I'd like to say that myself and my family have been in the pudding business in this town for generations. In fact, it was my great great great grandfather, Old Mcgrant, who codiscovered the first tapioca mine in Mount Huggles with his partner, Pappy Todd, the revered ancestor of our current mayor. I've dedicated my life to service for my fellow citizens of Toddsylvania. Do I ask for reward? Only a decent living wage - the same as I'd want for any of you!
And to think, to think that there are those among us who threaten our decent system with their lies, deceit and murderous ways! I say we find these guys and SET THEM ON FIRE!!!

By the rules of any 'secret villain' action thriller you care to watch, such as the Fugitive or that one with Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker, I can't think of the name, the mafia will be the most trustworthy character, no matter how implausible. Grant's story is much too good. I, on the other hand, am too stupid, I can't keep a secret, and I was born without a trigger finger.

I need one substitute player. If you know of anyone who might be interested, have them PM me immediately.

Thank you,

Are members of the mafia chosen randomly or do people volunteer to be the mafia?

Sorry chaps, I know I'm a bit late. Got caught in a snowstorm up on Mount Huggles and had to melt my way out with Turkish cigarettes. Hope I haven't missed anything important.

You didn't have to volunteer, did you...Lion...heart...

Dedicated my life to service...decent living wage for you...sounds like union speak to me...and everyone knows who runs the labor unions around here...

Me? Do you think I'd be making these stupid puddings if I was making money from racketeering? I only wish I was the Mafia...

I'm not mafia. I was asking cause I realized that the rules didn't mention how mafia and seers/detectives get chosen. I'm neither mafia nor seer. But i do own a bakery!

Excellent...Now that everyone is confirmed, I can post a list of players to this thread:

Qalyn
bio K9
grant
Persephone
Chairman Maominstoat loves a long name
Whisky Priestess
Sax
Lionheart
Jupiter Jade
Paleface
Tezcatlipoca
Duncan

Three of these people are Mafia. The job of the village is to flush them out, and kill them one by one, before they murder everyone in the town. Why are they murdering everyone in the town? I don't know, frankly.

Tomorrow ,1/8/03,, beginning at 14:00 Barbetime, the voting begins in this thread as to who is the first person accused by the mob. Vote only once. Once everyone has voted, the person accused will leave the game. Then the fun begins...

The Toddsylvanian Express grinds to a halt, the squeal of the pistons filling the empty station. Through the dense steam steps a figure, a tall rogue of a man, half-cut in the half-light. He stands for a moment on the platform, resplendent in his pinstripe suit and exploding hat, then walks swiftly past the ticket clerk and out into the community...

Ah! Toddsylvania at last. Say, anyone know where I can get a room around here?

crap. I guess I missed some of the rules. Now I'll have to read them again.

So whenever the vote happens I'm voting that Sax is mafia. Cause he's been acting suspiciously right in the beginning hoping we won't think he's mafia cause he's being so open about it.

I was wondering that myself. My landlady seems to have been mysteriously murdered and I can't get into the house. someone told me she was chopped into little bits with a pizza cutter, but I dismiss such tattle as the fantastical nonsense it surely is.

Anyway, after a weekend trapped in snow on the mountain, I'm famished and need a beer. Why don't we go to that nice pasta place, Fugazi's? Or would that be a bad idea?

..... tumbleweed ....

The Pudding-Maker's Arms, then?

I wouldn't stay in it even if it were empty. You'll have a terrible job getting any bloodstains out, and you know... tarnished by the same brush, and all that?

But maybe if we say that Sax is mafia enough he'll just crack and admit to it.

And you never know what kind of traps could have been left to catch the unwary...

Just like to point out that I'm not Mafia- being crap at both stealth and shooting, I doubt they'd have me even if I volunteered. I can make a damn fine pudding, though.

I'm sure you can...senior Maominstoti.

"Why are they murdering everyone in the town? I don't know, frankly." said our esteemed (and completely above suspicion, natch) Mayor. If we catch 'em, can we make 'em tell us?

And Lionheart... you seem awfully eager to pin this one on Sax...

And Tez- there's nothing remotely Mafia-esque about my puddings- that "horse-head surprise" was a one-off. It tasted vile, so I never tried making another one.

Persephone

This is what I'm thinking.

This was the private message in my mailbox this morning:

"Have you noticed there are quite a few people missing from the town? I think Lionheart is involved..."

So I went to the thread --that is, I went into town; and sure enough, there was young Lionheart softly lobbing accusations at me and Sax.

I know one thing: I am an innocent villager. Therefore, Lionheart is either innocently --but wrongly-- speculating on my guilt ...or is deliberately throwing attention from his own.

And what about my mysterious benefactor? There are only two strong possibilities to my mind: one, that ze is a seer and is trying to warn people about the present danger that is Lionheart; or two, that ze is a mafioso trying to get innocent Lionheart killed. It's perfect because I know that Lionheart is wrong to suspect me, so that makes me already susceptible to suspecting him.

I do hate being a sucker, though. Today I have piles of work to do, so I leave off thinking... around lunchtime, it occurs to me that the private message would be very credible indeed if it were timestamped before Lionheart's post. I don't know why I think this, but I do:

Lionheart's post: 05:36 07.01.2003
private message: 08:57 07.01.2003

And at 08:58 07.01.2003 bio K9 innocently appears in town, asking about his dogs. All of a sudden bio K9 starts to look a little *too* innocent to me. What bothers me the most is the private message, which was indeed sent to me by my dog-loving friend. If he's a seer, then he has good reason to hide his powers --else the Mafia eliminate him forthwith. But I think that he cannot know *both* that Lionheart is a mafioso and that I am a villager --it's too early in the game-- and it's just too risky for him to gamble that I'm not Mafia. Unless he knows that I'm not. Because he is.

I could be terribly wrong. In fact my instincts are very poor. IRL I am on the longest-known Rock-Paper-Scissors losing streak in modern history. And if I am wrong bio K9 --and I haven't forgotten that I actually do owe you money-- I will be grievously sorry, and I will lay flowers on your grave and weep to no end.

Kill bioK9.

For the record I should probably point out that I can't be Mafia, as when my landlady was so gruesomely murdered, I was puffing my way out of my snowlocked car up on a Huggles ravine. Plus I can't stand the sight of blood. Unless it's my own.

Whoops - did I say that out loud?

Ahem ... anyway, are we in the pub yet? If so I'd like a beer please. None of your fancy Mafia red wine for me, no siree. I'm buying - what's everyone else having?

(This should be telling)

Lionheart

Persephone: I should've said that I suspect everybody no matter what they say. But now I suspect Sax much more than anything (and why I'm lobbing accusations at him) is because he started the game of acting like he is mafia and so far he hasn't refuted this.

But there are 3 mafia in all so I gotta watch my back in case I'm wrong or they want revenge.

My dogs are missing. Sax mentioned that he had some puppy pudding. All I really wanted was to know what happened to my dogs. And now...

Persephone has revealed my suspicions about Lionheart.

"Have you noticed there are quite a few people missing from the town? I think Lionheart is involved..."

At the time Lionheart was directing accusations of guilt towards Sax and Persephone and asking silly questions about the orgin of the mafia...as if he didn't know. Seemed suspicious to me.

As does that pyromaniac union rep from Mount Huggles. I'm sure you all know what they say about that place...

But, for now, I cast my gaze towards that sweet >>cough<< innocent >>cough<< granny that seems sooo concerned with the truth. And wants my innocent ass on a slab.

er...at 14:00 that is. Yes, accuse at 14:00. Bah! But who needs premature accusations? Lionheart is clearly guilty. Um....possibly...

bio k9
06:43 / 08.01.03
Oh yeah, this:

Have you noticed there are quite a few people missing from the town?

was just referring to the fact that half the townsfolk had failed to make an appearance.

Sax
07:35 / 08.01.03
I didn't deny I was mafia because I was too dumb to realise I was being accused directly, and I was labouring under the impression that in Toddsylvania people were innocent until proven guilty. Obviously those lobbing the accusations have some pretty funny ideas about law and order and justice, Mr so-called Lionheart...

And I would think it a little strange that someone so free with their accusations would innocently enquire if people know whether they're detectives, mafia or villager... as if he didn't know.

Hmm indeed.

Sax shakes head and wonder what he's done to upset people around here

Although it also strikes me as pretty odd that Tez has been making a big show of not knowing the rules... because if he didn't actually know them, he'd obviously NOT be mafia...

a complicated double-bluff, perhaps?

I'm not sure...

still keeping a wary eye on Lionheart and keeping my door locked...

Just wondering, oh not-at-all-suspicious Mayor, what time does the voting go on till? Cos I may not be able to vote until tonight. I have stuff to do this afternoon/evening. All very above-board legal stuff, you understand. Just... stuff .

***The voting will go on til everyone has voted. Once. This time, I'll only count votes cast after 14:00 b-time (or if you jump the gun a little, those too). I picked this time because it's 8am for me on the East Coast of the US, and I figured it would be early afternoon for those in the UK (I don't know the ~precise~ time diff., being lazy). If it's a bad time, post in the other thread or PM me with suggestions.***

Everyone was so eager to lob accusations when it didn't count, but no one wants to be the first now, eh?

****Drums fingers impatiently****

Let's hurry up and kill someone so I go spend a comfortable night in bed with Mrs. Mayor in my nice, mafia-proof home.
