At crazy short notice I just found out that Avenue D (who should need no introduction) are playing in London this Friday, at 333 - and there are still tickets available.

Also - You Say Party! We Say Die! (shouty Canadian punky pop, at their best a bit like good old Le Tigre, follow that link to hear some songs and focus on 'The Gap (Between The Rich & The Poor)' in particular) are playing at the 100 Club on Wednesday. Again see Ticketweb for details...

This is pretty good timing as I have a meeting I may not survive on Wednesday and in general it will be a cause for celebration if I make it to the end of the week sane and employed - either way, definitely one or both of these sound good to me - anyone else?

Bugger me, I can't believe Milky Wimpshake are still going...

Proper indie that is, mate.

And, as a contribution to the thread, I should like to point out that the heavily Residents-go-Boredoms fun of the mighty Gang Gang Dance will be appearing at the Engine Rooms in Brighton on the 28th of August. Starts at 7.00pm. Will be mentalismo.

Dundee based Eye as well as Birmingham band Mother Trucker and Bossk, who I believe have just finished touring with Cult of Luna are doing gigs in the Midlands, Luton and Leeds.

The dates are

Sep 20th, Chapter 11, Birmingham
Sep 21st, Time Bar, Leicester
Sep 22nd, The Well, Luton
Sep 23rd, The Old Angel, Nottingham (not sure if Bossk is playing that)
Sep 24th, The Fenton, Leeds

For more info including a taste of the Eye see:

Eyemakemusic

(Second attempt at linkage on Barbelith I hope this works better.)

All of the bands are stoner rock (as much as I hate that phrase)/progressive metal (also icky) call them what you well.

Eye are the most melodic, instrumental, be turns mellow and sinister though capable of heaviness. They have been favourable compared to Mogwai in the past. (Okay so I’m not a music journalist.)

Mother Trucker and Bossk are heavier though still melodic. All the bands on the line up are excellent musicians. If bands like Mogwai, Isis, Pelican etc. are of interest to you, or you just like rock/metal or you fancy a change I'd heavily recommend checking them out.

I seem to go to far too many gigs lately so it takes quite a bit to get me excited...

These two on the other hand have got as excitable as hyperactive child who's had too many orange smarties:

Noah Howard + Evan Parker + John Edwards + Chris Corsano Quartet
The Spitz, London
23rd January

I've discovered both John Edwards and Chris Corsano within the last year and been blown away whenever I've heard them, both have such incredible ingenuity and imagination- just putting them in the same room together has me salivating- and I missed their duo at the LMC festival in December. Add to that Evan Parker, who's played a major part in some of my favourite Brotzmann recordings, seems to have had such a widespread influence on the free improv world and I haven't actually managed to hear him play live yet.

Noah Howard's a bit of a mystery to me, although his relationship with Albert Ayler and ESP records has go me seriously intrigued.

And all these peopel playing together...

sotto voce festival
State 51, London
10th February

Amplified Room
-
5.15pm PORTABLE (Rhodri Davies, Ben Drew, Louisa Martin and Ivar Grydeland (UK/NO)
7.15pm BIRDS OF DELAY (UK)
9.00pm TESTICLE HAZARD (Lasse Marhaug and Tommi Keranen) (NO/FI)
10.30pm: AUFGEHOBEN (a/v) (UK)

Self-Resonant Room
-
4.30pm Stefano TEDESCO, Roger TURNER & Joe WILLIAMSON (IT/UK/CA)
6.30pm GARY SMITH (UK)
8.15pm RHODRI DAVIES & ANGHARAD DAVIES (UK)
9.45pm JAMES BLACKSHAW (UK)

The thing I'm really excited about is aufgehoben. I bought their record, 'Anno Fauve' a year or so ago and it was louder, harsher more distorted and wrong than anything else I'd heard before... but then you couldn't hear them live- even though they'd been going 8 years, they were totally studio based, the idea was they meet in the studio, record the album in one take and then physically manipulate the ADAT tapes during mastering. This is their first UK live performance after playing in Portugal last December...

I also really like the idea of having an amplified and non amplified stage, as the acts won't be on at the same time it should really change your listening habits between acts, being utterly brutalised then listening for subtleties in sound..

As for the others... Rhodri and Angharad Davies are both fantastic and I've been told very good things about Birds of Delay and the fantastically named Testicle Hazard

I was actually thinking of resurrecting this thread or starting a new one this week in order to set forth a few things I have in my diary London-wise and see if anyone else was interested.

I'm definitely looking forward to the Howard/Parker/Edwards/Corsano gig next week... I'm gonna do my best to catch as much decent live jazz/improv this year as possible, and this one sounds like it should be pretty ripping.

A couple of other dates this month;

Billy Childish & The Musicians of the British Empire Friday Jan 19th, The Boston Arms, Tufnell Park

Thus far, I think the best thing about moving to London has been frequent Billy Childish gigs. He's gonna be sick of the sight of me by the time the year is out.

Jack Rose, Thursday January 25th, The Luminaire

Absolutely mind-bogglingly amazing folk/drone/raga post-Fahey guitar player, and one third of Pelt. I've never seen him live before. Hope I get to the front.

The Future of the Left, Tuesday January 30th, 100 Club

Falco from McLusky's new band. Nuff said.

The thing I'm really looking forward to next is Nurse With Wound at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 3rd March. Having missed them at ATP in December, I hope there's no major bus strike or similar impediment to travelling to the South Bank.

Bobby Conn is playing two gigs in London next Wednesday (24 January) - one supporting Califone at Dingwall's, the next headlining at The Buffalo Bar. Cross-town craziness and glam rock marvellousness ahoy!

I've still not been to Tufnell Park to see Billy Childish in all the years he's been playing there. One day, one day.

Come along! The Dirty Water thingy strikes me as a really swell club night actually - killer music, reasonably priced drinks, nice school hall dance type atmosphere and modestly attended, so plenty of room to breathe and/or cut loose. Potentially long journey home for me after the tubes stop, but aside from that: thumbs up!

OK, if anyone's interested, here's how my next month or so lines up;

Friday, Feb 23rd: The Ponys, Dirty Water Club

Haven't actually ever heard these guys, but: American! Fuzzy, psychey, cool! Chaotic, garagey, 60s! Liked by both garage-rock fans and The Wire! £6 on the door and a nice atmosphere! How can this not be good?

Tuesday, March 6th: Help She Can't Swim, Buffalo Bar

A couple of years back, Help She Can't Swim released an album which is the best thing made by British teenagers EVER. It is fucking astonishing. I named my short-lived DJ night after them but never managed to actually see them play. Then they lost a member and released a single which was bloody awful. I lost interest. Now they're back, and I have it on good authority that their new stuff is the best thing made by British early-20somethings EVER. etc.

Saturday March 10th: Future of the Left, Luminaire

So I didn't actually make it to their gig at the 100 Club. Ex-Mclusky, and if that means anything to you, what else needs to be said.

Anybody know of any other good London things going on in Feb / March?

I recently saw These Arms Are Snakes play in Brisbane. I was totally fucking blown away, and as they are about to start on a UK tour, I thought I'd give a shout out to my UK-bound barbrethren.

Dates, taken off their myspace page:

Apr 14 2007 8:00P Joiners - Southampton
Apr 15 2007 8:00P Barfly - Birmingham
Apr 16 2007 8:00P ABC2 - Glasgow, Northwest
Apr 17 2007 8:00P Satan's Hollow - Manchester
Apr 18 2007 8:00P Cockpit - Leeds
Apr 19 2007 8:00P Islington Academy - London
Apr 20 2007 8:00P Audio - Brighton

They're classed as Post-Hard/Math Core, so if you like it heavy yet interesting, definately check them out.

For Barbelith's information, London things so far in my diary for March:

Friday March 2nd - "The Acid Gallery", The Buffalo Bar

A garage punk / psychedelic rock club night featuring live bands... a good bet for a Friday night out if I can persuade anyone to go with me!

Saturday March 3rd - Pickled Egg Night, Bardens Boudoir

Pickled Egg is a really very excellent Leicester-based record label, in case you didn't know. The bands playing are Zukanican (Can style groove band with horns, two drummers, electronics..) and Dragon or Emperor (Lightning Bolt-meets-Pere Ubu bass & drums beat-down). Nigel Pickled Egg is a great DJ of weird, far-out dancing records too.

Tuesday March 6th - Help She Can't Swim, Buffalo Bar

Did I mention this on my previous post in this thread? I really love Help She Can't Swim but have never had a chance to see them live... This is an "Artrocker" club night thingy, so it's free but you need to be a member of their stupid-ass club or whatever, which I hopefully soon will be if it means I can go to this.

Saturday March 10th - Future of the Left, The Luminaire

So yeah, I missed 'em last time. I will check out tickets for this one, as I think they might be selling quick..

Friday March 23rd - Ill Ease w/ Jenny Hoyston, Ebony Bones, The Dirty Water Club

Ill Ease is a solo electronica lady, Jenny Hoyston is the singer from Erase Errata. Ebony Bones are kind of a kick-ass voodoo girl-group. The Dirty Water Club is great. Sounds like a winner!

RACCOO-OO-OON with Tight Meat Duo + Hunting Lodge Wed 14th March / Seymours Primal rhythms, swirling sax, heavy riffs and ecstatic rites in an almighty three band pile up at Seymours. A final funktion at the Family Club before it closes. Cacophonous stuff. Based in Iowa City, Raccoo-oo-oon are one of the most interesting bands floating around in America's psych-punk ether right now. A kaleidoscopic mix of free-rock splutter, woodland mantras, echoplexed sax/vocals, and explosive drumming, this four piece come over like Comets on Fire at their freest, or early tribal Animal Collective but with a harder-edged punk sensibility. Following numerous limited (and seriously in demand) CD-R releases for a plethora of labels, including their own Night People imprint, 'The Cave of Spirits Forever' album has just been reissued on Time Lag, remastered by Yellow Swan's Pete Swanson. Tight Meat Duo are a high octane free jazz/punk duo from Glasgow featuring the prolific free drummer Alex Nielson (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Jandek, Scatter) and David Keenan (Taurpis Tula, Telstar Ponies) on sax. They have now released several shit in Gssh! Gssh! Records... visit www.gsshgssh.com and buy! They have played with many bands in many places and now are planning their tour through Japan. They have shared stage and played with pretty (and not that pretty) bands such as: Year Future, Lightning Bolt, Hot Snakes, That Fucking Tank, Les Georges Leningrad, Polysics, Erase Errata, Outhud, Dogs die in Hot cars, Dirtbombs, Ensaladilla Rusa, The Cheese, Margarita, Murdo, Veracruz, 3 delicias, Humbert Humbert, Ginferno...etc 22 10 IN A PEN fantastic act that we cannot wait to see, half playing their own stuff, half DJing other people's music. From the organisers:

---------
Our Technicolour Dream

In April 1967, a massive psychedelic happening took place in Alexandra Palace, North London. One of the most infamous acid freak-outs to ever take place in London, it was headlined by Pink Floyd and featured bands, poets, artists, freaks, hipsters, mods, mockers, and the in-crowd of the day.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The 14-Hour Technicolor Dream the ICA is hosting a huge event on the 21st of April that will be mandatory for anyone with the slightest interest in 60s (counter)culture.

There will be a whole host of rare films, bands (including The Pretty Things and Arthur Brown, who both played the ‘67 event) and the mighty freak-folk combo Circulus, DJs, the mind-warping OPTIKinetics lightshow and a Q&A with some of the most important figures from back in the day reminiscing about the original Technicolor Dream.

Sadly, no all-day passes are available, but tickets to each of the events and full details are available here and see also here

In addition, there is going to be an after-party organised by Sleep All Day, Drive All Night. Starting around midnight and going on all night, it will take place in a secret venue in the East End and will feature DJs Cherrystones, Barry 7 and a guest DJ slot from the organisers of the Technicolor Dream under the name The Brothers Grim. There will also be a live performance and cabaret. Tickets will first be made available to those attending the ICA event and then will be offered to people on this list. Admission will be with advance tickets only. Tickets are now available here

Spread the word.

For the freaks . . . by the freaks!
You’d better believe it.

All of which sounds quite fun.

March and April are looking busy:

Raagnagrok, Europe's favourite synth and electric sitar drone aquanauts, will be playing their first engagement of 2007 on 28th March at:

The Gluerooms
The Amersham Arms, 388 New Cross Road, London
doors 8pm, acts start 9pm prompt, bar til 12, £3 Entry
tube/train: New Cross/New Cross Gate

Also appearing will be Flange Magnus and Devotchka.s Conundrum as well as residents DJ Tendraw & The Gypsies Dog and DJ Body Damage & Possibly Sick.

and

The Night Of the Long Swords
The Windmill, 22 Blenheim Gardens, Brixton
doors 8pm, £4 Entry
tube/train: Brixton

Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses, Raagnagrok, Einstellung and Comfy Moss.

Miasma and Raagnagrok are both excellent live acts, the former being fond of painting themselves with make-up which runs down their faces under the stage lights while they play intense carnivalesque prog, and the latter wear jumpsuits and cowls while sounding like Popul Vuh reanimated.

It was a really enjoyable gig Locust - definitely one of my favourite experiences of recent months. There was a weird atmosphere (as you might expect from a meeting of four deeply idiosyncratic dudes who’ve never played together as a quartet before) and the ‘rock gig’ time-frame seemed slightly stifling, but some really superb blowing/hitting/picking from all concerned – some real letting rip, some real wordless subtleties and some real musical joyousness.

Myself and Rich T discussed it in this thread.

The Gluerooms is an ace night, I played there last year- Mic and Patrick are great and do some proper wrong things with little circuit bent keyboards.

..and they've got Justice Yeldham playing in May (as recommended by Seth on the Live Recommendations thread

I'm a bit torn between that night and Philip Jeck playing Fear of Jazz though...

Another unexpected John Edwards appearance last friday too, accompanying Leila Adu with Steve Noble on drums. Best rhythm section you could ever wish for...
