That's fucked up. I wonder if O'Reilly and co will be as keen to blame the media for this shooting considering it's their branch of the media that this lunatic seems to been inspired by?

An opportunity for reasoned self-reflection? Ah, your youthful naivete makes me chuckle fondly.

No, after a brief frisson of discomfort, the party line on the "reasonable" Right is the usual "one bad apple" defense. On the wingnut Right, though—where conspiratorial thinking is the default mode—it's far more sickening / entertaining: before the bodies were cold, there was already rumblings that this was a secret liberal plot to undermine the glorious conservative movement! The evidence? The shooter was an atheist! And also on public assistance!

The lengths people go to in the avoidance of cognitive dissonance... You can't make this stuff up, and you wouldn't want to. The coverage at the humor site Sadly, No! has me laughing, and crying, and throwing up a little in my mouth.

I quite like Oasis. I like how they make me feel my face is symmetrical. They do a valued service in this regard.

Weird coincidence - I just read, that Noel Gonnagal was attacked in Toronto. Oasis had just started a concert, when from backstage came the attacker to push Noel to the ground. link

I'm against violence generally but when it's Oasis I think it's OK (It's Gallagher BTW).
Whiney bastards.

OH MY FUCKING GOD.

Okay, I'm an agnostic, and occasionally verge on the Christian, but listening to the Moral Maze with MELANIE FUCKING PHILLIPS attacking atheism is gonna destroy any faith in God I may still have.

BUT THE EARPLUGS. THEY DO NOTHING.

It's alright. I may not be able to stop listening, but even worse is my inability to leave a ringing phone. Fortunately someone called during the show and saved me. A bit like in Temple of Doom when Short Round hits Indy with the flaming torch.

And Zoe Williams is wise.

youtube announcement that the US military is deploying in October for civilian crowd control.

Verified via www.armytimes.com.

They may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios such as massive poisoning and chaos in response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or high-yield explosive, or CBRNE, attack.

So um, what happened to the Posse Comitatus Act?

Prepare for Shock Therapy. Mass arrests of subversive leftists. Pinochet style roundups, torture, and assasination. All blamed on "terrorism". While this is happening, laws enforcing free-market reform are pushed through guaranteeing the divide between rich and poor remains unbridgable. The troops are in country to ensure that all rioting from the unlawful financial shenanigans purpetrated by the Bushies are squelched.

Sorry. Getting carried away: Just finished Klien's book, and read too much Prison Planet, etc...

Still...

I apologise in advance... More Conspiracy...

Remember the Rodney King riots? I hesitate to post such wild speculation, but I imagine that a troop deployment such as this would be necessary if, say, a popular politician were "rubbed out"...

I am of the belief that if it's possible elsewhere in the world, it's possible in the US...

Vote Democrat! Vote NDP!

This quote from their commander can be read two ways, one distinctly chilling.

“I can’t think of a more noble mission than this,” said Cloutier, who took command in July. “We’ve been all over the world during this time of conflict, but now our mission is to take care of citizens at home ... and depending on where an event occurred, you’re going home to take care of your home town, your loved ones.”

Well, there are various exceptions to Posse Comitatus (or various ways for the President to get around it, I suppose). I don't think the use of troops on home soil is necessarily an automatically bad thing, either - remember that Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne to Arkansas to make sure that the Little Rock Nine could attend Little Rock Central High. That's not to say that it isn't rather worrying in this particular case, of course.

Why? I love /h enough to have stayed anyway.

And no, friends from the flipside, double murder homicide and mailbombs are not the answer. Grow the fuck up ? Or just sit there and play chess and ignore me like you're fucking kids. Fuck you, you make me sick.

Motherfucking Windows Live Hotmail not letting me read any of my emails in any browser except, you guessed it, Internet Explorer.

Even the name fucks me off. Say it with me... Windows. Live. Hotmail. Shit. For. Arseholes

Spaniel
20:11 / 14.01.09
Yeah, it works fine on my work Firefox set-up too.

I Googled the problem, seems as if the "upgrade" has affected many people in a similar fashion (or worse), and no-one appears to have any advice about what to do about it. Microsoft claim to have fixed lots of bugs, hence that irritating "you spoke, we listened" interstitial page, but the Internet is awash with people who have no idea where to turn for help (it would seem that Microsoft customer support is definitely not the answer).

Bloody annoying that Hotmail glitch. There's a ton of emails in my main account that, for one reason or another, I've wanted to hold onto. Now I can't read a single one of them.

Managed to reclaim a few from friends which had versions archived. But still, there's a lot that's gone.

Ah well, the risks of online email accounts I guess.

The solution is to stop using hotmail, forward your email (if it even lets you do that) or put a different reply-to email address in to every email you send from the account. Hotmail is a terrible, clunky, old-fashioned and extremely vulnerable system. I stopped using it completely a year ago after it started to refuse to let me access my account once a week but honestly I'd been using gmail for a lot longer and its spam filter is far more effective.

Spaniel
12:31 / 15.01.09
I know that's the solution, and I do have two other email addresses (one for work, one for Mindless Ones), the problem is the whole being unable to forward emails thing. But, yes, the straw, the camel's back, the rage = things must change

Gotta say, although it potentially puts me in the same boat, I have never had a problem with gmail...

Even if they read everything I write and try sell to me... I have gotten used to the fact that there is zero privacy on the internet and try be smart about the information I send ot the thoughts I send via email. The feds haven't come-a-knocking yet...

I recently thought about buying a new camera and discovered that I have to pay oodles more just for living in Germany. The Canon EOS 1000D goes for 448,99 € on amazon.de and for 364,34 € (341,47 £ postage included) on amazon.co.uk. And they won´t or can´t ship the camera to my address. It was the same story with the Lumix DMC-FZ28 I thought of buying, which is much cheaper on amazon.us and also won´t ship to me. And this annoys so much that I rather not buy at all than pay 84 € more. Grrr.

I have no idea how the prices within 'the western world' get to be what they are but there often seems to be a random unfairness to it all. Maybe you should just be a patriot and buy a Leica? I hear they make quite nice cameras.
