Well, I applaud the current showrunners for turning the status quo so utterly on its head at the end of the last season (it made sense, since the end of season 4 really did bring to a close a larger story that goes back at least three seasons). This has already pissed off some very vocal 'fans' on the web, who seem to have forgotten that morally ambiguous choices tend to come back to haunt characters in the Whedonverse - let's hope that there will consequences for taking Wolfram & Hart's offer for all the characters, both internal and external. My only worry is that even with Connor and Cordy out of the picture (for the moment or for good, we'll see), there will too many characters jostling for attention - Spike will obviously get fair bit of attention, but let's hope this in balance... It would be really easy for Wes to get sidelined at this point: he's come full circle and while he's changed, he's been reintegrated into the group. I'm also worried that what's in store for Gunn may be ill-judged to say the least (making a connection with a big mystical panther, having his brain enlarged, whuh? - I really hope we don't get more clumsy 'social commentary' like when we found out he'd put his soul on layaway for a nice car... ugh).
There's real opportunity for good Angel/Spike interaction though, now that they're both so different than the last time they met. Angel has lost a lot in the past year or so, and I fully expect him to plunge into moral greyness yet again - Spike could, weirdly, end up acting as his disemodied conscience, but then he's likely to be pretty fucked-up and unstable too...
(The rumours of Spike/Fred interaction, let alone God help us all a romance, absolutely terify me.) |
