Yay! Unexpected Cam goodness! I like the spideyDOC the best, he looks very cute, although thats probably because you can't see the grimace he's pulling under the mask. I want one.

On a slightly fannish note, I always love Cam's inking style, it's just so solid and detailed. The pencils are nice too, but they're never ruined by crappy inks.

Haha! I'm glad everyone digs this, I've been waiting for it to be unleashed on the world - I actually drew this cover back in May!

Believe it or not, it was actually a small battle to get this approved - when I sent in the rough it was initially rejected because editorial wanted the "normal" Avengers on the cover (for brand recognition or blah blah blah). Eventually though common sense prevailed and I got to do the hideous MODOK Avengers.

>>On a slightly fannish note, I always love Cam's inking style, it's just so solid and detailed. The pencils are nice too, but they're never ruined by crappy inks.<<

Hey thanks, but to clarify, I actually don't even pencil any more. Most of my drawing is done directly in ink, lightboxed over my rough layouts. Occasionally I'll use pencil to define something if it's very loose in the layout and I'm nervous about screwing it up but for the most part the pencil stage has become a waste of time...

Thanks again everyone!

There is a MODOC'S 11 miniseries coming up from the folks at Marvel (think "Ocean's Eleven), with our big-headed boy setting up a big team of Marvel villains to pull a major heist. What a weird concept.

Thanks!

Although, and I'm gonna get mopey for a moment, it's a bit disheartening to see that my silly one-off drawing of the Avengers as MODOK has seemed to generate more enthusiasm and discussion than the Vertigo miniseries I've poured my heart into for the last year.

Mope mode over.

This thread is as much about the comics forum as a community as it is about MODOK

The Other Side is just a rather good comic so consequently it gets less action. Doesn't mean it isn't greatly appreciated.

i don't think he look comical enough in that, i would like to see something more like a big eyed manga modok statue, should anyone have the time, tho unlikely to be as awesome as those avenger modoks, unless cameron was to do a tony blair one, as a commission maybe?

I will say, I'm a little bit miffed that I don't care at all about any of the figures in that M.O.D.O.K. line, so I can't even begin to justify buying them to assemble His Headiness. Ah well. I really didn't need to become one of those grown-ups who buys toys anyway.

Also, yes, Cameron, THE OTHER SIDE is seriously good comics, don't be concerned. M.O.D.O.K. just touches a part of the nerd lizard-brain that's easier to write about (as opposed to what touches the "sophisticated historical fiction" part).

The Other Side is a fairly straightforward comic (which isn't to say simple), and I think demands less rigourous dissection with only one issue under its belt; I expect more will come with #2 when it's out. As it's, you know, intelligent, it's harder to have a pure old geekgasm about it on first sight. I'm quite enjoying it so far. The gun creeps me out.

MODOK, on the other hand, is a long standing cultural institution tracing it's lineage back to one Jebediah Q. M.O.D.O.K., wot came up from the depths of the ocean to tame a continent and start a grandoise civilization and/or publishing company.

Due to company wide expansion, me and some of the people I work with are moving to a new satelitte office just down the road. We've had a new server installed for the new office, and our network maintenance peeps asked what we wanted it to be called.

Being an office full of professional geeks, we called it MODOK.

I'm quite looking forwards to turning to my designer and asking "Say, Timmy, did you remember to back-up the latest files onto the MOBILE ORGANISM DESIGNED ONLY FOR KILLING!!!!!!!" (In a suitably high-pitched manic squeal, obviously...)

If I ever finish my S.C.U.K.A. (Self-Contained Underwater KILLING Apparatus) minicomic, I'll have to send it to Marvel and ask for (nay DEMAND) a contract for a 12-issue S.C.U.K.A. vs M.O.D.O.K. limited series to be printed on foil-embossed, holographic pages that, when complete (and assembled according to blueprints distributed telepathically), will cause everyone in the universe to simultaneously dance.

Jeff Parker (writer/artist of THE INTERMAN) is writing a MODOK arc for the children's AVENGERS book, and he had this to say in a Wizard interview:

>> And understanding the motivation of MODOC was of primary concern for the writer, who had to tweak the giant head’s name ever so slightly for the all-ages title.

“It’s normally MODOK, with the final letter standing for Killing,” explained the writer. “They said, ‘You can’t have him kill because it’s all-ages.’ So what I did was go with the spelling that originally substituted a C, for Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing. Of course, that didn’t seem scary enough, so we’re not using Computing, but Conquest.”

*lol* Computing & conquest, not killing. Love that. Brubaker had his MODOCs 'designed only for Combat' over in a recent Captain America arc (around issue 8 or so).

This is the story arc that Cameron did a cover for, right? (with all-MODOK versions of the Avengers)

There are no arcs; it's one issue. And it's not just for kids. I can't wait to buy it, because the preview was hilarious and awesome. And yeah, Cam did the cover.

In other MODOK news: I proclaimed yesterday to be MODOK dayover at Comics Should Be Good.

>> Remember that lady friend I mentioned, though? That’s right. MODAM (Mental Organism Designed for Aggressive Maneuvers). She and MODOK should get together and make some MOBABIES.

Nice one! Mo' better, mo' babies.

And is that Ernest Borgnine as MODOK in that one 'fusion' picture?

I just read the new Marvel Adventures: Avengers issue to my son at bedtime last night. He's 6 and he knows all about Modok apparently. I thought I'd have to expain who he was, but nope. Right away, when he sees Cam's cover he laughs and says, "They're all MODOKs!!!" He learned about Modok by playing the Ultimate Alliance videogame it turns out. (I played it a bit, but he's already beaten the game, so he's seen all the villains).

Anyway, if you haven't gotten the issue, here's a teaser. The AVENDOCs ridicule classic Hulk villain The Leader for his puny brain. Then WOLDOC falls out of his hoverchair--you'll see why when you read the issue.

It's just too bad the interior art's not as good as that stellar cover.
