Thanks for clearing that one up, CD, and thank you for your good humour in this somewhat awkward time.

Thanks for clearing that up Haus. I was asking more out of interest then actually thinking that Tom wouldn't.

Gah. Sorry everyone. The main reason that I haven't banned Claris is because I felt I needed to read through the whole thread in context and figure out what the state of play was. I've had a couple of e-mails pointing me to the thread, but only a couple, and with the Hack Day and the last couple of weeks working in the US I sort of thought it was probably under control. I can see now that this wasn't the case.

Having read much of the stuff that has been said on both sides here, it seems to me that Claris should be banned, and so I'm going to ban him. As ever, these situations always make me sad. They seem like they should be avoidable.

I'm really sorry about my absence in and around these issues. Given the current state of things, I'm comfortable with the idea that in these situations you guys should be able to determine whether someone should be banned without my presence and simply ask me to do the job—much like with the registration process. If you guys can work out between you who should pass those messages onto me, then I'd be okay with that.

Well, they are avoidable, Tom. Many of them are avoided by screening out some people at the applications stage, and others by dialogue, communication, sharing of sources... I thought, round about page eight, that CD was going to pull this one out of the fire, myself. However, the one thing he apparently couldn't retract, and fought for the hardest, was the one thing that was really going to cause problems. However, there was an impressive degree of harmony about the discussion, which was good to see.

Anyway. I'm OK with volunteering to advance banning decisions. If Randy is prepared to take it on, he'd be a good choice, I think. We should hack out minimum standards, in terms of confirmation and timescales, but I think they are pretty much emerging from these encounters.

I'd certainly trust Haus and Randy. Neither of them tend to leap to conclusions, and recently Haus has been more often than not on the "not ban" side (despite his reputation) and Randy on t'other, though neither of them "extremely" so, if that makes any sense...

...and they're both usually willing to take opposing opinions on board, which is probably the most important consideration.

Simply a matter of figuring out when one of these discussions has run its course and what the general mood is, then passing on the ban request if that's the way that things have swung, yes? Sure, I can help with that.
