hm, I didn't find a thead on old shellhead movie, being directed by John Favreau with Robert Downey JR as Tony Stark and Jeff Bridger as Obadiah Stane.

a video of the SanDiego Comicon has surfaced with an extended trailer and it looks great. as if it was right out of the EXTREMIS Warren Ellis arc. the music works fine too.

I always had faith in Favreau. BOURNE IDENTITY and all.

That is very, very likeable. Gotta love the crowd reactions, too.

Normally I can't stand Iron Man unless he's completely shit-faced, but that actually looks kinda fun. Looks like 2008 is gonna be a bloody good year for superhero movies.

Weel, who would know? This Favreau guy looks like he actually knows what he's doing.

Iron Man has never been one of my favourite Marvel heroes (except as a member of the Avengers), but I always thought interestering his ambivalences. After all, "alcoholic", "weapons dealer" ans "womanizer" are not the characteristics one would normaly relate to a comic book hero, at least in these post-cold war-james bond years, but Robert Downey Jr is certainly the actor to pull it off.

He was, after all, part of Daredevil, not only the best superhero film yet made, but perhaps also the greatest film of all time.

I absolutely positively can't wait. In fact, I am going to kill a hostage every hour until it is released. Any idea when it's supposed to be out?

early may 2008.

Favreau is a good director. er... forget what I said about BOURNE IDENTITY.

I like how they play the 'weapons manufacturer' very ironically. no matter that he crushes Afghani rebels...

No.

Wait.

Stop.

Is it two hours yet?

I think so too!

Watching it again the other night, I was struck by how amazing Jennifer Aniston looked in combat. Hot enough to melt an iceberg! So different from how she seemed in 'Friends'.

Ever since the god-awfulness that was Civil War, Iron Man has left a worse taste in my mouth than usual. As for Favreau... yeah, he has Daredevil stink on him, but that pile was just as much Affleck / Garner's fault as it was Favreau's. Robert Downey Jr. always struck me as kind of the prime choice to play a drunken super hero. Or just a drunk.

I don't see why blame Favreau for DAREDEVIL as he was merely a supporting actor there

Yeah, but if Haus says it was his fault in a profoundly sarcastic manner, it must be truth. The fact that being a supporting actor and being a director are two completely different things has no bearing whatsoever.

Don't argue with the Haus, he knows all. Plus, you can make him mad, and you don't want that...

(Is it worth trying to explain that Haus was clearly not seriously attributing blame to Favreau, or shall I just stick to "Please stop trolling, Dead Megatron"?)

That trailer makes me very keen to see this, although I suspect the early parts in which Downey Jr plays Stark as an amoral arms-manufacturing playboy may be the most entertaining.

I think Favreau was about the best thing about Daredevil, although that is a very short list and very specific definition of "good". The same might be said of his directorial CV - depending on one's opinion of "Elf" and "Zathura, I suppose. These at least mean he has headed up effects-driven movies before, but he has the feel of a journeyman assigned to a once-prestigious product that the studio just wants to get out of the gate now - given that Tarantino, Whedon and finally Nick Cassavetes appear to have been connected to and then sundered from the project, this may not be far from the truth.

However, in his capacity as executive producer, he has shown a rare genius by casting RDJr., Hollywood's substance issues king, as Marvel's most brilliant wetbrain. Bonus points for a dream sequence in which he drowns in a lake of champagne.

Can we get back to mindless fanboy droning ? Specifically, to the specifics of how Tony ("Tony", that's right) managed to manufacture that first version of his armor from the depths of a coal mine with an accountant and a hammer?

Do you know anything, deja v? That's no accountant, it's Doctor... hrrmfrm, can't remember. And they have been captured by a ARMY.

The mooted fight with two F16s, in particular, and the generally rather good cast make me optimistic. Also, they use the Black Sabbath song as I've dreamed it for these many, many years, hopefully.

"Dinner for Five" is also an interesting show, if you haven't seen it...

Favreau invites four guests to dinner at some swishy California eatery and as they eat improbably ornate dishes, they chat. With cameras rolling. The Andy Dick/Darryl Hannah/Marilyn Manson one was kind of fascinating (one guest couldn't make it that night), although I can't decide if it was a train wreck or not. There was also a brilliant one with Dwight Yoakam and Adam Goldberg firing zingers off at each other the whole night long.

I borrowed a DVD set that had those on it.

I'm still terrified of what The Mandarin is going to be.

You know gyus, in retrospect I can see that my joke about not provoking haus can be seen as a provocation, specially in view of our past "interactions". For that I apologise, but I assure all that it was just a joke and I did not mean it to be taken seriously, as I'm confident Haus understood. Anyway, sorry.

And yes, Favreau was the only flawless thing on Daredevil by far(not even Bullseye was 100% perfect), and his lines "as your attorney on that matter" were the funiest in a movie that failed deeply in its attempts to be fun. Some say the director's cut was much better, but for me, this is urban legend until proven otherwise.

back on topic, Flyboy said he is afraid the most entertaining part of the filme would be the begining, with "evil tony" being better to watch than "good tony". But Tony Stark is a potential addict no matter waht: he only shifts his addiction on alcohol, sex and the spotlight for a new addiction on the adrenaline of wearing a heavily armed battle armor. RDJr is also an actor capable of such a subtle performance as to convey that without shouting it to your face. me, I'm more afraid that the improvised tincan suit may be more fun to watch than the golden-red one.

And I think, that to have Stark turned into a hostage by afghani rebels, though politically iffy, is the most realistic way to go. Where else, after all, would a weapons supplier for the US Army would be having his business nowadays, right? Though I don't expect the movie to give a deep and fair view if the region and its people, I still hope it will skip the bulging-eye, drooling, shouting fanatic maniac characterization usually reserved for "arab terrorists" in American movies.

Favreau, the ball is in your freaking court.

If we're mentioning Daredevil, I maintain steadfastly that the Director's Cut is actually decent, in comparison to the original cinema release. Not spectacular, but a good film nonetheless.

I can see where people are coming from wanting to see Evil Merchant of Death Tony, though. Just because I have the mental image of RDj as Barris in A Scanner Darkly, or the good work he did in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

So, what, almost a year to wait? How much joyful speculation can be packed in from here to then? The wiki states that the Iron Monger's involved as well as having the Mandarin as the main villain; anyone Iron-Man-Savvy enough to flesh out the Iron Monger apart from the slightly paltry wiki?

I'll throw in my two penneth and say I loved the teaser. I've never read Iron Man before but I've seen the Ultimate's Ultimate Tony and read about Barbelith's Iron Man, who seems to be the ultimate gadgeteering lush. Bruce Wayne with none of the angst and all of the substance abuse. And this is what we got here. An alchie in a robot suit who's a smug git, and possibly deservedly so.

Interviewer: So what did you do when you were captured by the [X] army?
Stark: I made a fucking robot suit and SMASHED THEM.

i'd just like to point out to everyone that in one of the panels at the con, the producers and writers of iron man as well as stan lee were all very specific about the fact that tony stark is not an alchoholic in the film, and defended that point by claiming that it was at least a hundred issues into the series before alcholism became a plotline. they suggested it could happen in a later film, perhaps.

That's pretty much Iron Man all over.

In the political breakdowns of superheroes, he gets labeled as a neo-con fairly consistently. This seems A-OK with the Iron Man fans I know.

Thanks for the link, Jack.

Indeed. From the Wiki;

Director Jon Favreau said that the first film's plot would not deal with Tony Stark's personal problems, such as alcoholism. Favreau noted that if there were sequels, Tony Stark's personal problems would be explored. Favreau plans Iron Man to be the first in a trilogy, with all the actors signed on. In particular, Terrence Howard was cast as Jim Rhodes as Favreau felt he could also play War Machine.

Also, let's get that teaser poster in here;

Fans everywhere seem to be in agreement that the teaser footage they looked amazing. Rarely has fandom been so positive about a project. Looks very promising. The lines of dialogue I've heard about sound intelligent, fun, clever & well-written.

I'm happy that Favreau is looking at doing three films, at least conceptually. Hopefully, if it does happen, they'll link into each other quite nicely.

Yeah, because if there's one quality that I'm looking for in a sci-fi action movie about a charismatic arms merchant with a heart of gold who invents a personal suit of armor decked out with supersonic flight engines and repulsor rays to fight a Chinese warlord equipped with two fistfuls of magic rings, it's realism.

I mean, if you can't get a realistic picture of global politics from a children's adventure film, really, where can you go?

SHUT UP DEAD MEGATRON.

This is going to be like the Spiderman 3 thread all over again, isn't it?

Can we just agree that we'll delete every single thread about a comic book movie from now on? I estimate that it'd improve the level of intelligence on display in FTV&T by about... 57.28%. I've got pie charts and scatter graphs as evidence, if anybody wants.

Dead Megatron

NEVER!

Why do some people get angry when someone talks about realistic approach to comic books? Have you ever heard of fantatisc realism? And, hey, "most realistic way to go" and "actually realistic" are two very different things. And I'd never describe tony stark as having a heart of gold, or even being charismatic. In fact, I always thought the character to be a major asshole (he's even a bit of a mutantophobe), but even if I only enjoyed characters who I'd like or agree with in real life, I would not have pick Dead Megatron as screen name, would I? So, let us calm down, ok?

As for the Mandarin, are they really going to use the rings? Because that was lame even in the comics from the 1960s. In fact, I'm not even sure if the guy is going to actually be a Chinese man. Maybe it will be an American competitor (Stane?) desguised as a Chinese warlord to cash in with the war paranoia (nice twist in the end).
