The super-hero comedy is something that hasn't really been explored yet, other than the upcoming Will Smith "Hancock" film and the abysal "Superhero Movie".

And My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Mystery Men, The Specials, The Tick, The Flash, Lois and Clark, the original Justlce League of America movie, and an honorable mention for the genuinely ace Sky High.

And the Adam West Batman, going way back. In terms of mainstream movie releases that are based around the idea of superheroes being or interacting with regular shlubs, that's down to Mystery Men and most obviously My Super Ex Girlfriend.

Oh, my love of Sky High knows no bounds. The only time I've been annoyed a flight wasn't longer, was when they switched it off 20min before the end as we began our descent into Phoenix ...

My Secret Identity was the most awesome show ever when I was a kid.

A couple of months short, but not a bad guess.

Yeah, but was it science fiction?

I haven't seen it yet, but this post skims on a few of the movie's iffy takes on women (as well as race, and the portrayal of the warzones).

Yeah... ze's over-read the movie. There's no narrative on earth that can survive that kind of scrutiny if you really put your mind to it (although obviously Iron Man isn't trying to be right on, and so therefore is an easy target).

Well, sigaliris (from Ziparrow's link) covered one style of immorality, while Plugged In Online helpfully covered the swearing, drinking and smoking. Are we still allowed to see the movie?

I'm not sure anyone was saying you aren't allowed to or even that you shouldn't.

True indeed - my meaning (which it is true I did not clearly elucidate) was 'in the *recent* spate of comic book Hollywood movies' i.e. the past 3-5 years or so. ("My Super Ex-GF" was definitely about 2-3 years ago, though, and "Sky High" may have been about 3-4 years ago, and it's funny that you mention S.H. since it just came up in conversation the other day and people talked about how well-done it was; haven't seen it yet myself, but heard it's a quality movie)

"The Flash" TV show wasn't comedy - it was playing it pretty straight, as I recall.

Played as straight as you can with Mark Hamill as the Trickster. It was done kind of hardboiled, actually, now that I can remember it.

Sky High's super-ace. I was compelled by WP's mention to download it, and I watched it last night.

Hopefully my cold will die down this week and I can actually go see Iron Man, even if only to laugh at Tony Stark's drunken flailing republican mega-armoured smackdowns.

yeah, the Flash was kind of hard-boiled. it was done hot on Burton's '89 Batman and had episodes written by Howard Chaykyn, with a 50s feel to it.

back to Iron Man, i saw it a bit like most Marvel comics: a well-crafted pizza, but always a pizza. with the same oil that stereotypical fanboys' fingers will grab comics with on a given Saturday.

hm, Newsarama points to the Marvel Universe background easter eggs in both Iron Man an the Hulk films. and that's not the Fury bit.

The Shield scene is intriguing, I suppose. But who is it aimed at? You'd need a sharp eye to notice it, which seems like something that anyone interested may no longer have, for various reasons.

All right, there's the DVD - one envisions 'Iron Man' easter egg DVD parties, but wouldn't those involved be better off buying a couple of sex dates over the internet, plus a lot of drugs, and end up feeling very sad and alone that way?

Perhaps.

But that's the sacred and beautiful dichotomy of being human.
