An opportunity for reasoned self-reflection? Ah, your youthful naivete makes me chuckle fondly.
No, after a brief frisson of discomfort, the party line on the "reasonable" Right is the usual "one bad apple" defense. On the wingnut Right, though—where conspiratorial thinking is the default mode—it's far more sickening / entertaining: before the bodies were cold, there was already rumblings that this was a secret liberal plot to undermine the glorious conservative movement! The evidence? The shooter was an atheist! And also on public assistance!
The lengths people go to in the avoidance of cognitive dissonance... You can't make this stuff up, and you wouldn't want to. The coverage at the humor site Sadly, No! has me laughing, and crying, and throwing up a little in my mouth. |
