Late Shift 6: Into the Future

The year is 2003, the small but rainforesty nation of Logardiere is thriving, the Late Shift is recreated to become number 6.

So it's thirteen minutes past twelve in the small village of Chorleywood, the claws of the cat are the only sound ringing through the otherwise silent house of Anna de Logardiere. Barbelith has come to a standstill and I'm quite hungry. How are YOU?

Surrounded by voices I can't quite hear, photocopiers moans in agony behind my ear ... that wasn't supposed to rhyme.

Oh, and skiving off from reading newspapers which I should be doing. Fascinating "I'm too small to satisfy her" Dear Deirdre stuff in The Sun.

Oh dear that sounds a bit unfortunate. Well I am drinking earl grey tea and still calming down from stupid lengths of time spent in a car. It was the annual seven-hour round trip to visit grandparents today.

I'm good - but had a fat curry and a spliff, and then tried to do visualisation exercises lying on my bed which resulted in me falling asleep for an hour and a half and will thus be up all night, making me late for work tomorrow. I knew I should have left the exercises and just chilled the fuck out and watched "Independence Day".

Note: When I say "fat curry" I mean a large curry with Peshwari naan and rice, not simply "currried fat".

Hiya folks!

Peshwari nann! Dead tasty with raisins and nuts and stuff? mmmm. dinner was too long ago.

illmatic
22:49 / 02.01.03
Peshwari naan was indeed very nice - no raisins though, just dessicated coconut. Curry was a Rogan Josh with mad hot whole green chillies, roasted my mouth but that was part of the fun.

Why am I telling you this - who cares? How're your grandfolks? Anyone else about?

Sigh.

I'm at work, and morose. As ever. Fucking predictable, no?

Listening to Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space probably doesn't help, either.

Mine are all dead, thanks Mr Ill.

and I've just had lunch... one of those cardboard pizzas, slightly burnt at the edge.

Damn people I was hungry enough already without all this naan/pizza talk. Now I must add food to the White Russian floating in my stomach!

Some people enjoy food porn, so why not? I really like curry and I really like rogan josh so that's fine by me.

Grandparents... old. Ill. It's a bit sad really. We're going to try and get them to live nearer us than over 3 hrs drive away.

Sorry MM - so are mine. Only met one of 'em, she used to live in the flat below us. All I remember about her is she used to give us sweets every morning- very Hansel and Gretel. And related to power struggles with her and me mum which I was unaware of at the time.

Harmony - sorry to hear yours are ill, hope they move close soon.

Food umm -May have to get myself a bit of toast.

mixmage, what was on your pizza? Was it ...pepperoni? No ham, no onions, no mushrooms, just ...pepperoni?

Fuck. I want one.

Fucking disaster - no bread.

I've never been close to my grandparents, my father's died when he was a teen, and my mother's live(d) in Kangersuatsiaq, too far up north for us to visit them more than 2 times. Expensive. Her father died a couple of years ago, and her mother has become senile; every time my mother calls my grandmother, she always says that I had just called her and that I am in Nuuk. Which was this summer.

Which reminds me, she tells that there is no ice on the water, quite the anomaly. With snow outside my very window, I'm beginning to think that weather patterns are switching, and that my refuge from the snowy hell has been a mistake... Oh well.

Funny isn't it, the talk of grandparents seems appropriate to this late hour.

Whaddya mean Chrome - some sort of global warminng effect?

yes... it was pepperoni. Now get away from me you scary psychic!

Mr Ill - np, bud. It was years ago. I stoped whining and adapted.

Seems to be - global warming effect, I meant. If I remember correctly, the same thing is over on the east, no ice near Ammassalik? I think.

I was reading something about global warming being the clue to the advent of the next ice age the other day but I don't understand these things- they make my poor little brain ache- particularly anything to do with the atmosphere. I'm much happier with clothes, books and the placement of knives and forks on a table... a skill I shall learn properly when I am an ambassador's wife and hold dinner parties.

Ah, back in to the realms of fantasy I descend.

Madame Ambassadeuse, with these late-night thoughts you are really spoiling us!

Sorry couldn't resist it. And now I want a Ferrero Rocher.

Oh we had some of those earlier in the week but then I ate them. Hahahahahahahahaha!

I hate Cauliflower Cheese. Cheese, yum, cauliflower is just wrong though! Still, enjoy your meal, don't let me put you off!

Btw, anyone care to reveal an in depth knowledge of Sylvia Plath's 'Daddy' to me?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Hmm. I'd have to wait until I'd taken my medication for the day before I dare to venture into Plathland.

Not a surprise but I appear to have a problem, no one can decide if the poem is about her father or if it happens to be half dedicated to her husband. Never mind... I'll start on it tomorrow because it's time for me to retreat from the internet and descend in to sleepytime.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Imagery in Sylvia Plath's "Daddy". Not categorical, but somewhere to jump off, I spose.

Thanks Rothkoid, I've bookmarked it, I think I'm getting a handle on it all now.

I wrote an essay on 'Daddy' once about ten years ago - if by some miracle I can find it I'll put it on here for you. If not ... don't worry, it probably wasn't that good anyway.

I've been eating pretzels, mustard and margarine, and I just opened my fifth Becks Oktoberfest of the day. That's over about eleven or twelve hours, though. And Cartoon Network is on. Old Tom and Jerry right now.

I'm not exactly enthused with life right now, but I'm sure I'll live.

I want a new computer. I've had this one for three or four months, and I spilt beer on it and it's not working quite right. The scary thing is that I might actually go and buy one, too.

Spilling beer I can relate to! Plath, on the other hand...

I know Noootheeeng!

Anna: there's a reply in the Q&A thread, also...

Spilling beer? That's coming up in about an hour-and-a-half...

Dagnabbit! All I've got is two bottles of decent red wine. Can we deal with spilling that first?
