Y'know what's sad? I have an imperfect appreciation for 'The Godfather' cuz of this.
'The Godfather' is a bit before my time. Enough so that mob-style movies that I am more familiar with, which tend to invoke 'The Godfather', mean more to me than 'The Godfather'. Watching it for the first time I thought, "I've seen all this before". And I had. In every other mob movie I'd ever seen. It took me a few minutes to grok the fact that what I was watching was the TEMPLATE for all which had come after it, the mold and goal for all that would come after it. The result? A small cultural vacuum in my soul. |
