body of knowledge of relevance and importance to our species as a whole.

Liminal Nation welcomes contributors of all levels of experience. It is a place for "beginners" as much as it is a place for "experts", as these two terms can be somewhat relative. No matter what level of experience we may be at - we are all still students. More important than "time served under the hat" is a demonstrable understanding of the culture and ideals of the board and a commitment to promoting constructive and intelligent debate on magic and related subjects.

Liminal Nation is committed to providing a supportive environment where both beginners and the more experienced can get solid peer-to-peer advice from other practitioners from a variety of backgrounds. The forum is comprised of a diversity of voices and perspectives, and you may encounter conflicting and contradictory opinion from its contributors, but the ethic of the board - enshrined in its editorial policy - is to help you keep your practice sane, healthy, responsible, and geared towards improving your life and making you happier and healthier as a result of your investigation into magic.

Contributors to Liminal Nation are expected to generate high quality content and engage with other contributors respectfully and as peers. Heated and passionate debate is the lifeblood of any discussion forum, but any material which significantly transgresses the editorial policy of the board stated above may lead to moderator action. It requires a degree of maintenance from all involved to create a space where we can collectively begin to grasp towards an understanding of the role and function of magic in 21st century society, discuss the various issues that arise out of that proposition, and support one another in the theory and practice of this field of activity.

The role of the magician or shaman has always been to explore the weirder edges of consciousness and to return back with something of value to the community and its survival needs. As a platform for promoting intelligent dialogue about magic and spirituality, Liminal Nation hopes to position itself as an iteration of this same process.

I've had issues since last night myself: A window asking for my name & password pops up and then tells me it's invalid. After three attempts I get a Server Error.

I hope I haven't been banned already...
