from Lying in the Gutters this week:

>> EVERYONE'S MAD ABOUT MODOK

Two weeks ago, I linked to the Journal Of MODOK Studies and I'm told it resulted in a "LOT" of orders. So much so that the publisher has had to go back to print and tells me orders will be fulfilled by Last Gasp this week. Oh, and there's another issue out for Christmas.

And now back to non-Rich Johnston stuff - I skimmed one of the M.O.D.O.K. issues of Cap & The Falcon recently (the latest one), which features our big-headed boy flying around shooting at Cap, going "DESIGNED ONLY FOR KILLING / DESIGNED ONLY FOR KILLING / DESIGNED ONLY FOR KILLING" to sound like a badass. At one point Cap says to himself, "Hey, the real MODOK had more of a vocabulary than this! Maybe this isn't the real MODOK!" At the end, MODOK seemingly exchanges brains with some waiter dude or suddenly appears in the form a tall thin guy with a slightly bigger head than usual (less than Hulk's The Leader and more like the DC villian Psimon), saying while floating in mid-air, "DESIGNED ONLY FOR KILLING"

Christopher Priest's writing has kind of sucked (or at least been mediocre) ever since the end of his Black Panther run. And I say that as someone who absolutely *loved* his Black Panther right up until issue 50. Quantum & Woody was fun too, many moons ago.

Next issue of Cap & The Falcon apparently has the MODOK origin we've been promised.

Wow. They still write comics this bad, huh?

How can you fuck up a M.O.D.O.K. story?!

>> THE STORY: "Brothers & Keepers (Adelphoite Phylaxes)"
Cap tracks MODOK to his secret lair but discovers the unexpected: MODOK doesn’t know him! Time’s running out! What’s happened to MODOK and, ethically, should Cap do anything about it? Meanwhile, the Falcon has gone AWOL in mid-mission, leaving Cap and the Anti-Cap to settle the score once and for all! Part 4 (of 5).

PRICE: $2.99

Priest's writing, which I used to love in the early Black Panther and Quantum & Woody days, has really gone downhill. Anti-Cap!??! Please. But there's MODOK for those of you who care.

I've really been digging Preist's CAP and FALCON, actually. And while the summary given sounds kind of lame, it's really much better executed. Cap is running around doing spy stuff while trying to deal with the Office of Naval Intelligence whose head created a new Cap (who looks a lot like Bucky) while Falcon is reverting back to his old banger/hustler personer.

Wow, that sounded lame too...

Errr.... it really is a lot better than it sounds.

You know what that means! RED HERRING! "Gah-Lak-Tus" is really space-alien-speak for "Mobile Organism Designed Only for Killing!" Time to get excited!

in marvel boy there was a few of them, 'sink-gods' or something, basically retro planet-eating angryyoungmen sef-pitifully whingeing about the injustice of a universe where dinner means six billion dead.

i reckon those three are the machines that he uses, little more than cosmics saucepans really.

Anyone see the new M.O.D.O.C.s in Captain America "Winter Soldier" this month?

A bunch of faceless robot soldiers all wearing MODOK headbands. Cap makes short work of them before Bucky shows up.

But did they have huge heads? If there are no oversized noggins they're not worthy of the M.O.D.O.C(K). moniker.

rabideyemovement

No, they have pitifully small heads and travel by walking rather than flying chairs. They're not true M.O.D.O.K.s.

Blasphemy. I'm glad Cap gave 'em a good smiting. They were pretenders to the name of M.O.D.O.K.

Come to think of it, the M.O.D.O.C.s were suspiciously O.M.A.C.-like.

Which, by the way, stands for "Only Mohawks Are Cool." In case you were wondering.

We know where his right hand is. His left is suspiciously invisible behind the Black Widow's as...back. The Black Widow's back.

MODOK's got some Natasha in the oven, it seems.

Aside: Giant MODOK-Galactus head...is Ultimate Galactus not humanoid anymore?

Yeah the 'm' was for multiple. One mind, lotsa bodies.

I got excited when I read the word MODOC, but thereafter it was a big letdown.

Has anyone mentioned Micah 'Soldier' Wright's proposal for 'Joe A.I.M.' here? He was gonna have the guy bottle-feeding baby MODOKs iirc. Sounded alright.

First of all, this thread defies the Barbelith search function. very odd.

Second, Wizard has a nice Grant interview this month, where it's basically GM getting the interviewer progressively more drunk and tired, and hanging around being wacky. It's a good read, but the salient quote is:

"Where's the new? demands Morrison as he pours his third tall glass of Red Bull and Vodka. "Where are the new characters? Where's the new M.O.D.O.K.? Creating something as cool as M.O.D.O.K. - that's something to accomplish. That what I want to do. Now that movies are doing comics, comics should do comics, only bigger and more fantastic."

FinderWolf
15:21 / 03.11.05
Does the interview with Grant cover anything specific? Is it promoting his big DC book, like 52*?
