Almost 10pm. Watching Die Hard. Yippie-cay-ay, motherfuckers.

Can anyone connect Jeremy Irons to Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon?

that
11:02 / 11.05.03
Why did they give Alan Rickman a German accent in Die Hard? Alan Rickman has a sexy, sardonic voice, terrible not to use it...and English people are always evil or stupid in American films anyway, so it would have made no difference.

Aw, come on. Six-hundred und vorty million dollas... - that's just genius.

In another note, I saw him buy a couch once. At Heal's. Moneyed bastard. Only thing I ever had from there were some martini glasses, as it was the only shop along Tottenham Ct Rd that sold them...

Matter arising: voila. Two degrees.

Fuck, Elijah, that sounds really shit. (If you're still around. Well, even if you're asleep, it still sounds really shit, but you won't be reading this. You know what I mean.) Just hang on in there, and move the fuck out as quick as possible. And if the other guys/girls aren't speaking to you, they're probably not worth worrying about (said he, having absolutely fuck all idea of the situation, but meaning well nonetheless.)

Die Hard. You bastard, Roth. I so wish I had time to watch Die Hard now before going to bed. Argh. I came home, thinking "yeah, in bed by 2:30 pm, gives me time to check out Barbelith and have a quick bang on Deus Ex... that's all I really want right now." But no! You go and set me ambitions that are unattainable!!! Damn you! (Oh yeah, and I am still working on your CDs, btw.)

Oh yes!

Oh yes!

Oh fucking yes!!!

However, let me give you a possible downside to that: Indiana Jones 4 is still in production, as far as I know...

so, its just after 6, im about half done with my school project.

my favortie line in die hard has got to be when bruce gives the bad guy the gun, and when he tries to shoot him he just says "aw, No bullets" as if he really feels bad for the guy.

I havent heard from the entire work crew yet, but one of the people involved has pretty much said they dont want to talk to me again. the quasi-ex came in around 330am, nothing happened, but it still hurts

now i feel like im fighting off a coma, likely some of the stuff i ate/drank, but a friend is on the way over and we are going to grab a bite to eat...

I'm on page ten. I need at least three more to have this look respectable. Then there's my final exam essay, a scant four pages on an easy topic. Almost done. Almost wound up. I really hate the month of May.

Hello darlings,

Well, here I am, just finishing off some freelancing stuff. I did my first ever job as an independent contractor on Friday, which paid approximately a tenner a word, so that's not so bad. Hoom. Still not sure what to do in the slightly longer term, though. Perhaps VelvetVandal and I should form a commune. Or a genitally-mutilated Harry Potter death cult..

You could equate the different Hogwarts houses to Horsemen of the Apocalypse. That'd be big fun.

Dude! That is so the best idea in the Universe. And then Leap could teach us how to use our melee weapons for the most efficient self-emasculation....it's all good. It's *all* good.

So how is Aristophanes? You were looking at the Frogs, yes?

you what i dont get about alan rickmans character in die hard? he seems to speak english with a german accent. but then he tries to fake out bruce willis by speaking in a sort of generic american accent. if he can speak flawless english, why was he speaking with a german accent in the first place? was it just a put-on?

ONLY NICE THINGS
00:51 / 12.05.03
Because he's German? Because, having gone to the trouble of learning English in order to communicate with monoglot Anglos, he might draw the line at constantly faking an American accent as well?

Char Aina
00:55 / 12.05.03
yeah, but he can do a convincing 'w', and a good 'f', so why act like an amateur?

You got me there. Possibly because it's less hassle, possibly because he likes to sound Teutonic and scary. Although German *has* "f"s, so he's getting no props for that.

So how is Aristophanes? You were looking at the Frogs, yes?

That's on the back burner for the moment, I'm currently wrapping up a longer paper on the difference between human sacrifice and murder in Greek tragedy, with a focus on the deaths of Iphegenia, Agammemnon and Clytemnestra. Not speaking Greek isn't helping, since the word choice seems to be incredibly key, with no English equivelant, so I'm basically hypothesizing left and right.

It would be hilarious if Flitwick rode the pale horse. Or the pale pony.

Although I am becoming increasingly seduced by the idea of Alan Rickman goign through the entire film with a perfect English accent, and everyone saying "Hang on, I thought you were German," and him having to explain every single time that he *is* German, but he spent a lot of time learning English, which along with Arabic is pretty much the language of international terrorism, and so happens not to speak English with a German accent.

it would in fact have made for a much better film.

Speaking of better films, I am currently halfway through "MacGuyver and the Treasure of Atlantis". Now *this* is more like it.

Oh, bugger. Not wishing to sound defeatist, but there is so much about the Agamemnon in particular that does demand having read it in the Greek to make sense, but I'm sure you'll find a way. Have you read Vidal-Nacquet's "Hunting and Sacrifice in Aeschylus' Oresteia"? Sounds like it might be useful...what conclusions have you reached so far? And how much better would Iphigenia at Aulis have been if Alan Rickman had hijacked the Greek camp halfway through and Diomedes, stripped to his vest, had had to defeat him through crawling-based actions?

Char Aina

i'm loving the idea of arabic being the international language of terrorism, even when you are german.

they should have had rickman running around yelling in arabic, and having to stop to explain himself.

Have you read Vidal-Nacquet's "Hunting and Sacrifice in Aeschylus' Oresteia

No, I haven't. I'll have to find that one. As for conclusions, mine are fairly lame, entirely conjecture. Basically taking in the factors of did a god demand that said person die, did the sacrificer get anything out of it, what was the primary motivation for the killing, etc. I'm kind of balancing it on the notion of Iphegenia's death being more on the sacrifice end of the scale, Agamemnon's more on the revenge/murder, and Clytemnestra's falling in the middle.

And how much better would Iphigenia at Aulis have been if Alan Rickman had hijacked the Greek camp halfway through and Diomedes, stripped to his vest, had had to defeat him through crawling-based actions?

Yes! Snape as bronze age terrorist, marking down the crapper heroes.

"Mister Mnestheus.....Mister Idomeneus, where *is* Mister Mnestheus? Very well. Twenty points from Achaea for tardiness."

The article is collected in "Tragedy and Myth in Ancient Greece" by Vernant and Vidal-Naquet. The Lloyd translation was released by the Humanities Press of New Jersey in the States. it's incorrigibly French but does have its moments.

Would you mind testing this out for us? Husb is trying to figure out how to post sound files... the first eleven probably only work on a Mac, but hopefully the 12th one works on Windows as well. If you'd just click on the song titles & see if anything happens, and also say what system/browser you're on?
