The Best Things Ever: A thread for unabashed positivity and love

Right. Time for a radical U-turn, I think. Inspired by the mystery of the non-conductive rat, this here si a thread for sharing the best things ever, the things that have recently made you jump up and down excitedly and giggle like a schoolgirl.

For example - a friend just told me that Bovril is called Bovril because of cows, obviosuly, "bo-", but then "vril" for Vril, the mysterious, powerful substance that oozes fromt he centre of the Earth in Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Age. Which, even if it isn't true, is indubitably the best thing ever.

Anyone else?

Ooh, nothing you can share I'm afraid, but I just have to deposit the thought of:

Caroline in a short skirt, as I saw her tonight. Rrr.

Sorry- not particularly funny, but the best thing in the world, bar none, in Stoatie's World (tm) is waking up from a REALLY bad dream, and seeing my dog in the room, sleeping peacefully. If the dog's okay, then all's right with the world, says I. And that's a wonderful way to start the day.

I got three kit-kats for $0.99 on the weekend. That's, like, 20p a kit-kat. Four fingers, too, none of your two finger rubbish.

And penguins. Think about penguins. Imagine you're lying on your bed, thinking "god, things can't get any worse" and then a whole load of penguins run through your room, flapping their little wings, and run out again. Wouldn't that make you smile? Just a bit? Well, I think it's a good thought.

It's a damn fine thought, fridge.

My happy thought for now regards how I just challenged the laws of physics, yes, just now, in packing my suitcase for the holiday.

Next--Time Travel!!! On the drive home for the holiday.

Telling my girlfriend my favourite joke for the 137th time. It involves Inspector Clouseau and a dog.

The only thing that's made me laugh harder than that recently is the bit in the Tenacious D video for Tribute where JB & KG say - we are but men. [rock!]

Oh, and buttered hoovers, obviously.

As this wonder of wonders was mentioned in the initial post, I offer this:

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germans who like to read on the toilet no longer need to take newspapers in with them, but can instead turn to novels and poems printed onto toilet paper, a German publisher said on Wednesday.

"We want our books to be used. That's our philosophy," said Georges Hemmerstoffer, head of the Klo-Verlag which publishes the toilet paper literature. About half of all people liked to read on the toilet, he said.

Poems by German literary giants Heinrich Heine and Christian Morgenstern, as well as tales and detective stories could be found on the toilet rolls, Hemmerstoffer told Reuters at the Frankfurt book fair.

Each text was printed several times on one roll, so that readers could actually use the paper and still leave behind some entertainment for the next toilet visitor.

It seems blasphemous to wipe oneself "Mit Deinen Blauen Augen," but hey, the poem will get a whole new exposure at least. That's gotta be a good and happy thought. Right?

I've just read an advance copy of the new Diana Wynne Jones novel (publication April 2003) and it's a fucking doozy.

That's a bit of a gloat, actually, so - instead of leaping up and down like a schoolgirl - allow me to flute in Stalky's boyish tenor: Ti-ri-la-la-i-tu! I gloat! Hear me!

Also, my brother is happier than he has been in a couple of years, and I like my brother.

I'm back to having mad dreams again which cheers me up in the morning in a confused sort of way, I had a dream I ate some magic mushrooms (magic in the occulty way) and travelled to a dimension made of chocolate muffins.

Also I had an excellent weekend in North London...

Hurrah for Deva's brother! More happiness always good.

I'm going to bowl in the fact that I have borrowed a copy of the complete (including lots of unpublished ones, it seems) Lord Peter Wimsey short stories and, although they lack the depth of scene-setting you get in the novels, and too often involve basic logic puzzles, they are pretty top so far.

Bonus points for the one where the Comte has to distinguish between two Lord Peter Wimseys, along with his disreputable cousin Death Bredon. And for the appearance of the ten-year old Viscount Gherkins. Kaloo! Kalay!

You RATBAG. I am SO jealous. I know that's not very fluffly or huggy, but you can't just drop traumatic things like that into the conversation...

Best things ever - going to Hsing I lessons tonight, a mid week highpoint that makes me feel like I'm learning loads about my body.
(and I have cunningly figured out that moving diagonally across my rather small room gives me more space to practice).

Going away to Nottingham this weekend to catch up with two of my best mates - talked to them both on the phone and can feel us already teetering over an abyss of endless conversation.

And I cooked Thai-style meatballs last night. Pretty damn nice! And then we watched "The Devils" on video - sex-crazed nuns and Oliver Reed! Does it get any better?

It certainly does: there was a documentary on John Dee and Edward Kelly sraight after - pretty camp for the most part, but it had Alan Fucking Moore in it, who's rapidly becoming this country's premier occultist. Much fun in the viewing!

The way my dog winks at me when its time for her medication. She's 13 which is pretty old for a doggy ad she's only started this winking thing recently. You have to see it to believe it. Looks really dodgy but funny.

It dioesn't. He talks about Dee. Part of a series of docs about famous occultists (all of them featuring some beardy commentary by Moore). Assuming I'm right and it's the series I'm thinking of.....

Wow. Moore is all over the telly. Just the other week there was a show where he talked about comics or something on at prime time. When I say prime time, what I mean is 4am.

But that's when I always watch telly.

I have a new job, I haven't started yet.. but am quite... excited? It's very novel for me. Oh, and I will get money. Which is also very novel for me.

I'm going to buy people presents! Hurrah!

Waking up next to a boy with ash-brown hair and blue eyes who giggles when I touch his toes.

Oh yes, he calls me "Mommy". That alone is enough to brighten my day.

All the things I can buy on Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EEEEEeeeehehhhhhhhhehhehhehehhe. Oh dear, how materialistic, must find something else. Erm. Nope there's nothing there except a knowledge that I will be able to buy something I actually want to read and Adorno can lie in a heap of rubbish because I will have something more fun to do! Yippeeee!

BTW I'm quite jealous, I wish I had dreams like bear's, I only ever dream of my old school and the dinner queue. That I don't understand at all.

Oh, hey, Kit-Kat, it's well worth the wait.

Or would have been, if I'd had to wait for it. Hee hee! (Hmmm. I'm not sure that gloating can be described as unabashedly positive, or loving. I shall stop now.

What else makes me happy? Actually, I'm having a really groovy day today. Two people with good reason to hunt me down & kill me have made friendly overtures; my supervisor loves my latest chapter; and the issue of parallax I themed is finally out! Huzzah! Look for it in the Tate Modern bookshop sooon: it has Hothead Paisan on the cover & the introduction mentions Transmetropolitan and the Ballad of Halo Jones.

Life is good.

Oh, where to start. Well, the cats brought in a mouse and killed it in my computer den this morning, which is not in itself really cause for celebration, but I suspect they're doing it as some kind of sacrifice to help the creative process, and besides, they're just so darn cute when they look up at me all pleased with themselves. Even the mouse looked cute, with its eyes closed in little cartoon-character crosses, its paws folded under its chin and its little teeth all sticking out. I gave it a proper burial in the wheelie bin with full rodent honours.

Then got into work to find loads of kudos for a new weekend supplement I put together, which launched on Friday. Didn't want to feel happy about being at work, but can't help it. Take it while it's coming, I suppose.

Then got a return e-mail from a big London literary agency saying they'd like to see the novel. I've heard that one before and it's come to nothing, but it still gives me a nice warm feeling.

And Mrs Sax is 14 weeks pregnant today. Which is extremely scary but really weirdly exciting as well.

Oh, and loads of other stuff.

According to VH1, Wayne Newton has a private stash of penguins on his estate. I was not in the room when this was shown on TV, but I was assured that Mr. Newton's wife swam in the pool with the penguins. Something to aspire to, I imagine.

Well if I can put my dream reading hat on for a second, maybe your a little worried about your future? Remembering a time when things were comfortable and easy and you didn't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

Actually thinking about school dinner queues is making me happy, some of my best school days were in that queue, usually getting sent to the back of the line for singing the Milkshake Men" song me and my mate made up.

We used to refer to the dinner ladies collectively as 'The Dinner Dames'. Individualy they were: 'Dame du Dejeuner', 'Dame du Death' (or 'Dead Dame') and, worst of all, 'The Mal Dame'. We'd have great larks dodging the baleful gaze of Dame du Death and sneaking past the tills, unpaid for iced buns tucked up our sleeves....

Happy days.

I've just started on my novel. But the sun's come out and so I'm torn between carrying on and walking on the beach for a while. A wonderful dilemma. And apparently I'm going to get a fair bit in benefits - as far as I'm concerned, I'm now a professional writer.

Anyway, this thread isn't a celebration of my heteronormative kow-towing to the population explosion which is causing me to stare bankruptcy in the face. It's supposed to be about your fun things as well.

But thank you for the kind words. Sometimes you amaze me, Barbelith. In a lovely way.
