Runaway Bride discussion in here, or its own thread then?
I really really enjoyed this episode for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's the only new Who we've had for months so it was good to get a bit of a fix and the extra 15 minutes really helped flesh it out. Usually I'm not Catherine Tate's biggest fan, but she was... inoffensive in this, certainly, even good in parts.
It was a fun romp, and there was enough there to satisfy old fans as well as newcomers watching the show for the first time. The explanations to Donna of what he was about was one of the best bits, I think. I love all that fish-out-of-water comedy anyhow, and it was fun because this time we're in on the joke, unlike with Rose's introduction where the viewers were being teased with the Doc and his wonderful machines. Here we know how it works and we're enjoying seeing a new character try and fit the concepts into her head in a short space of time.
And while point-to-point logic is hardly Who's strongsuit, there were a few headscratchers in the episode. How do you go about becoming the consort for a spider-empress for a start? Especially if she's been hiding out on the edge of the universe. Long distance calling? Although, as a nice bonus it's good to see that Torchwood London a) still exists and b) are just as incompetent and myopic as their Welsh counterparts. How do all those people go missing without any trace? Were they making those gloobedoop particles for another reason, or purely for the use of the Spider-queen? That's an awful lot of resources devoted to work that I doubt the higher-ups were knowledgeable about. I really really want Torchwood's overall arc to be about the fact that they're all a bunch of bodgers, it just makes so much sense.
Back to Who though, my absolute favourite bit of the episode was right at the end though. Was I imagining the slight tears and crack in the Doctor's voice as he says "Her name was Rose."? Made me cry manly tears, it did.
So yeah, roll on season three! |
