Ok. So after much yakityyak in the Notebook thread in Conversation some genius decided that a Barbbook should be created wherein person A writes, draws, cuts and glues or whatever into a notebook. Once thats done the person sends it on to person B who does likewise and then sends it on to C and so on and so on..
Now here's the ideas...
Talk dicuss edit criticize yell

a)The list should be decided by which person is closest to which person so as to cut down on the amount of time the book spends laying about in the mail. SO if a new person wants in..they dont automacally go to the bottom of the list. If you're living on the space station dont expect the book today.( The barbatlas should come in handy here)

b)Each person should only be allowed to have the book for a certain amount of time. If that time expires, tough. The show must go on.

c)There should be a limit as to the amount of space one person may use. A page or two should be fine.

d)Once a person receives the book he/she must post that he/she recived it and do the same when its put into the mail along with who its sent to.

e)At some point it the book shalll be scanned and posted (Persephone has offered space)

Any other ideas are damn welcomed.
I hear there was a mix-taped idea like this that went lest than gloriously..we dont want that.

Yes! Me, me, me, me, I'm in.

Perhaps we could also scan the page/s we've done ourselves if we have a scanner, in order not to drown Persephone in boring scanning at the end?

Hey thois DOES sound pretty fun...

should those of us who are in posesion of the Book allow other (non-barbies) to contribute to it?
Thus creating a minor image of the person's imidate surroundings... or simply place their contribution.

Perhaps the canceled stamps should also be include. So if i where to recieve the book from texas I should clip the stamps and include them in the page... hmmm this would only work if they are interesting stamps I suppose. The little computer printout that the US postal service when you pay to have a package delivered is pretty bland.

I love the cancelled stamp idea, even if the stamps are bland. It's still cool to have a trail where the thing has been, like passport stamps. Plus then you don't have to worry about blank page syndrome, yeah? Because you know you gotta start by sticking on that stamp.

I don't mind doing the scanning ...*air cig* please, what do you think husbands are for... but it would be very cool for people with scanners to scan & email me the pics, and I could post updates. And if you don't have a scanner, it's no problem; I'll add in your stuff at the end.

I'd suggest that if you want to volunteer, state your name & location in this thread --like so:

What do you think is the ideal number of people for this? Say, two pages per person x 45 people = 90 pp. Is that too many?

...I'll add a dot for everyone who posts in here on the Barbatlas if that's alright with everyone...

This is a really neat idea, by the way.

I think its a bad idea. Just because the amount of effort (and time) its going to take to get just the reg. 'Lithers all coordinated and working like the well oiled machine it should be. Adding people who arn't on the board (people we cant PM and pester) would just add more insanity.
But then again you have the book for a week and one or 2 of those pages are yours to do what you want to. So if you want to shove it into a friends hands and say "DO SOMETHING!!!" Who am I to say no?

And again this is a group project so I'll wait to see what other people think.

I think there should be a FAQ created somewhere...

That seems fair to me, Keg.

And again this is a group project so I'll wait to see what other people think.

Group project... but you're the gaffer, right? Because I think we'll need somebody to call the shots, eventually.

As for FAQs, you could write them up on Barbelith's wiki. Or once the project is ready to get started, I could make up a page for the Wandering Notebook project on QG --sort of like the Radio Free Barbelith page, but better than that. It could start with the rules of the project that everyone eventuallly agrees on, and a link to this thread; and as the scans start coming in, I'll post those up too.

I think we should try and avoid letting people who aren't members of Barbelith contribute, unless of course you think it's vital for your page that your friends join in. But in that case you are completely responsible for them not fucking it up.

Now that I have worked out what a cancelled stamp is I think it's a lovely idea as it pulls the book together, a sort of linking thread if you like.

Ariande, don't worry about coming up with something interesting, I'd say there's a tendency amongst almost everyone to think that what they've created is the most dull, it's just part of being an artist, darling.

Oh, oh, I just wrote "Artit." Which I was so tempted to leave. From here on in I proclaim myself to be an Artit.

"I hear there was a mix-taped idea like this that went lest than gloriously..we dont want that."

Heh heh. Problems arose when tapes got lost in the post, people left the board, changed email address, moved house or got hold of the tapes at times when they had too much going on, or more important things to worry about.

It will be interersting to see how this goes, and I really hope it goes well. Limiting the time that people can hang on to the notebook is a good idea even though it will be impossible to enforce without an international network of heavies at your disposal. I recommend constant nagging.

The latest attempt at a tape is still going, btw, just very sloooowly.

count me in.
i'm in glasgow, and im already on the barbemap.

should there be a thread once it gets underway to let us know when it arrives with each person? sort of a mail tracking system that lets us know who to consume in the fiery wrath of barbelith if the book goes missing for a few days.

all it would need would be a simple "i've got it" and then an "i sent it today". everyone knows the time post takes in their area, right?

The thread idea's a great one..sorta what I had in mind with rule D.

Is there any partcular type of notebook that we should use?

I'm in!!!! (I'm in San Francisco...)

What kind of notebook?

It's tempting to suggest a loose-leaf binder, so that pages can be sent "home" to be posted online (may cut down on postage, although probably not significantly). I'd recommend keeping and forwarding at least four pages to the next artiste...

Another option is a bound book with blank numbered pages - pretty much the opposite of the loose-leaf idea - it has a very "permanent record" sort of feel to it that may be ideal for making a record of this book passing through the lives of Barbelithers (and maybe their associates).

In either case, I want to contribute!

I vote for not bigger than my scanner --that could be something that's 8-1/2" x 11' either per page (a letter-size notebook), or per two pages (a junior-size notebook). Also, something that lies flat when open.

I like the sound of this, mainly because I want to see what everyone's written before me... provided it wasn't more difficult to scan. One that's bound so it stays together, but in in a kind of wimpy way so it lies flat, sounds cool.

A5 (14.8cm x 21cm) or similar is my preferred size and I'd definitely like to see it all kept together - various people have scanners, so it can be scanned at least in part on the way around.
