We are expected to fill the rest in ourselves, and you just know how we are supposed to do it...

Go see the movie? Or read the fanfiction?

It's something to do, at any rate, and it beats (with a hockey stick) the hell out of those damned "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" novels I was using to kill time. I could actually feel myself getting stupider. Brain cells performing sepuku to spare themselves the indignity.

Ach. Hardly. We are expected to know, from the name "Cho Chang", that she has long straight dark hair, asiatic eyes, a sallow complexion te tum te tum te tum. A bait that has been swallowed hook, line and sinker by fan art. It's post-imperial J.K Rowling syndrome again - see also the way black characters are sidelined, either commentating on Quidditch (as opposed to, say, participating) or being surpassed immediately by Potter in the wizarding trials as he assumes the position of alpha Gryffindor.

Yep, Laurell Hamilton gets past bad observation and in to suicidally awful. So awful that no UK publisher will pick up the books.

being surpassed immediately by Potter in the wizarding trials as he assumes the position of alpha Gryffindor.

Yes but that's Harry's role. Rowling's following the pattern of all those that have gone before. It's a poor defence but I doubt we'd be as delighted if they were truly original books, I revel in the timeless boarding school blues.

Gods bless you all for that.

But this is what I loathe about Potter - he's presented as the underdog - isolated, picked on by Snape and bullied by Malfoy - but he completely disrupts the formal narrative of the pluckiest boy in the school by also being hideously rich, massively famous, insanely talented at games, the hero of Hogwarts unto the second generation and the darling of at least 75% of the school. And that's before you get into all that "your dad was a stag" bollocks...

And thus it sends out the perfect message- you can have everything but if you don't have a good psychological support system and some love in your early life you're fucked. Not so unrealistic.

.. and just enough to work within the overlapping genre's. Admittedly they could be better and just as compelling.

Hello all you fine potter-talking peoples!
Its been soo long since I read the damn books that I've forgotten most of what happened in them.

I am ill-equipped for such a discussion, and I have muggle work tomorrow (ministry of trying to look busy), bright and early. Hugs and kisses to all, Anna, Keg, Haus, extra huggles to potguns, (I've only seen Darko once, and I'm not prepared to say I understand it yet, but you sound disturbed).

Maybe your friend's stupid 'cos it rocks and the soundtrack is scrumplicious and it's funny.

No he's anything but stupid...but its just not his type of movie. I've only heard the mad world song from the soundtrack and that was pretty cool.

Okay, well seeing as how he's your friend I won't send any of my mutant, exotic, disabling psychic powers to maim him. Am going to bed, my head's swimming and that indicates sleep time.

No it indicates that my friend sent his mutant, exotic, disabling psychic powers to maim you...but he works sooo damn slow!

Anna, you are going to hell for that image.

I'm about to hit the sack; have just rewarded myself with another episode of The West Wing. I've worked pretty well today - nailed notes on Aristotle's Poetics, reread The Persians and finally got it, and also came out with masses on Death of a Salesman. Arthur Miller is going to save my Tragedy paper.

In other news: I need to see X2 so badly it hurts. I also need to perk up.

I just got my redundancy payoff (memo to me - bank the thing tomnorrow), had a drink afterwards with Tom, Cal, Sleaze and Cherry Bomb, where we planned how to be all cliquey and everything, honest, and am now wondering whether special needs Barbelith should be encouraged in the interests of democracy and the First Amendment, or discouraged on the grounds that you can get simpletons pretty well everywhere on the Internet.

special needs Barbelith
Dare I ask?

you can get simpletons pretty well everywhere on the Internet.
There's one on T.V. Right now. On practically every damn channel. Except UPN, where the WWE still reigns supreme, and the WB, where Jamie Kennedy is holding court.

Sadly, I don't know if that's possible. When a great blast of verbiage can be generated simply by admixing insults with the same seven or eight phrases, repeated until everybody else is bleeding from the nose, what can one do? Moderation, referring to the property rather than the action, requires an ounce of self-awareness.

It reminds me a bit of the debates over the use of various words on Barbelith - people pointing out that in the rest of their lives they spent a lot of time in environments where those terminologies where used all the time without examination. If anyone has found themselves trapped on the letters page of the Daily Mail, their only release being Barbelith, they must feel rather similar...am wondering when we get on to foreigners, homosexuals and women.

I'm watching I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. I feel like I live in a Special Needs world and real life only seems to affirm it.

You're doing a lot better than me - although I have asssuaged the urge to take the piss yet further by pruning the Head Shop instead - it was getting so that every single topic was turning into the same topic. The boy is the Grey Goo of Barbelith...

Still, I imagine he'll probably calm down at some point. Or be laid off and have the piss taken out of him *mercilessly*.

Sorry, that was a bad thought, wasn't it? let us speak of happier things. When are you in London? And how are the ivory towers? Have you finished up your workchunk?
