I agree totally, Coma. That White Queen is an utter bitch who wears white. Seeing that this is the case, I doubt someone like Emma would take a back seat to Hank McCoy in the Jet. If she couldn't pilot it, she borrow Hank's memories or something but she, of all poeple, wouln't be reduced to peek-a-booing over Scott's seat like some bored six-year old. That said, I do love the part where Scott blows a hole in the wall and he and Emma step through. Just like an old married couple. Speaking of which, since when did Scott shoot lasers out of his eyes that appear to burn the recipient? Quietly actually made his blasts look concusive, it looked like a force beam. While on the topic, Beast looks like that giant, flying dog from the Neverending Story. Will they have students in the school again? Because a good idea for a student would be a mutant telepathic sentient brain tumor that pilots a human teenage girl.

P.S Enough with the bitch slapping, already! Take the cat-fight to the sky...

Amazingly, you're wrong again*. Could you do me a favour? Could you develop some kind of critical faculties and ability to reason before you post on Barbelith again? Like maybe you could have this huge fucking epiphany: "Wow, dude, maybe I shouldn't dismiss a writer's work by saying it's exactly like a scene from his TV show, when I can't remember really basic facts about the show in question! I better rethink my whole approach to posting on Barbelith so that I seem less of a FUCKING MUPPET!" Do you think you could do that for me? Could you at least try?

*For what it's worth, it was Warren that Willow killed. Jonathan was killed by Andrew. Andrew is now affiliated to Buffy's international school for Slayers

MAN WHO CARES IF HE FORGOT THE NAME OF TV GEEK #2 IF HE HAS THE BASIC GIST OF THE PLOT

Jesus fucking christ, you and your clique of blog chums can be such uppity little shits sometimes. Give the guy a fucking break and cut the newbie bashing bullshit, I seem to recall him having flitted around here for some time. If he wants to express fanboyish plot ideas, it's cool - god knows we've all done it here and there.

But coma wendigo wasn't talking about the basic gist of the plot, Radiator. Have a look at the post I was originally replying to, in which it is claimed that Kitty's return to the Mansion is, and I quote "almost an exact reproduction of" certain scenes from Buffy. It seems to me that if you're going to criticise a writer for saying that his latest work is near-identical to his earlier work, you might want to get your facts right. Had coma wendigo said something like "the basic gist of Kitty's return is similar to things that happened in Buffy, in that a female character is returning to a familiar location after experiences that have changed her", that would have been something else altogether, and my response to that would probably have been more along the lines of pointing out that that's not really unique to Whedon, and we should probably wait and see what pans out before we start worrying that he'll just recycle old ideas.

Don't quite get the reference to "chums". Oh, wait, this seems to be your tactit in the other thread about AXM: "You're agreeing with each other! That's bad!" It's kinda an unusual approach to discussion. But I guess you probably needed something to fall back on in lieu of actually having read the issue in question (a bit like that time you claimed The Strokes sounded too much like The Stooges and then had to admit you'd never really listened to the latter band), so I'l let you off.

I'm with Flyboy on this - there's a big difference between recurring motifs and recycling one's own work.

I don't think it is quite fair to dismiss the villains just yet - we've barely met them. It's probably a good idea to reserve some judgement until at least until we've all read the second or third issue.

11:09 / 04.06.04
To be fair Flyboy, you didn't critique the fact that he had something to say about Joss Whedon recycling past storylines, you called him a Muppet because he forgot the name of a minor character (please don't bile-storm me with snarky comments about how Warren wasn't a minor character).

And keyword "ALMOST"

Matthew Fluxington
11:13 / 04.06.04
I don't think that Flyboy was totally wrong to dismiss the guy for getting all of the names wrong - there's a pretty substantial difference between Andrew and Warren. It's not much different from someone saying "Wasn't it rad when Giles accidentally shot Cordelia after leaving Tara at the altar?"

Which is probably why I haven't read any of them save for a quick browse in book shops...

Radiator, my point was broader than that. Morrison, like any other artist, begs, borrows and steals, left, right and centre - it's what you do with your loot that counts.

Also, crazy ol' me, I usually read a work before criticising it.

Villain Dismissed! If a villain is green, and it has a metal spit-guard over its nose and it wears a Little Red-Riding hood and it has an iron Madonna pointy bra on, it should get dismissed. From the first moment I saw Cassandra Nova, I knew she was going to be the shit (and she looks like a little old lady in a leotard). I mean he's got a three-letter name, for fuck's sake (B-Movie name for a B-Movie villian?).

Those three were nondiscript nobodies who meant nothing. And the substantial difference is? They're both ugly and were crap characters, I didn't realize I was taking on the Super Geek Legion of Sunnydale by misreferencing, jeez! No, your example sucks because Cordelia and Giles actually appeared in the title credits, you should have said: It's not much different from someone saying "Wasn't it rad when Jack played the bass and Gary played the drums in Oz's band?"

Cassaday is good, even though of all three preview pages there are only three panels that look good (Page 1; Panel 3, Page 2; Panel 1, Page 3; Panel 4).

Whaaaa?

Joss Whedon is another story all together. I fear we're doomed to read a book in which the X-Men will, for an entire year, re-enact Whedons favorite Buffy moments.

Wrooooong. You'll soon be eating those words, i'm sure of it.

Dark Willow was a total queen uberbitch! What did you think of her as a character Coma?

Woops, threadrot alert. Sorry guys. To be honest i don't think we're going to get answers in the next issue, Whedon seemed to take a while to build his stories up in Buffy and Angel, but when they did start coming together they where often amazing.

I'd say it's going to start really looking good when it get's to issue 4,5 and i think it will be worth the wait. Josh isn't a daft guy, and without the restrictions he had in TV he can surely pull off some brilliant stuff.

PREVIOUSLY ON BARBELITH:

Coma Wedigo: I have a vaild point about AXM which I wish to express in an intelligent manner.

Flyboy's anus: (((((CLENCH))))))

Flyboy: Fuck off! You got a minor detail wrong, which doesn't really invalidate your point because anyone with two braincells to rub together could clearly see what you meant. Please go away until you learn to post correctly!

Moi: You're an arsehole, however no doubt your clique will back you up on that little shitfit you threw back there.

Flyboy: I'm not part of a clique! (Here is a pointless reminder of a thread from last year)

(2 posts later)

Additonally, I checked JLA out and it didn't seem worth my time, so I left it on the shelf. Maybe some other day.

Given I'm unable to get to a comic shop, I've done the very best I can to get as much info on Joss' run as I can, and I've tried to garner as much of the plot from spoilers as possible. I'm doing the best I can in my circumstances...

For what it's worth (and seeing as the thread is totally rotted anyway):

There are a few good reasons why a Buffy fan would, at least by now, know the names of the geeks.

1. Jonathan's been a bit parter/"guest star" in toooo many episodes to mention - all the way back to season two (?).

2. Warren was the also-ran Big Bad of season 6. By the end of the run, you knew his name.

3. Andrew was all over season 7 and he's even guested in Angel, soooo....

...thinking about it, you don't have to be that much of a geek to pickup on this really fucking obvious stuff.

Back on track: I really like the Buffy baddie. He looks cool. And that weapon! Just sliiiiiding into his hand.

One last time: I wouldn't have picked coma wendigo up on that detail if he had not been trying to claim that on the basis of one issue, Whedon was repeating himself. I think if you are going to claim that one thing is almost exactly the same as another in such a dismissive manner, you might want to make sure you're not leaving your goal open.

Hmmm. In many ways "the best you can" might be to avoid commenting on the issue until you'd read it. It's OK - we can wait. It'll hurt, but we can wait.

Now, it occurs to me that this thread is now a discussion of Jeff's other great pop culture work, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and also of the relationships between members of Barbelith, which is obviously far more interesting then any comic book, and has the advantage of requiring no commitment of time or money in reading up beforehand. So, should we lock this thread and start again, delete this thread and start again, or change the name of this thread to "FLUX N FLYBOY TOUCH EACH OTHER ON THE BOTTOM NO RETURNS AND U R LAME!", whack it over to the Conversation and start a new thread on Jeff's Astonishing X-Men here?

Alternatively, you kids could get this thread back on topic. Your choice.

One word, Rob Frost: Bus-Piloting (or is that two?).

Sorry that I made everyone soil their underwear (the little pink ones with Joss Whedons face on the bulge). I was just trying to be pragmatic.

I was jumping on the conclusion, I admit, eventhough I think Marti Noxon is still the better writer of the two. Joss Whedon may be brilliant (to some) but so was Chris Carter and the Dawson Creek/Scream one (Kevin Williamson) all the other one hit wonders that American TV churns out year after year. They fade away and then they write screenplays for Tara Reid movies. This book is going to be average...

Of course, we're neglecting the possibility that this villain may in fact be dredged up from the wastes of continuity and given a makeover. Could he be, for example, a post-secondary-mutation Mesmero? And will the Purple Girl therefore have to join the X-Men? The Purple Girl is exactly the sort of misunderstoo teen John Whedon loves to write...

Sorry, silly me. My mistake.

*Jeff* Whedon.

Gosh, am I a moderator of the Comic Books thread? I surely am. Will I start moving posts from people who have no interest in talking about "Astonishing X-Men #2" for deletion, in the hope that this thread will not be rotted through? I surely may.

So, is anyone actually interested in the comic? Or is the thought of 24 pages with up to two hundred or so words on each one just too terrifying?

Let's just keep this thread as is. It'll change course once the issue actually comes out. We've had NXM threads go on crazy tangents before the issue came out, and we never deleted them.
