Okay, can we rename this "the thread for people who don't have the courage of their convictions and instead like being given the opportunity to be two-faced pricks"? Or maybe "Livejournal's this way, please use it for your pathetic, petty-minded whining and stop stinking the board up"?

Agreed Randy. Certainly the abstract should say something about passive-agressiveness and the lacking of balls.

No not really no. Hasn't got that much of a ring to it!!

You can call it that though if you like.

why do you keep coming back to a thread you have such strong negative feelings about, strix?
i dont wish to tell you what to read, but i do wonder why you come here if it makes you uncomfortable.

your thoughts regarding whether the comments are aimed at you seem to suggest you think many of them are, and i also wonder why that is.

are you doing things you feel are worthy of attack?

or do you feel that you are in some way a target?

i apologise if this sounds as though i am getting at you.
i am genuinely curious as to why your experience of the text is so different to mine.

Dude, it doesn't even begin to hint at the depths of rank childishness on show in these seven pages.

Someone one day is going to have to do a study on the psychological impact of message boards.

I have my reasons toksik, and they are none of anyone's business. Nor do I care to explain. Why should I? So people can have a go at me too?

One of the problems with this thread is the utter cowardice of it.

i suppose you could tell me via PM..?
i am not at all likely to use it against you, as i am sure you are aware.

i would have said it does.
i would describe the comments herein as exactly that.
what do you feel snide covers, if not these comments and their ilk?

Thank you Toksik for understanding. I have indulged in this thread myself at time when I felt helpless to confront someone. I realized how useless it was to vent this way, and that the only purpose it served was to hope that the person it was directed at would see it, but not be able to effectively defend themselves unless they were willing to be accused of making assumptions.

What good is that? What does that say about me...or anyone else who indulges themselves another's expense without being able to take what they dish out?

i think your efforts to understand what it says about you are way more likely to yeild accurate results than your efforts to apply your findings to the issue of other people's motives.

magpies are always wary of other birds stealing their treasure, i am told. despite the fact most other birds dont really go in for the rob, their own behaviour makes them more inclined to suspect such behaviour in others.

this is something i have since noticed in myself and other talking monkeys.

just a thought.

I'm in broad agreement with Strix and Randy on this one.

If it's a potential post you feel SHOULDN'T BE POSTED, don't post it. Especially not in a thread whose every reader is wondering "hmm... what could THAT be in reference to?" and then having a look. I do it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. And I usually wish I hadn't.

It's a message board, for fuck's sake. How much more anonymity do you need?

Char Aina
21:04 / 16.10.05
you dont really have functional anonymity, dude.
your meat and your cyber personas may not be linked in a visible way, but your comments as stoatie are clearly the words of the person behind the stoatie screen name, whoever he may be.
you and your past exploits are there for anyone to read. you cant really get away from them witout getting another suit, which we dont currently allow.

I meant more kind of in the sense of "safety", as in "not within punching distance" Okay, I used the wrong word, really. "Distance", maybe.

Making a comment, knowing the person it's aimed at has a pretty good chance of receiving it but won't be able to do anything about it... it just seems a bit shit, really.

Well, yeah, this thread's horribly passive-aggressive, but that's the deal, isn't it? We knew that from the opening post. Also, as with any semi-anonymised venting, the barbs are bound to hit those with a tendency toward paranoia - or, I suppose, narcissism - more often than their intended targets. If that's becoming a real problem, then maybe it is time to knock it on the head.

Open confrontation! That's what we want!

It also means that people might have to make the effort to, I dunno, actually fucking converse with each other. This is no solution - it's totally bloody obvious that all it's serving to do is keep long-running feuds going. Wait, take that back - it's also simply providing another space for certain, deeply fucking tiresome feuds to take place in. See the end of the last page and the beginning of this one.

We knew that from the opening post.

Yeah, we did. My fault for not expressing how annoying and stupid I felt it was at the time, I suppose, but I'd hoped it was going to be one of those things that ends up sinking after a short period of popularity (and, to be fair, it wasn't anything like as bad as it's become when it first started, being slightly more tongue-in-cheek than entirely serious). That's not happened, and every single time that it's bumped back up to the top it pisses me off that little bit more.

I'd always figured that 'snide' meant a comment that had some sort of wit about it. My mistake again. I guess it should have been obvious from the standard of some of the posts that I'd got that wrong. Hur hur, you suck your own cock, you do. And so on. But I do want to point out one thing that was supposed to happen in this thread and plainly hasn't been for, ooh, the vast majority of it: Don't tell us where they're from, and remove any tell-tale details. Instead, every fucker and hir dog can make a pretty good guess at who the targets of a lot of the shit in here are, which makes it even more of a great, pus-filled zit on the board's face.

Barbelith: gobbing on each other's PE kits and running away since 2003.

(Sorry, Duncan, but I disagreed the lock. I don't like this thread either, and I wouldn't post to it. But some people clearly do like it and I'll need more convincing that it's unacceptable. And you never know, those who continue to use it might undergo the same kind of conversion that Strix has.)

Well like you say, faces get zits. You can squeeze them, you can even Oxecute 'em but they usually come back.

This could have been an interesting thread if the usual playground rubbish hadn't occured, the thread summary suggests a slightly more light-hearted approach. However the shape it's taken is slightly more sinister.
Uncomfortable as it may be for some, i'm not sure it should be binned though, it does serve as a means for people to vent without thread rotting, however cowardly that may be.

Wow this place has changed!

Actually, I posted here because I lost the original thread in the time it took to come up with a good comeback, and I can't even remember who flamed me.
But my honour is satisfied!

No, actually, that's a lie. I remember who it was, and this is a comfortable medium for me between turning the other cheek and perpetuating another pointless feud. Really, if I can't get my hands around your neck, what's the point? I still don't like every cunt and hir dog taking potshots at me, so this thread is my punching bag. If you don't like it, feck off, wowser.

Passive aggression, people. Adjective "passive aggressive", noun "passive aggression".

I'm a bit torn on this one. It may be preventing threads from rotting into personal abuse, but the standard of the comments being made here has certainly described a steady fall. On the other hand, if we start closing threads just because stupid posts are being added, where do we stop?

Maybe it's time for the "Name and shame full-frontal assault followed by bitter self-loathing" thread, where you have specifically to name whomever you are bitching about and then also PM them apologising fulsomely for having done so (with link)...
