Yes, even this spanky new lateshift is beginning to smell funny. Just to continue a theme, tonight I shall be mostly ripping a second generation tape copy of The Legendary Wolfgang Press and Other Tall Stories. I shall brook no barracking on this.

How ya holding up Mr S?

It's never too late for Zombies... and with a trusty chainsaw its never too late for anyone.

Alright, actually- I just spoke to my mum and I feel much better about stuff now I know she's doing okay.

I'm a little grumpy about the fact that I have to work overtime tomorrow morning- it's not so much the extra work, it's just that working during the hours of daylight is WRONG. Still, it's only a couple of hours, so...

Music-wise, I'm listening to "Who's Got Trouble?" by Shivaree. I only know one of their songs- "Goodnight Moon" off the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack (which is an ace track), but I'd read other good things about them, then I saw this in HMV and they do a cover of Brian Eno's "The Fat Lady Of Limbourg", which is my FAVOURITE Eno song, so I thought "what the fuck?"
Sounds quite nice so far. She has a lovely voice, but some of the arrangements seem a bit... pedestrian. I get the feeling it might be a grower though.

great...now im going to have to go looking for that music and download it. Thanks alot!

Oh, to know anything about music from the past 15 years... It's not like it was in my day, when you could pick up three different weekly papaers and be thoroughly confused that they each loved and loathed bands in equal measure and you knew the good ones would be the only ones the three could agree on. Bah. Shiny NME? Arse, more like.

OK... now it's their cover of "the Fat Lady of Limbourg". And it's fucking ace. Other than the vocals (which are lovely) it sounds how I'd imagine the Bad Seeds doing "Fat Lady..." would. Except I'd never imagined that would be the sort of thing I'd be likely to hear.

I assume you understand that we have options on your time
And we'll ditch you in the harbour if we must
But if it all works out sweetly, you'll get the bonus you deserve
From doctors we trust

I somewhere still have on old NME (or maybe MM, not sure) from about 1988, where pretty much EVERY album was judged on how much it sounded like "The Young Gods" by The Young Gods.

I TOTALLY knew where I was with that type of criticsm.

Bet the NME wouldn't even COVER a new YG album these days.

21:25 / 14.04.05
Young Gods praise? That'd be 1991. In 1988 it was all Pixies and Muses. Given that you seem to have a soft spot for Ute, have you heard the German version of Entartete Musik? Rather good.

No, but I'll wager it IS damn good.

No, hang on, it must have been pre-1990 cos I was still living at my mum's house. And buying the music papers.

Aaaahhhh... "TV Sky" was 1991. That was when they all RE-discovered the Young Gods. Having, iirc, totally ignored the Young Gods Play Kurt Weill (which I no longer own a copy of and can't find on eDonkey and... grr.)

Okay, enough. Although I must say that I am now really getting into this Shivaree album. Not sure if the second half's actually better, or if the sound is growing on me, or if I'm just more favourably disposed towards them now. But it's very good.

Was never a YG fan myself, but I'm sure I have a friend who has that. There's no other way he'd know Surabaya Johnny, which he does. OOh, do you have the "soundtrack" (I reckon the film must have been more a "visual track" for the album) of September Songs? Veeeery good. Even Elvis "I'm Wendy James, look at me!" Costello is good on it.

Is it just me, or shouldn't something have, y'know... happened to Stoatie by now ?

Shit did. Let's move on.

Oh, have I made my "Ute and the Blowfish" joke before?

Oh. I have?

Ah.

In which case, I offer you all my humblest apologies.

Oh, sorry. Let's try and bust his 5k cherry, then and watch him blossom.

Stoooat, you'll be a Weasel sooon...

Don't mind me, just passing through. Combustible Edison did a cover of Surabaya Johnny...

Samn. Having trouble now. I forgot my brother replaced half the Wolgang Press album with The Cardiacs. Great album, but can I get the levels set on that merry-go-round of hell?
Can I arse.

Only ever saw Wolfgang Press once... strangely enough, they were supporting Nine Inch Nails. 1991, at the Astoria. They were very good, though.

Still think the video for "Kansas" is fucking genius.

Ah, you see, keggers, I heard about this amazing Sanctuary thing, which...

(sorry? what's that? Oh. Okay, Mister Funny. I understand)

...which I'm not allowed to talk about.

■
21:49 / 14.04.05
Oh, well done. Possibly the greatest band I never saw. I always felt aggrieved when anyone mentioned the Tindersticks after WP collapsed. It was like they'd sucked all the energy out and made money with it, or something.

■
21:53 / 14.04.05
OK, enough cluttering a shift with ramblings that should be in Music. I'm gonna make some cocoa and finish this tape. Night, all. You can come back in, now.

I mean, like, REALLY REALLY DANCIN'?

Eloi Tsabaoth

I hope this isn't some obscure musical reference that's soaring over my head and is going to make me look like a poorly inflated ninehammer.
