That armour looks helluva Sontaran. I can't see the other photo for some reason.

Sontarans would be a good one to bring back. I like the idea of endless streams of clones pouring out of massive troop carriers. Perhaps get a little Rutan Host action going as well.

I'd quite like the Zygons to come back though because they genuinely freaked me out as a kiddie. I'd never seen Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the thought of these creatures that kept you alive in their horrible organic spaceship to impersonate you gave me the screaming heebie-jeebies.

Sure they look a little silly in hindsight, but silly and deadly can be quite a good combination (that said I was amongst the few people who thought the Slitheen looked pretty badass charging about 10 Downing Street).

I still come around to asking why it is that Farscape never had any trouble representing alien planets but Doctor Who can't. You can do a bar on another world, surely? You can stay indoors apart from the odd exterior CGI shot. No one would mind. It's fine!

I think the difference with English sci-fi is that we've had forty years of people moaning about how crap the planets look. Even Star Trek never used to get that, afaik, and some of them were rubbish. This has probably damaged people's confidence a little.

Apart from anything else, it wouldn't be that expensive to fly 'em out to Iceland, and if anywhere looks like a ready-made alien world, it's that place.

I think we can safely agree that sci-fi of a certain era--US or UK--looked rubbish, regardless.

And now that we have technology, I think we should continue going about changing that.

Episode 1 of season 3 has its title confirmed as "Smith and Jones." More than likely referring to the name that the Doctor adopts when hanging about with people that insists he give a full name, however, there are fans who are speculating that it could indicate an appearance for Sarah Jane. Hopefully not, as having her appear in another episode of Doctor Who, especially when it's the debut of a new companion (obviously the Jones of the title) would be insanely stupid.

I think it's a fairly strong title and gives an indication of the sort of relationship that the Doctor and Martha will have. It makes them sound like a proper duo, like the Avengers and could mean that the companion will be more equal in the relationship than Rose was. I'm not saying that Rose was unequal in their relationship, however, she could be in awe of the Doctor at times.

Anyway, one episode title down..12 to go.

Not that this is much of a surprise, as they have a three year contract with the Terry Nation estate to use them, but the Daleks are going to return (*insert best attempt at shocked face here*) in Helen Raynor's two-parter set in 1930s New York (pronounced Cardiff).

Pictures and the like were posted all over Outpost Gallifrey's forums earlier today, but I didn't manage to grab one before they were deleted by moderators under the instruction of a mildly peeved Auntie Beeb.

If people are getting peeved by my constant revealing of potential plot details, then just tell me to shut up, buuut..

While browsing the Forbidden Planet merchandise website earlier today, one could see a list of products going on sale in mid 2007, to coincide with season 3. Among the Judoon voice changer helmets, Judoon commander action figures and redesigned cybermen was a peculiar item called Art Deco Dalek.

Combining this with pictures that have been all over the net of a hooverville set for the New York episodes and it seems that we're all lined up for art deco Daleks filleting and harvesting the poverty stricken citizens of a depression era New York. Joy!

I'm hoping that Dalek Sec has given up on space fascism and has become an Edward G Robinson-esque gangster.

I think I just piddled a little with excitement.

At the idea of seeing a Deco Dalek.

No one take offence, but are we sure those are Daleks and not extras from a burlesque review? A very very bizarre burlesque review?

According to this month's DWM, episode two will be called (*cringe*): "The Shakespeare Code," which just brings to mind the title of the book and movie that everyone (except me) has seen and read. I really hope that it's a tentative title and that it will change before broadcast.

You guys are aware that their is a short 3-4 min clip from the christmas invasion on You Tube at the moment, right?

It looks to have been taken by a cam corder at some fan convention.

It shows the doctor attempting to rescue the runaway bride in what is, to my mind, the first car chase the tardis has been involved in...

Irrelevent to the topic really but might be of interest to some of you nice people. The next issue of Doctor Who Magazine, on sale start of January begins a three part comic strip that sees the return of ace creative team Alan Barnes, Martin Geraghty, and the Brigadier. I for one am a big old fanboy and can't wait.

Unfortunately Doctor Who Magazine is next to impossible to find around where I live. It either sells out extraordinarly fast, or they get an inordinately small amount of copies. According to a Liz Sladen interview this morning on some breakfast show, the reason that K9 won't be appearing in every episode of SJA, is because he still serves a purpose for the Doctor on Earth.

I've seen the Youtube video when it first landed on the net. I was afraid of publishing the link here, because it's ostensibly illegal, I suppose. As far as I know, it was filmed at the Doctor Who concert that happened towards the end of November. Incidentally, highlights of this concert will be shown on Christmas Day during a new episode of Doctor Who confidential called "Music and Monsters." Interestingly enough, the youtube clip has received coverage on the children's news show "Newsround." I'm figuring that it's probably some sort of viral advertising, considering that the Beeb haven't removed the video and that it receives coverage on their flagship children's current affairs show.

Y'know, I clicked on one of those Wikipedia links from earlier in the thread, then got lost in the maze of following all the obscure, occult continuity from the books and audio adventures, and came to the conclusion that I'd much sooner have more of that than anything that the series has presented since being revived.

And then you read the comment from RTD about how the alien world stories aren't prime time television material, they're subscription television material, and you wonder what the point of it all is, besides creating a weapon for use in ratings wars.

Looking up Doctor Who on Wikipedia is dangerous. I've spent many an hour going from one to another when I realise I'd forgotten what I was originally looking for.

So glad they've come up for an in-story reason for the lack of K-9 and equally glad that Bob Baker allowed a cameo for the not really a pilot episode. Best of both worlds.

The BBC owns K9's physical likeness but Baker (and Martin) own the other bits. AIUI they could use that tin dog prop in every single episode provided they just had everyone call him Fido or similar. Likewise the Jettix series has access to the name and concept but must redesign K9 as Baker doesn't own the likeness. The compromise is a nice solution (although I can't imagine why kids would tune in for episodes without K9) but not really a legal hurdle.

I got confused because Billy Piper appears in the same preview sequence for BBC's Christmas shows, cleverly cut in right after Tennant. I am easily confused of course. She is appearing in "Ruby in the..." the "Smoke" I think? The adaptation of Ph. Pullman kiddy Victorian detective novella.

Runaway Bride discussion in here, or its own thread then?

I really really enjoyed this episode for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's the only new Who we've had for months so it was good to get a bit of a fix and the extra 15 minutes really helped flesh it out. Usually I'm not Catherine Tate's biggest fan, but she was... inoffensive in this, certainly, even good in parts.

It was a fun romp, and there was enough there to satisfy old fans as well as newcomers watching the show for the first time. The explanations to Donna of what he was about was one of the best bits, I think. I love all that fish-out-of-water comedy anyhow, and it was fun because this time we're in on the joke, unlike with Rose's introduction where the viewers were being teased with the Doc and his wonderful machines. Here we know how it works and we're enjoying seeing a new character try and fit the concepts into her head in a short space of time.

And while point-to-point logic is hardly Who's strongsuit, there were a few headscratchers in the episode. How do you go about becoming the consort for a spider-empress for a start? Especially if she's been hiding out on the edge of the universe. Long distance calling? Although, as a nice bonus it's good to see that Torchwood London a) still exists and b) are just as incompetent and myopic as their Welsh counterparts. How do all those people go missing without any trace? Were they making those gloobedoop particles for another reason, or purely for the use of the Spider-queen? That's an awful lot of resources devoted to work that I doubt the higher-ups were knowledgeable about. I really really want Torchwood's overall arc to be about the fact that they're all a bunch of bodgers, it just makes so much sense.

Back to Who though, my absolute favourite bit of the episode was right at the end though. Was I imagining the slight tears and crack in the Doctor's voice as he says "Her name was Rose."? Made me cry manly tears, it did.

So yeah, roll on season three!
