Julia Kristeva! Hristo Stoichkov! Magdalena Maleeva! Your boys took a HELL of a beating.

John, I agree that the World Cup does tend to bring out the beer lobster in even the most mild-mannered fan, but I want to be clear that at no point did I think you were indirectly slagging off my mates. I just thought that you and others were putting football fans into a rather odd category.

I have nostalgic memories of the 2002 World Cup because that's when I moved to London. I still fondly recall buskers singing "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" at Waterloo station and thinking how exciting and "Euro" it all was.

I expect some of the novelty will wear off this time round.

In order to preserve the original thread title, a work of some genius if rather negative:

'I'd rather bob in hard on a dead dog's chopper than deal with any of this.'

I like the new title, very inspired!

And let´s start predicting the winner: I´ll be vague and say a south american country will win.

You blasphemers!!! IHow can one not love the World Cup? ( I guess not winning - or participating - may be an issue, but c'mon!) I'll PM Tom and request you all get banned on grounds of anti-world cupism.

Except for Boboss, of course

You know, in an odd way, this reminds me of the Wrestlecrap forum, which is not a good thing for Barbelith to be compared to, but... Y'see, a running theme on that forum is the hatred of the current WWE champion, John Cena, to the extent that people feel motivated to start threads (many threads...many, many threads...often by people who can't spell and have malfunctioning 'humour' neurons) devoted entirely to slagging him off. Which never works because, inevitably, some fule who doesn't understand the thread title will come in and start defending the fucker, and the. Interminable. Arguments. Will. Start. All. Over. Again.

And, hey, look - a Barbelith thread devoted to slagging off the World Cup is started! And what happens? That's right - people on Barbelith don't take the time to consider the thread title, and the point of the thread, and start coming in and defending the world cup! In a thread dedicated to being a refuge where World Cup Curmudgeons can come and slag it off!

FWIW I have no strong opinions on footy either way, aside from finding it boring, but I would imagine it only strengthens the case of the aforementioned Cup Curmudgeons to have to put up with people coming into a thread specifically designed for the belittling of the world cup and by extension football in all its forms and telling them off for their opinions.

Here's an idea - why don't you guys start a 'We love the World Cup' thread, the footie-haters can have this thread to get on with the serious business of hating football in, and then everyone'll be happy, eh? And, more importantly, Barbelith might just get back to appearing to be more mature than a site devoted to discussion of men fighting in their pants*.

*Except the Comics forum, obviously.

That's a great idea. In fact, rather than having any kind of debate whatsoever on Barbelith, why doesn't everyone who has an alternate view to any first post of any thread simply start another thread with their own opinions on the subject? I'm sure that will make everyone's experience of Barbelith much more satisfying.

Hey, Megsy, I'm far from the biggest footy fan in this thread - I don't even support an English team (although I will of course be supporting the England team). Duncan, Haus, (I think) Sax, and others are proper dyed in the wool football supporters, with club allegiances and special team outfits and everything.

I'm at best a part time football appreciator.

Aww, why have we changed the thread title? Are we afraid of offending necrophile bestialists?

(Or zoophiles if there are any reading who object to the term "bestialists".)

There's a discussion of this in the moderation requests thread, 'Nesh - essentially, Alex's grandma asked for a change.

I miss the thread title too. As a necrophile bestialist myself, I found it not offensive, but rather arousing... *sigh*, what to do now for my twisted, decomposition-fetishist kicks?

As a necrophile zoophile, I find your bestiality offensive. You are cheapening deadanimal-love.

John Cena really is shit though.

Carlito's where it's at.

And what's with all this Degeneration X shit? I'm dreading the day Road Dogg and X-Pac come through the curtain with sloppy grins on their faces.
