FYI...a 5 page preview can be found: here. It looks good, trés amusing with Zatanna attending a support group for superheroes with low self-esteem. The art is good too; Ryan Sook did some lovely work.

This, and Bulleteer, were the mini's I was least looking forward to. It's alright, certainly, but Grant's going to have to work overtime to get me to like the character of Zatanna. Pray she isn't a walking deus ex machina...

Good, but who wants to break it to him that BKV did the support group thing already in Runaways v2 #1?

Same Gimmick or different? Guess we'll find out.

Yeah, unlike Ho Garden, I always had this at the bottom of the list.

Mine went:

Klarion
Mr. M
Frankenstein
Guardian
Bulleteer (# 't's?)
SK
Zatanna

I like 'fishnets one' well enough, but the b/w therapy group preview pics a while back didn't strike me as tops. Though, there's Gimmix.

I liked SK better than MG, so already that's fucked.

I like the idea that she's in a support group _because_ she's a walking deus ex machina. She's so used to magic solving all of her problems she's become addicted to it. It's a take on heroic magicians I've not seen before.

Willow?

Different kind of addiction. This looks less like "I must have more power! *krackle*", and more like "I don't feel like going shopping. Seirecorg raeppa!"

Zatanna is one of the coolest characters in comics! This is definately the one i've been looking foreward to the most.

Really kewl art !

Shaping up to be my favourite so far. The art looks perfectly "pop" to infuse Zatanna with a new sensibility.

Obviously superhero help groups are the new black.

Spoo?

Beautiful art by Sook. And there's Gimmix from SS #0!

I just noticed that atanna has a chaos magic star on her shirt - very cool! I always thought the whole backwards talking thing that Zatanna does would be a great way to do chaos magic. I think Morrison is going to have a lot of fun with this character.

Finder: "Spoo!", the name of the rabbit, is a magickal wordplay on "Oops!", the name of the mistake.

I think this take on Zatanna really follows up on the mini-trade/mega-issue that came out a few years back called "Zatanna: Everyday Magic" (the cover was awful, but the interior art was quite nice). The art looks really similar, to.

But basically Everyday Magic was dealing with Zatanna away from fighting supervillains. More to the point, helping out a somewhat comical Constantine get out of a bargain that a pop-witch-whore put him under when he picked her up in Tannarak's (...who in god's name pick's up women in a bar where the common line of dialogue is stuff like "I am the Queen of Broken Reflections, give me a drink or I'll walk through your mirrors and strangle you with my necklase of broken dreams"?). It also had a very amusing abridged history of Zatanna as narrated by her rabbit.

I think I may pick up Morrison's Zatanna stuff. I'm really enjoying what I'm seeing so far.

I also think "spellaholic" is more in line with Sabrina than Willow. And not just "seirecrog raeppa" but also stuff like "dnes siht resol gnittih no em ot Lleh". Everyday Magic has some of that...like Z'anna packing her bags into her hat when she's in a hurry, having them levitate behind her, and possibly one of the greatest lines she's ever given ("Merry meet this, bitch").

...I'll be quiet now. Sorry, just a big Zatanna fan.

Hm. Although I consider her very much a JLA character (albeit 3rd tier), I'm confused how anyone can be a "big Zatanna fan". What's she been in to warrant that kind of adoration? Besides the fishnets.

You need more than fishnets? Fine, try this.

Bard: One-Man Humaton Hoedown

She was great in her appearences throughout "The Books of Magic", both the Gaiman original series, and the spinoff that occured later. THere's also "Everyday Magic", and various other places.

She also made the two cartoon appearences (Batman: the Animated Series "Zatanna", and Justice League Unlimited "This Little Pig"), and frankly is just neat.

She's easily one of my favourite mystical characters in the DCU, as she's one the ones with the most personality (though, of course, Constantine is definitly up there as well).

And yes...the fishnets, the tuxedo jacket, and the top hat really do play a factor there.

missing from that list: she's in the 'constantine's birthday' issue of hellblazer, a spliff levitating just a few inches from her lips. (funny letters-page a few months later: 'are we sereiously to believe that a long standing member of the jla would...')

'm'i tuo fo ym ecaf'

Ahh, so it's stoner appeal then.

When Zatanna appears in TV cartoons, how do they handle her talking backwards? If you see it in print, the process involves you reading it and (in my case at least) taking a few seconds to work out the magic command. Actually hearing it wouldn't be the same: it would sound like meaningless gibberish to most people, so you'd hear a garbled nonsense and then only work out what the spell had been by its result.

12:34 / 30.03.05
Oh, I totally understood what "spoo" was, I was just saying it because it's so weird and fun, sort of like Gimmix saying "spellaholic"? But I realize I wasn't clear. I was also echoing Z's multiple "spoo?"s in the book preview pages.

On the animated series the voice actress just spoke the backwards words, they did indeed sound like gibberish unless you thought about them.

So, really Zatanna is an interesting superheroine because she only "works" as a concept in print, with language as written text, not in TV or cinema with spoken dialogue.

'm'i tuo fo ym ecaf'

This was a line from the comic, wasn't it? Surely (pedantically) it doesn't make sense, because her saying it backwards wouldn't be a comment on being stoned, but an instruction to make her stoned? By which I mean: the words would make her off her face, and she wouldn't need the spliff.

The Falcon
15:33 / 30.03.05
There's normally a verb.

'Ecaf ym tuo teg.' would work.

Zatanna says is backwards 'cause she's really, really used to saying things backwards (really) and so does it by reflex/laziness, then. If absolutely everything she says backwards is a spell - meaning there's nothing else besides saying it, like intent - then she, yes, effectively ordered herself stoned, or something. Magickal retroactivity?
See,if 'Forty' had made it into the Constantine movie, I'd have watched it by now.
And for anyone who still thinks fishnets plus magic plus fatherquestingheroassistance doesn't make for great comics, there is no hope. If I could manage fishnets, magic, and team-ups with Hawk-People or the Atom for the rest of my life, I'd be satisfied. The odd BoM appearance here and there.

The implication of the chaos T-shirt may be that the backwards speech is simply her preferred method of sigilization. She forms the intent (a fairly simple declarative sentence), crafts the sigil (figures out how to say it backwards...not as easy as it looks) and launches it (says the sentence).

Classic chaos magic, really.

I thought we banned the word sigil from this site somewhere around the end of 2003...

This Sunday
01:53 / 31.03.05
But was there a sigil done up and charged to effect the ban on sigil and sigilisation?

And, c'mon, a comic dealing with magick by utilising in-story (and probably out) methods of magick actually used by day-to-day normal human people and not... I dunno, Jesus or Papa Midnite! For all the no-research complaints about Vinamarama (which I've probably spelled wrong, but surely for secret anagrammatic sigiling purposes), I thought people'd be happy with Georgie Mantrap's creation of a story that probably required no new or additional research for him to still get his facts all good and settled.

Feel free to mentally re-edit my post to eliminate the offending word(s). I was unaware that the term was taboo. =)

Loved the five page preview. 7 Soliders seems set to fulfill and exceed by high expectations.

BTW, Just bought a 50% off MARVEL BOY trade and thought that it absolutely ROCKED. If only Marvel had turned GM loose on the cosmic MU. He would have injected enough novelty and coolness to power this kind of tale for decades to come...

You can blame Bill Jemas for that one *grumble*.

So far, Seven Soldiers has failed to disappoint.

Zatanna!

What’s she been in?

Well - only the end of the fuckin world battle between ‘that which is beyond evil’ and ‘good’.

Cumon fellas: - Swampy! American Gothic - Crisis crossover - her old man (Zatarra or something like that), well, he pure gets burned to fuck during a seance - she’s got to watch her old man on fire! - (mad by the way - nae cunts allowed tae break the circle so they’re all sitting round holding hands - even with the flaming husk of zatanna’a da!!)

If my memory banks - bzzt - are correct - she pure humped Constantine at some point as well.

Was All-beard that wrote, of course.

Reread Shining Knight - isbest so far IMO.

Wrong Yawno, but yr forgiven. All a bit 'Heavy Metal' for my taste. Newsboy army and a Max Headroom editor do it for me every time.

Well, Constantine, obviously. But probably only if written by Ennis.

Zatanna #1 out today! Let the fun begin. Apparently Grant does a little Promethea-esque bit on magic(k) in the DCU.
