Keith, from comicbookresources:

According to Comics Continuum, "plans are for the show to return in late spring/summer. No definitive dates have been scheduled. According to Continuum sources, the show's future also remains undecided."

... ugh.

BUT the first season DVD is out soon, I think March.

Well, it sounds like they're at least doing one more season.

And with Batman 2, Superman Returns, and Wonder Woman on the movie horizon, they'd be fools to lose the cartoon tie-in featuring all of these characters! So sayeth me, at least.

I'm disappointed with the way the series peters out in the second-to-last episode. If you take all the themes and developments built up over the season the only logical outcome was a Kingdom Come-esque standoff... but... that doesn't happen. Instead opting for a bit of Flash Ex Machina to tie everything up.

I liked it. Brought actual tears to my eyes. It would have been even cooler if [SPOILER] Flash had disapeared for good, something to remind us of Barry Allen lonely death in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Maybe the first episode of next season could be about Flash "rescue" or something. Oh, well.

"Epilogue" was damn cool too. Little Ace's death! Wow!

Oh yeah. And Batman's new show sucks so immensely, it's hard to believe the excs ok'd it. Stupid soulless marketing people and their shows with lots of "looks" and no decent writer...

Oh I don't know. They have managed to turn the Burgess Meredith Penguin into a kung-fu midget with a pair of Kabuki/Wolverine sidekicks and Clayface into your atypical cop-done-wrong story.

That's Shakespeare in there.

Somewhere.

In that tiny little place where light cannot escape.

I agree. It's pretty bad.

Dude, I just realized something. By having Ace die with Batman there like that in Epilogue, the writers have short of added to why Bruce may have named his dog "Ace" in Batman Beyond (beyond the traditional "Ace the Bat-Hound" fanboy goodness).

Spyder, you just brok my brain.

To Contribute though, I got into the 3rd series about halfway through, got torrents of all the back episodes, and watched them all the way through.

Like Sudzu, this show is Pure Genius.

latest from comics continuum, some more details on the Supergirl & the Legion episode:

>> Paul Dini told The Continuum that he has written the upcoming episode of Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited that features Supergirl and The Legion of Super-Heroes.

Dini said he wrote the script from an outline by Dwayne McDuffie. It is the only episode Dini worked on for the current season.

The episode is titled "Far From Home." In the story, Supergirl is kidnapped to the 31st century for what the history books say was her last adventure. The Fatal Five appear, as do more than 20 Legionaires

According to a Cartoon Network representative, new episodes of Justice League Unlimited are targeted for late spring/summer.

So that last paragraph at least sounds positive for the near future of the show.

excerpts from an interview on Newsarama about all this from writer Stephen Fritz, who has covered cartoons online for a looong time:

>> Now it’s personal confession time, I’ve managed to get into a lot of trouble speculating on rumors. Let me explain.

In the infancy of this column (when it was originally called “Tooned In” for the late Combo magazine), I took a hard one on the chin, oddly enough about Justice League. At that time, 1995-6, Superman: The Animated Series, was at its peak, and some considerably reliable sources said that Timm and company were working on a JL series.

The howls of denial were so incredible I couldn’t believe it. I got calls from even the top brass at DC and Warner Bros., demanding to know who my sources were. I was even pilloried in other magazines for the piece.

Fact is, I was right, even though it put a serious strain on my relationship with both WB Animation and DC for some time to come (and I personally still refuse to talk to DC, but that’s for other reasons, too).

Well, truth be told, those same sources are telling me some interesting things now. The main thing is WB Animation is working on a slew of DC-related shows. Among them are Supergirl & The Legion of Super-Heroes, a new version of Superman (probably the most likely), a Doom Patrol series, and also there has been some talk about either a Brave & Bold or World’s Finest spin-off. What’s known is there is a Supergirl/Legion episode scripted and apparently running this season of JLU (It was written by Paul Dini, no less). In recent interviews I’ve done, WB veterans Glen Murakami and Alan Burnett have told me they would love to do a Doom Patrol series (and, according to my source, at least one of them is). As for Brave & Bold/World’s Finest?

“I don’t know about those, but I’d watch them,” [JL staffer] Tucker admitted when asked directly.

Here’s what I also know. When questioning both Warner Bros. and CN regarding the end of both the Teen Titans and the Justice League, both groups jumped on the defensive. CN, in particular, didn’t want me to think things were done with the Titans no matter what was being said. As proof they pointed out how the Titans had been moved to their new slot on the Miguzi afternoon block. As one of the channel’s most popular shows that does give me cause to pause.

Personal speculation, supplemented by sources, makes me think we will be seeing more Titans and JL in some form or another. What will determine the future of the League will be the ratings of this upcoming season. As for everything else, I’ll be sitting back and waiting.

On one final note, the Warners did tell me there is going to be a lot of announcements, in fact three sets of them, coming from them in the very near future. The first will be delivered during WonderCon this February 24-25. The second will be during the upfront sessions that will be held by Kids WB and CN on March 1. The last set will be around the middle of the March.

So, yeah, we’ll have to wait until that time. But then again, I’d much prefer to work with hardcore facts than what’s floating about the net these days.

File this under 'WTF?!': Two new episodes of JLU have aired ... in England! I turned my TV over today to Toonami and saw the last few mins of a new episode. A check at my favourite torrent emporium revealed two new episodes, released a couple of days ago? Have these been on in the states yet?

The eps are called Flash and Substance and Dead Reckoning. The Flash ep is quite neat, focusing on his rogues gallery with Captains Cold and Boomerang, Mirror Master (not a scot though) and the Trickster (Mark Hamill) all taking on the Wally in the new Flash Museum.

Dead Reckoning is a Deadman ep, on of my favourite characters. It's a pretty funny episode, there's a bit with Supes that made me giggle, but there some pretty shattering stuff in this. Grodds ultimate plan is revealed (very funny), Batman is going to pe piiiiiiiiissed, and the ending.... oooooh, the ending. Can't wait for the rest of the season.

The torrents were awful though, very fuzzy with shitty sound, so download at your own risk. Seriously, why would anyone bother releasing something as poor as this?

Anyway, what's up with the scheduling? We Brits are usually the neglected ginger stepchild when it comes to getting cartoons. Do the powers that be want to kill JLU with mad schedule jumps and no advertising?

Damn.....sounds like JLU has indeed been cancelled, but this is not an official confirmation yet.

From Aint It Cool News yesterday:
----------------------------------------------
Good news and bad news for fans of “Justice League Unlimited.”

The good news is the Cartoon Network apparently begins new episodes on Feb. 11 at 8:30 p.m.

The bad news is veteran cartoon scribe Paul Dini apparently posted this on a website:

"I did an on camera interview with [JLU writer-producer] Bruce [Timm], David (Jimmy Olsen) Kaufman, Glen Murakami and Alan Burnett last night for the next (and last) SUPERMAN DVD set. Afterwards we went to dinner where Glen confirmed the end of TITANS, and Bruce said pretty much the same about JLU. There has been some talk about the JLU episodes airing earlier in the states, but that was still being debated at Cartoon Network. I forgot to ask Bruce how my Supergirl episode came out. Maybe I can get a preview if I'm at WB any time soon."

"I had heard people were getting more territorial with certain DC characters (no more Joker in JLU, for instance) but I didn't know the details. I knew two years ago when I left, that as heroes (and their villains) got snapped up in live movie options, it tended limited their appearances elsewhere."

back to AICN: These Time Warner turf wars over DC characters have to be the stupidest things ever. “JLU,” starring Superman and Batman, has co-existed for years alongside “Smallville” and “The Batman” (to say nothing of “Batman Begins” or “Superman Returns” or the many, many Superman and Batman comic books in production or all the old Superman and Batman projects floating around on DVDs and in repeats).

The final nine episodes that CN begins transmitting in two weeks:

5.5 Episode #31 - Flash and Substance
Batman and Orion see a different side of the Flash when a rogues' gallery of villains attacks the museum that is opening in his honor.

5.6 Episode #32 - Dead Reckoning
The ghost of a circus performer convinces Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman to help him retrieve the stolen souls of a mystic order of Monks.

5.7 Episode #33 - Patriot Act
When an out of control super soldier threatens Metropolis, Green Arrow leads seven non-powered Justice Leaguers, including Crimson Avenger and Shining Knight, in a battle they can't hope to win.

5.8 Episode #34 - The Great Brain Robbery
A mystical accident leads to Lex Luthor and the Flash's minds being swapped into each other's bodies.

5.9 Episode #35 - Grudge Match
Roulette starts Metabrawl ("Cat and Canary") again, this time with an all-female fight card made up of Justice Leaguers.

5.10 Episode #36 - Far From Home
Supergirl, Green Lantern and Green Arrow travel into the future where they meet the Legion of Super Heroes and their enemies The Fatal Five.

5.11 Episode #37 - Ancient History
The Shadow Thief returns and so does Hawkman as more mysteries from "Shadow of the Hawk" are explored.

5.12 Episode #38 - Alive (Part 1)
In a knock-down drag out battle on Earth and in space, the power moving behind the scenes of the villains is revealed leading to the most unexpected team-up in Justice League history.

5.13 Episode #39 - Destroyer (Part 2)
Series Finale
In a knock-down drag out battle on Earth and in space, the power moving behind the scenes of the villains is revealed leading to the most unexpected team-up in Justice League history.

SPOILERZZZ

Toonami pull the same annoying shit they did last season and cut off my Justice League fix just as the action was about to go through the roof. What do I have in it's stead? Frigging Pokemon!

Saw "Ancient History" and "Alive" last week. The first being a rather weak flashback to (yawn) an Eygpt ruled by the previous incarnations of Hawkgirl and Hawkman, with added Green Lanternism as the general of their armies.

Pretty dull, Could have used some Vandal Savage action in the past.

"Alive" on the other hand was very good. Focusing entirely on the Society. Grodd leads a revolt against Luthor, only to get his hairy ass blasted into space. Swathes of the villains get killed(?) fighting one another. Finally a certain craggy face badguy makes his return to Apocalypse.

The finale should be a super-brawl to rival the invasion of the Watchtower last season.

There are many many rumors that the series will be cancelled/not renewed. See above posts in this thread. However, there have been no official announcements from WB animation about this as of yet, just tons of rumors from high-level sources that the JL cartoon is doomed.

There are, however, also rumors of a Legion of Super-Heroe cartoon being developed by WB animation, so if JL gets cancelled we might still have *some* new DCU animated goodness on the way...although it's not clear whether Bruce Timm would be working on it.

I haven't seen it linked here yet, but there's a wealth of information over at the Justice League Watchtower.

for instance (from the 'Shadow of the Hawk' entry, re: Thanagarian wings:

Dwayne McDuffie on the Hawk’s wings: “Shayera’s wings are organic; like all modern-day Thanagarians she was born with them. Carter Hall, [however], is human, [and] his wings strap on. He learned how to make them from the Thanagarian tech in the tomb he was studying. Not explained on the show (but according to Bruce Timm) Thanagarians used to make their wings, only in the past several hundred years have they genetically engineered themselves to grow organic wings.

“Their culture had great respect for hawks […] and they developed winged, Nth Metal flying harnesses thousands of years ago. […] The pre-Egyptian history era Katar and Shayera Hol had artificial wings. […] When their technology advanced far enough, they genetically engineered themselves to have natural wings. For many generations now, Thanagarians [have been] born with natural wings.

“Warhawk (Rex Stewart, future son of Shayera Hol and John Stewart) was born without wings, this is as a result of his half-human heritage. Warhawk’s wings are artificial. Shayera and a Thanagarian male would produce organically-winged offspring, like any other Thanagarian couple.

“Oh, and in my opinion, on Thanagar ‘Shayera Hol’ is about as common a name as ‘John Smith’

apparently the Legion animated series is happening: check out this from Comics Continuum:

>> LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ANIMATED

Andy Milder has been cast for the voice of Lighting Lad in the upcoming animated series featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes, The Continuum has learned.

The series, from Warner Bros. Animation, is expected to be announced soon. Creators from both Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans are involved in the project.

Milder played Dean Hodes in Showtime's Weeds. He's provided voices for such video games as The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines, Men of Valor and Star Trek: Elite Force II.

The first season of JL comes out in March, they seem to be doing a box set every 4 or 5 months...so since JLU starts with JL season 3, it looks like it won't be til late 2006 or early 2007 for the first JLU boxset to come out (if they keep up with this same pattern they've been in).

No spoilers, just waiting for you all to catch up. In fact, avoid any chance of spoilers in this case and just watch the story. If someone lets you in on what happens you'll be very sad they did.

Needless to say, spoilers for the finalé follow:

It was absolutely wonderful, being very much Superman, Lex and Batman's episode. It saw cameos from every Leaguer that's made an appearance thusfar and the animation was well above the usual standard. I was worried that they wouldn't fit in the return of J'onn, but that even that sub-plot received a somewhat satisfactory resolution. The defeat of Darkseid also leaves the season open to a possible continuation, but unfortunately, I doubt we'll be seeing that.

Got this from World's Finest:

Warner Home Video has officially announced that the second season of Justice League and the third and final volume of Superman: The Animated Series will arrive on DVD June 20th. While there is a discrepancy with the "Full Frame" that Warner announced for Justice League, it's believed that it is still the widescreen transfer that Warner told us about a few months back.

*spolers for last episode beware*

I saw this over the weekend, and it was well, well worth the wait. Following the tradition for this season, there's enough extra characters to give a DC fanboy a heart attack (Creeper!! Metron! Zatanna! More Aztek! Some old guy you've been missing but didn't realise!) and the fight scenes are absolutely brutal. The final fight with Supes and Darkseid was great, I was grinning like a five-year-old, and I felt like crying it was so good. And Batman gets some impressive hits in on Darkseid, so I was a happy little Bat-fan.

The ending was also very cool, with the heroes running down-stairs towards the camera. It was at once touching, stirring and heart-breaking. Cartoons will never be quite as good as this again.

A very Kirbyish episode that takes its inspiration from an entirely different Kirby, Fantastic Four vs. Galactus. Very big fight against a nigh unstoppable force. Boom, Metron (Uatu) shows up to take Lex to the Anti-Life Force (Nullifier). Also, Batman outruns the freaking Omega Force! That was a moment of such fanboyish Batgod glee that I jumped up and cheered.

Somehow, I can't see the LoSH being half as compelling. The episode from earlier on this season of JLU was amusing, but Justice League is so good because it's icons, legendary characters (plus some great obscure ones). The LoSH don't have a fifth of the star power of the League.

Although I'm quite ready to be proved wrong, I'm still a little bitter at JLU being cancelled...

Lex Luthor is pleased

I pissed. Two other great things about that ep include:

1. Big budget pisstake of the Superfriends from 3rd person ranting Luthor (see above) to the entire Legion taking the time to announce each of their individual parts in the plan.

2. Talking apes.

God, that ending was awesome. I'm waiting for Luthor and Darkseid to return in Legion of Superheroes. As Batman said, they'll be back. (I hope)

And did anyone else get this tingling feeling when they heard Darkseid say "It's beautiful"? I don't know why, it was just a perfect moment.
