I don't really agree that there's nothing you can say about emotional story arcs

I'm not sure anyone said "there's nothing you can say about emotional story arcs", did they? It's certainly not the point I was making: I made the point that discussing specific details and acknowledging the importance of a general emotional thrust are not mutually exclusive; whether the two are (or should be) balanced on Barbelith is another question, really.

It occurs to me that DW is getting treated by us a lot better than TW. It's not a bad thing, to me it just shows how bad TW is. But we complain about the Cyberwoman episode, yet here we have a spider-thing that's built a tunnel to the centre of the earth, unnoticed, which is then flooded by The Thames, with no ill-effects. Next to that, fighting a woman with a pterodactyl is small potatoes. But DW pulls off the ridiculous conceit in a way TW could never dream of.

Finally got round to watching this and just want to add to the big chorus of Yay!

The Rachnos, yeah I can appreciatethe whole 'too much make-up', but it was great to see a really alien-looking alien.

The car chase was a mountain of beautful excess and kind of succeed in the all the ways that the car chase in Matrix 2 failed. It gripped the imagination in the way that only something that we haven't seen in over 40 years of Dr Who can.

I would've liked to have seen an exterior shot of the Tardis with its doors open to really sell the spectacle of the whole thing to a greater level. It wasn't necessary, and would have cost more, but it would have looked so good and such things are now achievable.

And the trio of trailers at the end further added to my enjoyment - I want to see it all NOW. Hell, the trailers even sold me on the Torchwood season finale.

Yeah, I'd agree that Dr Who tends to get more leeway than Torchwood, but in many ways, it has kind of earned it. It has built up a reservoir of good will over its considerable history and its 16 years of absence followed by such a rapturous return have kind of robbed its detractors of much ammunition. And there is also the fact that Dr Who has always been family entertainment. Torchwood doesn't really have the benefit of any of these things, and its arguable mis-selling as adult, as opposed to adolescent, drama, over and above its various narrative, problems has only served to work against it...

Watched it twice (and if I get to a freeview box in the next few days who knows I may watch it again) and loved it. Yes Tate annoyed me to begin with (her bride reminding me of her drunk bride sketch from her first series, correct me if I'm wrong {about which series}) but I warmed to her over the hour and it was nice to see someone not in wide-eyed awe of the Doctor as Rose was when they first met.

The empress was odd. My parents swear they had seen similar before and the over all agreement in our house was the mother of all monsters from Hercules (I forget her name) with a hint of the baddie/devil from Legend. But there was a child-like whoop of joy when the Doctor mentioned Galifrey just before pressing the button.

Oh and the lift scene:
"Honour and obey"
"Tell me about it"
"OI"

From this month's Doctor Who Magazine, which subscribers have apparently already received, we get four new episode titles for Season 3.

Episode 4 will be called either "Daleks in Manhattan" or "City of Daleks." The episode starring Mark Gatiss will be called "The Lazarus Experiment." One of Paul Cornell's episodes from his two parter, speculated to be an adaption of his New Adventures novel Human Nature, will be called "The Family of Blood." Finally, the RTD penned Doctor-lite episode is called "Utopia."

G'night!

There are more rumours surrounding episode titles. This year's New Earth episode is reported to be called "Flesh and Bone." The second part of the Dalek two-parter will be called "The Oncoming Storm," and rather unimaginatively, the first part of Paul Cornell's adaptation of Human Nature will be called.."Human Nature."

Well, I'm saying it now through I did have issues with "The Idiot's Lantern."

Another episode title from an advance copy of DWM. Chris Chibnall, whose writing we've all loved and cherished on Torchwood, has an episode coming up in season 3 of Doctor Who.

The episode will be titled "42."

Also appearing in the same episode: William Ash as Riley,Anthony Flanagan as Scannell, Matthew Chambers as Korwin, Vinette Robinson as Lerner, Gary Powell as Ashton, Rebecca Oldfield as Erina.

Sounds like a rather large and unwieldy cast, but larger casts have worked in the show previously, most notably in the Satan Pit duology. I'm not overly confident in Chibnall's ability to create a good episode of Doctor Who, especially one which appears to have Douglas Adamsish leanings.

It could be a revelation though, with Chibnall's script for Who showing a sense of humour and dramatic flair that was often lacking in his Torchwood episodes.

It would be in everyone best interests if they just got James Strong in full time.

Who (oh ho) you ask?

The dude who directed The Impossible Planet, The Satan Pit and They Keep Killing Suzie (from Torchwood) basically my three fave Whoniverse episodes of all time.

Get! Him!

That hasn't been confirmed yet, however. That, Flesh and Bones and the title Human Nature. They were reported on Freema Agyeman's website and although they have been correct with other titles so far, they're tentative still.

42 is confirmed however, and I have some details about the episode. As I've said already, it's written by Chris Chibnall and as far as I'm aware is shooting currently with Graeme Harper. The episode will take place in real time, like an episode of 24, centring around an event that takes place in 42 minutes (duh).

And this after the talk over in the Life of Mars thread that we'd (jokingly) have a Who/LoM crossover.

Paragraph below contains a lot of spoilers/speculation, so if you want to watch the series totally fresh, then avoid. I suppose one of us will open a season 3 spoiler-free episode by episode thread as the launch date approaches. It's being mooted that the new season will start March 24th this year. In other Who-ish news, no new Torchwood until early 2008. Good news I suppose, as it might indicate an increase in script quality.

The Simm rumour (apparently true now, so hurray for Life on Mars fans!) has been around for a bit, when his casting was reported last month. The Sun reported that he would only be appearing during the closing moments of the season finalé, so it's suspected that Saxon (presumably a Time-Lord) will be regenerating at the end of season 3. He's also being connected to a character called The Professor, another Time-Lord character, according to the Sun(which some fans seem to think will be a future Valeyard-esque version of the Doctor, due to the name connection. Ace used to call the Doctor "professor.").

As always, pinch of salt and all that.

For those of us who've not watched LoM, what's the lowdown on this fella? Will he make a good Master?

I'll be more exited when it's confirmed (I got my hopes all built up then dashed on the rocks of despair after the David Jason as The Master rumours pre-Season 2).

Possifly. Remember, though, that it seems hijacking the Doctor's superbiology (parallel to Torchwood scavenging alien tech in Season 2) will be a plot point in Season 3. Saxon might just be full of the Doctor's juice if he does regenerate.

Above post was posted in error, there was actual content to go with the joke, and here it is:

How I suspect the season to pan out, is that the Doctor eventually encounters Saxon. Saxon is, as we know, the word-arc of this season, so he'll doubtlessly be involved in the finalé somehow. He'll probably be the main foe, and with the reintroduction of "Gallifrey," Time-Lord technology in the form of the genesis Ark and the fact Simm is confirmed as the Master (he could still end up being Saxon, considering that nobody has been cast as him yet). Anyway, Saxon and the Doctor have their show down or whatever in the penultimate episode, leaving plenty of time for them to put their differences aside to fight off the Daleks in the finalé.

Because the Daleks will be in the finalé. Naturally.

Hmmmm, John Simm as the Master. A choice I find both fantastically surprising, and surprisingly fantastic. I'm surprised that they are going for someone in his mid-thirties, who looks even younger for the part, but Simm's a superb actor and should be utterly wonderful none the less. One of the most lovely pieces of left-field casting I've heard of in some time. I'm suddenly very, very excited about the new series.

15:25 / 21.02.07
A start date hasn't been confirmed yet, but the previous two seasons started on Easter week-end. That would make season 3 an April 7th launch.

However, there's a lot of evidence to hint towards a mid-March launch too. The next issue of DWM (March 1st) has a full "Smith and Jones" preview. If, it were an April launch, people seem to think that the "Smith and Jones" preview would be in the March 31st edition of the magazine.

Also, David Tennant has stated that it'll probably be a March launch date in an interview with a recent magazine (TV Times, or something like that).

Either way, it's starting fairly soon. They're currently filming the last episode.
