I have a friend in Cardiff and he says security around filming is tighter than Scrooge McDuck (I was going to go with a dirtier metaphor, but I thought I better not lower the tone).

I omitted one detail about "The Ice World." On the same topic, there was also a brief episode description going with it.

The Ice World: "Something is on its way from Mars - and it's heading straight for Earth. Meanwhile, the Doctor makes a new friend..."

So, it might be Ice Warriors (despite RTD's recent denial. But then, he did deny Daleks would be appearing last year). Eager fans posit that it might be Zygons, or even Sutekh. I really don't see Sutekh as a possibility, after all, they basically did Sutekh last year with The Beast (they even got the same voice actor). Zygons might be a possibility, if they're redesigned to look less..stupid.

You suppose security's so tight because they want to limit spoilerific things?

Man, I would love to try and snoop around.

The rumour that the Time Lords are to return this season have been floating about for ages. Everybody seems to assume that it will be the Master or the Rani to return. Fans on OG, however, seem to believe that it will be Iris Wildthyme who also survived the Time War.

The story goes, when Katy Manning (who portrayed Jo Grant in the classic serial and portrays Iris Wildthyme in the Big Finish audio plays) was recently asked if she was enjoying the new series she hinted that she would be making a return in season 3, but not as Jo Grant. Fans are taking this to mean that she will be playing Wildthyme, a Time Lady who travels in a Tardis shaped like a London Bus and is slightly smaller on the inside and whose companions are normally attractive homosexual men. Of course, she could just be playing a totally new character, but Wildthyme sounds like a lot of fun. As with all of these rumours though, time will tell.

Note to self: get more attractive homosexual men to pal around with me.

I've always assumed at some point the Master was going to make an appearance in the new series. For a while there, I thought Davros would, too. I'm not so much with the seeing that happen.

Does Barbelith have any agents in Cardiff? Any that could go snooping round and see the Blue Box and the Blue Suit?

Axolotl's friend would seem to be right about the security considerations taken by BBC Wales, so I think I'll leave that up to the professional snoopers at Outpost Gallifrey &c.

However, a few days ago I did see the new companion (shall we call her by name for respectful purposes? Nahh, not just yet, eh?) being dropped off in a shiny, tinted-windows car at Cardiff Central train station, looking tres recently-off-duty-actressy in jeans, jumper and a ton of make-up. And very pretty she is too.

Those BBC bastards. ;p

I know that I wouldn't find Tennant half as attractive if he weren't wearing the suit. My precious precious suit.

They've been filming the episode featuring Shakespeare in Coventry over the past few days and there were a few great set reports posted on the OG forums today. They haven't been posted to the main site yet, so I'll post the most interesting bits and pieces of what I've learned so far.

The episode seems to take up the position that "Tooth and Claw" did last year. The people on location in Coventry got pretty close and were able to hear some lines that hint that this is the first time that she's travelled in the TARDIS:

"Next they rehearsed and recorded a scene where the two emerge from the timber-framed building as the Doctor tries to explain time-travel to Martha in terms she will recognise, by comparing the experience she’s undergone to “Back To The Future”. “The film?” asks Martha. “No- the novelisation!” says the Doctor at his most sarcastic. It is clearly Martha’s first trip in the TARDIS."

In another location:

DT and FA then rehearsed and recorded a scene where they run into the TARDIS, pursued by soldiers carrying long pikes (spears). There were many takes of this filmed in daylight and the TARDIS windows were illuminated. One take was aborted when DT had trouble opening the TARDIS door and he improvised a funny alternate line- something like “****- if I could get the door open!”. This was greeted with a huge laugh from the watching crowd.

Much of the set reports are the same stuff regurgitated, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Now, if they made him an update of the Meddling Monk, that might be cool. "Now Father Meddler, this TARDIS is small, that one is far away"
Not that this will happen.
I was also about to say if they were going to borrow anyone from Sorted is should have been wee neddie Rab from The Book Group but just remembered they already did. Yay!

Doctor Who staying earthbound for next series, apparently alien worlds suck. Still, you can't argue with the figures, It's just depressing that The Satan Pit somehow got lower viewer numbers than say Fear Her.

Two spin-off series, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, are currently in production. The Sarah-Jane Adventures? Anyone heard more about this? Were they planning to do this as well as Rose Tyler Saves The World?

Are you ready for blasphemy?

(takes deep breath)

I loved The Impossible Planet. I liked The Satan Pit less. And I know why. The use of the TARDIS as deus ex machina. (Really fucking irritated me.)

But I did hate Fear Her.

Surely this past season saw more alien worlds than the first season, yeah?

Sarah Jane adventures is currently in production for CBBC, so I'm assuming it'll be similar to some of RTD's other child-friendly productions. I haven't seen any of his children's drama, but I've heard that a lot of it is fantastic, so I have moderate hopes for SJ Adventures.

In this month's DWM and on the OG forums, there are rumours that the show will feature Sarah Jane and her 13 year old neighbour solving alien-related mysteries. Who they cast as the thirteen year old neighbour will be vital. You don't want somebody so good that they upstage Sarah Jane and you don't want an actor that will reek so badly that they'll make Liz Sladen look like Hilary Swank.

And in retrospect..

Hilary Swank?! What an odd choice.

bollocks to viewing figures - viewing figures are't representative of much outside of who was in on the days in question - damn lies and all that. out of those that watched the season impossible planet and satan pit ranked amongst the highest while fear her and love & monsters have been almost universally derrided. But Fear Her was on during the world cup and that helped the ratings there...

Love & Monsters wasn't too bad. Dragged on a bit though....

Mister Six, whom all the girls

Dunno why he's in a tiff over getting mocked over using quarries to represent alien planets.

He DID use locations that could easily be confused with any other Earthbound story in Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel... unless you looked up to see the airships that served no purpose. What's the point of an alternate Earth unless it's different?

The show is limited by imagination, not by the budget. I'd rather see stories not centered on the 'emotional journey' of the companion or visits with their family instead of visits to 'Planet Zog' which is surely not a matter of money.

Besides, the new series has largely been Earthbound anyway.

How is this 'news'?

I'm listening to one of the new BBC audiobooks, David Tennant reading 'The Feast of the Drowned'. He does the narration in his natural voice, but his impressions of Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith are so funny.

Tom Baker will always be my favourite Doctor. I still can’t decide who my favourite between Ecclestone and Tennant is though. At the moment I think Ecclestone but I keep changing my mind.

Although with that new suit (Damn, he looks cool) I could soon be back in the Tennant camp.

Oh, Eccleston's loads better.

They've starting airing series two and it's fun to watch the reactions of people who haven't seen it yet.

Considering that Outpost Gallifrey will no longer be updating its news page, I figure I may as well post some spoilery images from its forum.

Here's a photograph taken on-set of something that I figured was a Sontaran:

However, when it takes its mask off, this chap is revealed beneath.

The people on the OG forum are speculating that they're the Judoon and will possibly be appearing in the first episode of season 3. I don't see why they can't be the re-invented version of Sontarans, though.

Because Shaun Lyons, the site's editor has stated that it's taking him a ridiculous amount of time to cull the information from elsewhere, his own boards and so on. He recently asked for co-editors, but apparently didn't get many replies, or he did and the replies weren't too hectic.

I still come around to asking why it is that Farscape never had any trouble representing alien planets but Doctor Who can't. You can do a bar on another world, surely? You can stay indoors apart from the odd exterior CGI shot. No one would mind. It's fine!

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

I'm with you, Tom.

I think season one did an excellent job of alien interiors (ex.The Long Game).
