A couple of fiction contest winners:

“A single sparkling tear fell from Little Mary’s cheek onto the sidewalk, then slid into the storm drain, there to join in its course the mighty waters of the Los Angeles River and, eventually, Long Beach Harbour, with its state-of-the-art container-freight processing facilities.”

“Despite the vast differences in their ages, ethnicity, and religious upbringing, the sexual chemistry between Roberto and Heather was the most amazing he had ever experienced; and for the entirety of the Labour Day weekend they had sex like monkeys on espresso, not those monkeys in the zoo that fling their faeces at you, but more like the monkeys in the wild that have those giant red butts, and access to an espresso machine"

That pic gives me a happy upgrade, and so does the George Bernard Shaw quote I found;

Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.

Much better than all the kangaroo nonsense going around.

After a worrying absence of a month or so, my lavender is covered in bees! My garden is once again a sleepy sunlit puddle of buzzing bumblebees and honeybees and this gives me a quite stratospheric happy.

That picture reminds me of a dream I had last Friday night. I don't remember the details but I do remember waking up in the middle of the night thinking Fuck, must log on to Barbelith and warn Kali about the cybermen. Must have been a strange dream.

I have discovered that my management technique is wrong in all the ways I'd like it to be.

I have to conduct appraisals of my minions, and, as this is a fairly new introduction to the way things work, had my Shift Leader sit in on my first one last night, and then talk to me afterwards about how it went. He said it all went well, but his only real criticism was that I shouldn't really have joined in when the guy starting complaining about wages and the bonus scheme, and I especially shouldn't have started telling him other ways in which the company's policy on such things was a bit rubbish.

This makes me feel good about myself.

Barbelith gives me a happy. Everything is the same as it was last week, last month. Someone is being a lunkhead, someone is making witty rejoinders to lunkheadedness, someone is taking that lunkheadedness and raising it by a thousand. While at any other time this would frustrate me, right now I am sick and alone in a seaside paradise far away from home, feeling very small, and the sameness gives me a huge happy.

Yay Barbelith.

that tiger face is rad.

Currently making me happy beyond what it should, like:
(Warning, shameless self promotion ahead)
my new webcomic, which is made to investigate the human ability to make narratives out of unconnected events, amongst other things, is providing some (2) beautiful examples of things which look like they must have been made with a meaning in mind, but really, weren't. That makes me very happy indeed! (i.e. the current comic [the second ever] is really great, in my head. discussion here)

Further to Haus's Athena upgrade above, it amuses me to learn that Marrakech gayers' main online contact site (and this is very probably not work-friendly, folks) rejoices in the name cybermen.com.

Hehe, Red Frog - your comic is thought-provoking, interesting and entirely pointless.

I love it.

First day at my new job today and I got a tour of the warehouse. 10,000,000 (ten million) books. That's a lot of books. (Apparently that's nothing - the warehouse in the US is the size of several football fields.) No, I haven't had the chance to read them all yet.

The other great thing about my job - apart from BOOKS! BOOKS EVERYWHERE! AND I MIGHT EVEN GET ACCESS TO SOME PRETTY COOL E-ARCHIVES! - is that I can now tell people that I'm in publishing. No-one needs to know that I'm an accountant who works for a publishing company. Right?

Hi, my name is mice and I'm in publishing.

I think I love my new job.

It's mango season again. I have got juice all down my arms and all over my face and all over my hands twice today. I need to put them in a salad next. With chilli. Mmmm.

After ten years without a record deck, my dogsitter's boyfriend (who's really into finding stuff in skips, and mending it if it's electrical) has hooked me up a proper stereo! AND AND AND AND AND while digging through a bunch of boxes of stuff to clear a path to my vinyl collection, which I thought I had no use for, I've found loads of cool stuff I thought I'd lost! My Joy Division box-set, my Invader Zim T-shirt... loads of clothes I assumed had got lost last time I moved...

OK, it's a materialistic happy, but a happy nonetheless.

Today I cracked open the metric ton box of art gear sat in my room and found I can still paint! Woo!

Discovered some nifty DIY watercolour postcard card. First painting in over a year: watercolour of a sun conure inspired by Olulabelle's boid Fawkes. I thought: hey it just primary colours in a bird shape, even I can do that surely.

Those are damnably cute kids, CCOAH.

Personally, despite London being beastly hot, new mattress. New, gloriously unpointy mattress. Why has it taken me five years to conclude that a pointy mattress is not really what you want in life, especially when among its selling points, so to speak, is "incrementally pointier".

Also, Mitch Pileggi was in Knight Rider 2001. I actually don't know what my emotional response to that is, but I think it might be happiness.

Yay for Magnums.

Triplets that is so cool. I opened this thread and saw a picture of what looked remarkably like Fawkes and then I read it and it found out it actually was Fawkes. Can you scan it? I'd love a copy if you can. Congratulations in your painting, and congratulations because you have inadvertently given me a happy too.

There is a garden just round the corner from me behind a museum building I'm sure must be abandoned. On the way to and, especially, from work I get the most utterly huge waft of lovely flower smells coming over the wall. I want to climb it. I think I might. I took a photo through a wrought iron keyhole on the thick wooden door.
Secret Garden
Actually, I've got a big happy realising I have an alarm clock and a ladder. Dawn raid going to happen in the next couple of weeks.

Got back from bicon

Wonderful. Probably one of the happiest times I can remember in my life. Topped by being presented on the last day with a Cake Award (given out to bi activists for their contribution)

Standing in front of people who'd come to feel like my family while they applauded me is a moment I'll never forget.

Triplets: love that painting - you seem to have captured the bird (artistically, I mean) without going into minute detail. Lovely job.

cube: I'm itching to find out whether you made the dawn raid or not. Lemme know. What did you find? Was it a disappointment or were you suddenly transported to a secret urban idyll?

oh, and

Haus: thanks for the lovely comment about my boys!

And thrice yayed.

Lidos give me a happy. Especially Hyde Park Lido on a record breakingly hot day, with it's tree shaded grass bank and the refreshingly chilly Serpentine to swim in when you start to feel a bit melty. Can't believe how many years I spent in London strugging with the heat before discovering this place.

They are something of an endangered species now so why not support public spaces and stay cool at the same time? Go on, you know it makes sense.

My friend and I nearly pissed ourselves laughing when we saw that at the Fringe last year. Then again, it was after an hour of being bombarded with lots more Buxton/Pavel humour. Good to know it's public domain now.

cube, thankyou, your keyhole picture gave me a intriguingly-mysterious urban place happy.
Also, there are vegetables growing in my back yard, right now. Courgettes and tomatoes, mainly. That makes me absurdly happy.

I do not have a yard, I have a garden. A lovely English garden (in Birmingham but still)and it also has growing things in it, including potatoes, chilli peppers, sweet peppers, little baby carrots, courgettes, tomatillos, tomatoes and pak choi and I agree Whistler, it does maketh one absurdly happy.
