G'night, Bengali.

Webcomic. Oooooh! Am intrigued. How's the leadup to classes been, too, Maz?

Mazarine
23:39 / 21.01.03
Oh, the webcomic was so shortlived, I felt cool for all of seven seconds. : / The lead up's been okay, I only have one class, but my work schedule's been modified around it. I was going to go buy a new notebook till I realized that they charge about nine dollars for the good plasticky covered ones at staples and decided back to school shopping was perhaps nay so big a deal. I'm all antsy though, it's my very first grad class, and it's in Ancient Greek theater, and I'm worried I've forgotten everything I ever knew already and what if all the other kids are smarter than me, and the usual back to school twitchiness. But Buffy's on, and that always makes me feel good about any shallowness. God I'm hyper. It's the cold and the girl scout cookies.

I'm so glad you're happy today, Roth, I've been fretting about you.

Maz: Don't stress. Ancient Greek theatre's an absolute piece of piss. If in doubt, it's about the relationship of God and men. If in further doubt, tell the Euripides-Eumenides joke.

(don't try this at home, kids)

Mazarine
23:49 / 21.01.03
That's the thing- Ancient Greek theater was entirely my bag in college. I'm just worried I've lost my touch.

Jesus. It must be Good Rothkoid Day today: my weblog's up for an award this year. Not that I've won anything in the past three years I've been nominated, but HEY!

Odd stuff.

I'm off to bed. Thanks to all of you, congrats to Roth, and thanks to Haus for the advice. How the hell does that Euripides-Eumenides joke go again?

Euripides trousers, Eumenides trousers.

Urgh.

I don't suppose anyone's around, are they? (Actually not sure how many posts I have left, but never mind). I'm still up and still annoyed and I STILL haven't finished my paper...

Insomnia is your friend, it seems. I am working too, ve-e-e-e-ery slowly. Brain melting. sorry I didn't reply to your PM, btw - mod stuff sort of took over all my barbetime today.

how goes the great work?

Miserably - stuck on about 5,500 words at the moment (not including footnotes and - annotated - bibliography with catalogue numbers and editions and fancy stuff like that). It was meant to be about 5,000, but I haven't addressed the most important stuff yet and unfortunately I can't just leave it out... Looking forward to the part where Mad Charles Leslie accuses the Dutch of starting teh Great Fire of London though.

S'OK about the PM, it didn't require a reply really, did it? Don't think it did...

How's the work?

I am trying to bring something down to 400 words, which ois provong frustrating. My brain is fried. I have been unable to slep before 3 or 4 all week. Must try to get an early night tomorrow, at least...

Pah. Can you have any more posts?

I'm just back from lunch. We were bought lunch by the editor as a thankyou for doing all the work we did over Christmas. So I never need to eat again, found out that someone else in the office is heading to Kraftwerk tonight, and also heard a rumour about Rolf Harris and kiddie porn from the pre-internet days.

In all, a good luncheon!

And now, I'm listening to Joel Silbersher's album, and wondering who's up.

So what happened with mad Charles Leslie, anyway? That's a new one on me...pamphleteer?

Kit-Cat Club
02:24 / 23.01.03
Yes, he's a pamphleteer - rabid Jacobite one. I don't think he's actually insane, but he's rather like Thomas Carlyle - very perfervid prose. It's too long and convoluted, but he basically reckons that the States General supported and gave money to some conspirators who were caught plotting to storm the Tower of London and overthrow the king, and that they said there was a plan for a fire on the 2nd of September 1666, and lo and behold there was a fire which started in the early hours of the 3rd. Bit bonkers really. This is the sort of thing:

'How far the Devil's Chain may reach, I cannot tell. But if there be such a thing as Spells, to cause Men Love or Hate; most certainly the Dutch have made us drunk with it: Not only to Love and Dote upon them, who, at this very Day, use all our Men like Doggs...'

Interestingly, I've heard the same Rolf Harris rumour - as well as 'reliable info' that Frank Skinner's on that list too. Hmm...

The Return Of Rothkoid
02:30 / 23.01.03
Well, the Rolf one I heard involved some people who'd broken into his house, found it and were going to use it to blackmail him. To which he responded with some pretty convincing mafia death-stylee threads.

Who knew?

As long as it's not Johnny Ball or Brian Cant.

Johnny Ball and brian Cant, horrifyingly, were the models in th ephotos. All the furniture was oversized...

Got to love pamphleteer prose. Knox's first blst of the trumpet against the monstrous regiment of women is still, I think, my favourite. There was a man with so many issues that he shoudl have been Carrie's dad.

Can I just point out what's possibly the best thing ever? Just read Popbitch and have discovered that porn star Jeff Stryker has recorded an album of country tunes. Including one called "Pop You In The Pooper". MP3s here. It's fucking genius!
