If we could perhaps try to maintain a little decorum? Banning is not the worst thing that could ever happen to a person, but we should take it fairly seriously, if possible.

You saying Elton John isn't serious?

(I was going to try here for the whole "as decorum = 'Appropriate social behavior' and we are society, so define appropriate how we like" thing, but a definitions match with a Haus would be a foolish thing indeed.)

(and you, Flyboy, don't pretend your name isn't too close to 'rocketman' for comfort...)

But anyway. If a serious .t you would like...

Ban.

It is a little bit sad, because Claris said such nice things before about being sorry, taking time out to make sure his arguments hold water, being careful not to say the wrong thing in front of people, etc.

But then he went and did precisely the sort of thing we told him he'd need to stop - he tried to carry on with an offensive and painful argument that had little basis in reality. He did research, this time, but his research was woefully blinkered (comically so, really) and obviously informed by a desire to hold to a point, rather than see if the point has any validity.

As other people have said, i don't think Claris is a Bad Person. I'm sure he is quite nice, quite funny, loves his wife etc. But nice people can say horrid things.

In the past few years, people on Barbelith have become less and less willing to put up with the sort of thing Claris has been saying. They are tired of it. This could be seen as a negative thing, but don't think so. This place counts as 'safe' for a lot of people - it is one of a few places (on the internet or IRL) that they can expect not to be confronted with the kind of crap they have to put up with day-in day-out elsewhere. If, in defending that 'safety', we have to block out a few people, i think that is acceptable. This is not an IRL society - there is no need for a fully inclusive agenda.

I can understand the desire some people have to try to change a person's views; we all want to help. However, we are using a medium which makes such change very difficult. As we work in text, we must rely on the reader to:
a. be willing to read what we write.
b. be willing to 'drop their guard', 'loosen their reality tunnels' - they must want to let whatever they are reading have the opportunity to sink in and change what they think.
c. follow through on any change they find happening to their world view.

Basically, it's wholy up to the reader to read what has been said, absorb it, and process it. If a reader can't be bothered, then it's incredibly easy to change tabs on the browser, go watch a film or whatever.

Having tried at various times and in various places to argue with people who hold bigotted views on the internet, i have realised that it nearly never works. There is a certain effort required to hold false views, which means a person holding them must have some investment in doing so. If they feel the need (caused by pride, fear, etc) to invest in these views, it is unlikely they will change them because of a piece of text on what is one of the most fly-away media.

This isn't to say that it never happens but, as has been said, we aren't paramedics. We have no duty to help people who do not want to change.

I'm not sure that Claris doesn't want to change, but i am sure that the current 'change' is so slight as to make me doubt that he can engage in this place without making people uncomfortable, angry, or just tired.

Maybe in a while, he might have realised something nice, changed in a good way and become a person who can engage in a way that is suitable for this place. That would be lovely, and he should feel free to reapply if this happens.

Basically, what i said in the song.

As for the shit or get off the pot comment; you may or may not be aware, Claris, that Tom is the only person on the board who can actually enact a ban. As he doesn't frequent this place very often, it sometimes takes a while for a ban to take place. Think of it as us waiting for the laxatives to take effect. Sorry if this prolonged wait is causing any distress.

Thank you, .trampetunia. That was comprehensive and informative, and your decision not to try to argue definitions very wise.

Ivor, I'm not sure what you're aiming for currently, but I think it would be a good idea to unpack it a little more, or to pack it up a little more.

Um, not sure if that was a joke, but you do realise Haus DOESN'T actually run the board, right? Tom runs the board, but currently, to all intents and purposes, nobody is flying the plane.

Haus may have a comparatively larger influence over its working that do most others, but that's predicated pretty much on the fact that an awful lot of us have a lot of respect for him- respect which he has EARNED, rather than a position of influence he has been granted, since as far as I'm aware the admin positions no longer exist. (So in that sense I guess the Mafia analogy's not too far off...)

Don Casa don't whack nobody, that's what he has wise guys for. *BLAMMO*
It would be much easier if Haus DID run the board, or we gave Flyboy instant banning powers, or Stoat had his finger on the button, or it was a Mordantocracy or we were under the Tyrant de Logardiere or we enthroned YO! as Warlord or gave the ultimate power to ROFLADY or Boboss or, frankly, anybody who visits the board at least once a week. C'est la vie.

Ivor, could you please try shutting the fuck up and never saying anything on here again unless given permission by someone who has actually got some braincells to rub together, like maybe David Hasslehoff or Lauren Laverne? I'm having a bad morning and don't need it made any worse by having to put up with some tedious little Chief like you.

So really, what's going on?

As far as i can tell, Tom has been PMd and emailed to be asked to ban Claris. Tom has been making posts in other parts of the board, but has not yet banned Claris. Is this correct?

Has Tom replied to anybodies PMs or emails?

It would seem from lack of posting that Claris has taken a step away from the 'lith, which is nice, but doesn't take away the fact that this thread is currently a bit of a joke.

If Tom is the only person able to enact a ban but is unwilling to do so, what do we do?

I assume that if Claris had chosen to skit around the board posting offensive crap, mods would have been able to delete these posts. But without any cap on the process, how long would they put up with just cleaning up the crap?

This hasn't happened, and it's probably not greatly useful to get excited about a hypothetical situation, but at the moment we're left a little open if our banhammer has no ban left.

And Haus, if that comment was aimed at me, i'm sorry if it feels i am persecuting you. I have no desire to 'set myself in opposition' to you and i apologise if it seems i have been doing so.

I'm a leeeeeeetle bit concerned about the lack of response from Tom, if he feels that the case/vote for kicking Claris is not made, fair enough, but I would like some acknowledgement of that fact.

Can we have a show of hands for those who have tried to contact him about this thread? I PMed him a day or two after it started.

Well, I mostly sit around looking faintly embarassed and sighing about the broken functionality of the board, as usual. God forbid we get an actual old school troll attack.

Hello? Tom?

Lump it? While CD's penance is nowhere near complete, have his attempts at apologising not swayed anyone? If he's trying, and hasn't been a worse case scenario, then can't he be helped to sort it out and become a productive member? Is that not a more positive step than banning someone?

We are aware that Tom checked into the Dr Who thread.

Is he scared of this forum?

He just doesn't seem to be having anything to do with the place beyond acting as a regular poster.

Oh, and Mathlete: no. CD needs to go, if only because his continued presence here puts other, far more valuable members of the community off from posting. If it's a choice between him and them, it's no choice.

Read the thread, Mathlete, and you will find the answer to that question appearing as if by magic in front of your eyes.

No response from Tom - he may have banned him and just not thought to mention it, which I think has happened before. It's not ideal practice, either way.

No, it's entirely his own responsibility to work out why making constant broad discriminatory statements is foolish. Who has time to help someone kitten-step contribute to an Internet message board? He wasn't trying, all he had to do was self-edit and he failed miserably over and over again in this thread.

Would anyone disagree with the analogy that Tom's relationship with Barbelith is now much like that of a super who occasionally pops down to the basement to do his laundry - but if he runs into any of the other tennants, and they ask him about the holes in the roof or the leaky pipes, he puts his hands over his ears and sings "lalalalala not listening"?

petunia
13:20 / 02.07.07
I like the analogy, perhaps because it reminds me of the lovable super in Friends. All we need is somebody willing to be Tom's dancing partner.

In reality, though, is there anything anybody can do? Is there literally no way for anybody other than Tom to enact this kind of choice? Is there nobody who can contact him in a less-easily-ignored medium (Phone, face-to-face etc.)?

So if Tom refused a ban, what would be the next course of action? Has this ever happened before?

ONLY NICE THINGS
14:25 / 02.07.07
Tom hasn't refused a ban, Mathlete. Tom hasn't done anything yet, or if he has done something has not mentioned it. If he does refuse a ban, then I imagine moderator conscience would have to come into play, although I very much doubt it would be an issue - the overwhelming majority of opinions expressed were for a ban, so for Tom to refuse to do it would be, in effect, the first move in closing the place down.

I'll nudge at some point. CD appears either to have been banned or to have left, anyway, so it's not currently pressing, but it is a bit of a worry in terms of shows of board vulnerability.
