Other recent one I haven't seen mentioned here was Big Barda. I can't really tell if it's anything there. But this big mama-fudging goddess of kicking cosmic ass and all it entails, found dead in the kitchen floor so her husband'll have motivation.

Please tell me this hasn't happened.

The Barda recently making appearances in Birds of Prey picking bullets out of her hid with one of Huntress' arrows, all blissful-like? The Big Barda? Gives general impression she could outlive everybody, even if they all decided to try and take her out at once? Has mega-rod, will damage? Man, that sucks about on par with the Byrne porno story.

Unless it's actually good, I guess. Which, it might be, depending on execution.

But, really?

That's why I put the quotes on "shot". It seems like a shot, but could be some cosmic bullet-like beam thingy. But it's her, death off camera, dead on the kitchen floor, with grocery bags on the floor, and the page keeps on going on Mr Miracle in many panels while the caption goes on about his grief and him going crazy or something. So we can dwell on how Mr Miracle loved her and how he'll miss her, and how he is in pain and noble etc etc. I figure she could return stronger or something - yeah, probably, even if it's not this writer's intention, the New Gods will come back in endless resurrections, if 7S taught us anything. But it appears this is trying to be universe shattering, big and relevant. So, her death might be just that (or we'll get a epic flashback, I don't know).

(scan from Occasional Superheroine)
(edited pictures out 'cause I thought I shouldn't occupy too much space in the thread with such images)

I feel I should include this one as well. Another one that caught the blogdom's attention is a brief page almost rehashing the Heroes for Hire's cover (but without teh tentacle sex and white ooze on exposed breasts).

(again from O.S.):

(again from O.S.)

Apparently the next panel is the villain saying something of a meta-comment on the unecessary cheesecake. Seems like they're just flat out trying to sink themselves to death, no?

Something Positive could hardly be said to be unproblematic in the way it handles violence, women, and violent women, but this strip was a balm for my soul.

If she met you, she'd like you, I'm sure. But which 'she'? Who knows? Who cares?

If 'Big Barda' gives 'general impression' about anything isn't this because she, like the rest of the New Gods, is basically just a blank slate?

I'll go on record as saying that anyone who minds very much about what happens to Big Barda, or Orion, or Metron, or any of the guys, should perhaps look into the benefits (often under-discussed - the focus has been on the negative in the past, but if it was that bad, why would anyone do it?) of auto-erotic strangulation.

Look, I've been trying to back off and be a bit nicer to you, Granny, but what the fuck. You don't actually believe any of what you just wrote, do you?

This is spurious. There's no possible confusion in the above sentence as to who "she" refers to.

If 'Big Barda' gives 'general impression' about anything isn't this because she, like the rest of the New Gods, is basically just a blank slate?

Again: what the fuck, dude. How does giving the general impression of something mean that a character has no depths? For example, I am sure that you are a rich and complex individual with a fascinating personality full of wonderful quirks that brighten the lives of all who meet you, but currently you are giving the general impression of being a bored windup-merchant.

"Your favourite band sucks," in other words. This thread is for the discussion of misogyny in comics. If you think that the New Gods are shit and their fans should all hang themselves, the place to say so, if any, would be a thread on the New Gods. What are you actually trying to convey here--that misogyny is irrelevent in the context of poor characterisation? What the fuck. Seriously.

I'm struggling to join up the dots on what you're saying full stop, Granny. People shouldn't complain about potential misogyny as far as BB is concerned because she's basically a non-entity, and that to read that as a product of misogynistic impulse is flawed because it is in fact a symptom of greater affliction that plagues the entire pantheon of New Gods? Is that right? Something like that?

At best that sounds like an enormous generalisation. A lot of writers have tackled Barda - in fact I'd suggest that she's been given considerably more room to breathe than the rest of the NGs put together - and while I can't think of specific example right now, I seem to remember Barba striking me as substantially three-dimensional from time to time.

I have further criticisms but Strangers seems to have them under control.

You'd only think the New Gods characters had no depth if you haven't read the actual Fourth World stuff from Kirby. He might not be a master of characterization, but there's a lot of emotion and care behind those characters. Barda gets a lot of development during her time in Mister Miracle, as do Metron and others. You don't necessarily see that depth in all her appearances, but there's a lot of power in the archetypes Kirby tapped into with that series, and it'd be nice to see his characters taken care of on their journey into the future.

I was just trying to get a debate going, hopefully.

In that I have apparently both succeeded, and failed. I was attempting to make a weak, no doubt, joke about the New Gods; I guess I didn't understand how much they're still loved.

I am sorry. I am beneath a pig.

I know it's a bit old, but oh! the things you find when you look:

Is Isis Ruined

"I mean now that she was sexually assaulted numerous times by Felix Faust. How is that going to affect her psyche. Much less her attitude toward Black Adam & men in general."

"I don't know, you'd have to be a total saint to ignore what Faust did to her."

For those who read the comics in question, was the story pandering to this audience and overshooting, or are the fanboy's just being disgusting?

None of the actual rapage is shown, but we see Faust dressing afterwards, and it's implied that he's been raping a paralyzed Isis for, well, months--since the end of the last Black Adam mini, in fact. And then, naturally, she takes her revenge by tearing his genitals off.

Pandering? Well, it did seem like the creators took care not to pornify it like the Sue Dibny scene, so that's a plus. OTOH, it came off as a fairly pointless Kick The Dog moment. Isis was already turned into a refugee, enslaved, mortally wounded once or twice, dropped in front of her brother's half-devoured corpse, and finally killed via horrible diseases, at which time she renounced her hippieness and told Adam to go forth and be vengeful.

Did she really need to reenact Foxy Brown on top of that? I guess so, since apparently she has to become a world-cleansing supervillain now, but it seems like kind of a waste.

On this topic, is it just me or is there a continuing "Women in Refridgerators" vibe in Jeph Loeb's contributions to the Ultimate Universe.

Hawkeye's wife and kids (killed at the end of Millar's Ultimates run) are being used as the spur to make Ult.Hawkeye "edgy" in that mid-90's bad way.

Ult.Scarlet Witch shot.

Ult.Valkarie drowned. Then commences Thor's "heroic and manly" journey to free her dead soul. I wonder if he'll do the same for...

Ult.Wasp, being eaten by Ult.Blob.

One wonders if it's just Loeb or if the other Ult.books are any better (Ult.FF is the only other one I read and that at least has Sue Storm as an intelligent and independant person, even if she is being kidnapped or coma-tised every five seconds).
