If anyone is out and about during Free Comic Book Day tomorrow (is that just a North American thing?), a six-page story spinning off an upcoming book I'm writing for Ape Entertainment is in the Ape FCBD book:

The book's called RPM -- it's work-for-hire stuff, kind of a G.I. Joe/Transformers mash-up where rival futuristic racing organizations secretly duke it out in the giant robots their vehicles transform into. Loads of fun!

So I was looking for a place to plug something without it being out of place, and this looks like the spot. I just recently started an old style BBS (bulletin board system, think 1980s 300 baud dialup on the old commodore 64) in the boston area, and its got some discussion forums and such, along with a couple of door games. Right now its just internet accessible, rather than dialup, but I may throw in a phone line as well for anyone nostalgically inclined. In any case, its over at arkham.mine.nu with forums for occult, paranormal, comics, entertainment, and general "bad ideas" (think totse). Also hoping to have announcements for fun events, mostly local to the boston area, or at least general northeast, but anything epically big enough will probably get discussed there as well. Anyway, if anyone's so inclined, its over at telnet://arkham.mine.nu. See you there!

My band is playing on Thursday...I know it's late notice, but I've been out of comission with the dreaded lurgie for a week and a half!

If you missed our performance at the Three Crowns a few weeks ago, Morning Bride headline a very special night of live music this coming Thursday, 14th May 2009 in the suitably spiritual surroundings of the 11th-century St. Mary's Old Church, on Stoke Newington Church Street, London N16. (If you're not familiar with this beautiful building, have a look here)

Why not? Sounds kinky. And those two obviously didn´t mind and weren´t in a cage. That zoo is a park, btw, where many animals are out in the open.

If you're about in Camden tomorrow and looking for cool things to do, try this:

Due to the recent Tube strike we have rescheduled the Liars' League (this is a bunch of new short stories read by actors) Surf & Turf event to 7pm, this Tuesday 23rd June at Proud Galleries, Camden, and seeing as the event sponsor is Smirnoff, we've also thrown in a few more stories on the subject of vodka for good measure (do you see what we did there? Never mind ...)

Proud's address is at the bottom of this email and as you can see from this map, the venue's squarely between Camden and Chalk Farm tubes, each of which are about a five-minute walk. It's a fiver as ever when we're at this venue, but that covers the whole night, whihc includes various bands and DJs and a very cool late-night bar.

We’ve a mouthwatering line-up of talent on in the main gallery, and the night will feature ingredients as diverse as aquatic fantasies, lost sailors, seaside tragedies, stolen penguins, and the hitherto solemnly secret world of juvenile amphibians - not to mention desert islands, amnesiac alcoholics, and the best cocktail in the world. And here they are:

What water feels like to the tadpoles by Tom McKay
Rain Music by Margot Taylor
Carnival by Jane MacKenzie
A Pocket full of Penguin by Rosalind Stopps
Me and my Goldfish by Mi L Holliday
One Luxury by Richard Meredith
Minuit Noir at the Ali Babar by Maggie Womersley
Smirnoff Vodka - One Litre by Clare Sandling

See you there!

"We're The Great Old Ones Now : My paperback's out - and since the whole thing is a deranged ninja/lovestory/ontological crisis with asswhupping, apocalypses and monsters, it has a certain Barbelith feel to it.

Be interested to know what y'all think."

Finally got to this in the pile. Wow! It's great. Isn't the cliche that the first book is always autobiographical?

Hmmm... can definitely see the influences Pynchon, Palahniuk, Carroll. Real page turner at the end after a meandering middle. Never expected the reveal. Thought provoking, social commentary with ninjas_no_less...

I'm going to lend it on. Still not sure that sanud means in Persian what you think it does?

Really very good. When's the next one?

I'm going to try and write a poem in collaboration with the audience, constructing it out of their tweets, my observations, and their random shouting.

Probably a lot of random shouting. Essentially I'll be taking dictation for late night drunks.

is there somewhere I can see footage of you and the Dalek? I haven't yet explored the 1andother site in enough detail, so apologies if it's just there and I'm too lazy...

Those great chaps over at Mindless Ones have run a comic that I entered for the Jonathan Cape/Observer comic competition. It's a four-pager based off of a movie idea I had a long time ago and still want to do something with, but it's just a relief at this point to see it down on the page in any fashion. Have a wee gander and see what you think.

I'm not baaaack but I really wanted to give a shout-out to this new magic book. (Full disclosure: I am in it.)

Women's Voices in Magic is a very fine anthology of writing by female magicians (or in my case a genderqueer-with-a-twat magician).

The topics range from the history of women in magic to alchemy to modern witchcraft. Loads of personal experience, which is always useful to read, and lots of insights into gender, sexism in magic, etc. It is very shiny.

I'm promoting a new documentary by Liz Mermin (Shot in Bombay, Office Tigers, The Beauty Academy of Kabul, Team Qatar).

It's Horses (a film):

What can we know of what it's like to be a horse? Not just any horse, but a top-end national-hunt racehorse in Ireland? This is the challenge HORSES takes up, following three charismatic horses over the course of a difficult racing year.

It avoids any anthropomorphic take, using music cues, odd perspectives and wide angles to interpret events and the mood of the equine stars.

It's actually set very close to where I spent the first ten years of my life, in Wexford Ireland, and in a similar environment too (my uncle trained and bred racehorses). The jockeys, trainers and stablehands are an odd collection, some charismatic, some brash, others backward, all very Irish and I think people might find some things in the documentary very funny.

It's showing later this year on BBC as part of the Storyville series and and is currently showing in the ICA London, so if you're around and want to see a great sports / art documentary, you should go.

There are lots more reviews and details on the facebook page check it out become a fan, etc!

And follow the below link to hear director Liz Mermin talk to the Guardian's James Solomon about the process of making 'Horses'.

Hi all

Thought I'd plug the new website we've been working on. It's called Storyimp, and it's a place to post and read online fiction. We're trying to give writers some of the functionality of a social networking site (along with plugins to Twitter and Facebook). Writers who use the site can add their own Amazon adverts and googleads to their pages, allowing them to make some cash. We've also optimised the site for iPhones/mobile devices.

Here's our logo:

Storyimp - Publish, Read, Download

In terms of content we would be grateful for anyone posting short stories, longer episodic fiction, viginettes or poetry. We're allowing writers to post under a variety of licenses including All Rights Reserved and a variety of Creative Commons/Open Source licenses.

We're also looking for people to join in the community. There are a few stories and poems online already and we could definitely use the kind of creative and structured feedback that Barbelith has demonstrated. We want to encourage and support new writers, so we'll also be linking to writing resources, so if anyone else has sites they think would be useful, please let us know.

Thanks everyone...
