Oh...no. Check out Bullseye.

And the kingpin....

wow, Bullseye=lamest looking villian ever.
what the hell is that on his head? did he lean over and hit his head on the electric stovetop?

He looks like an escapee from Mad Max. And when did the Kingpin get a pimpcane?

The pimpcane has been around for quite a while - it appears and disappears depending on who's writing and drawing the character. I'm sure MCD will make the character work, and I'd had hopes for Colin Farrell, but that picture does not make the outcome look good.

Anybody else have the urge to push the sections of Bullseye's head as if it were some squishy, organic Simon game?

(touches screen, makes boggy sounds)

Oh, man. Have just seen the teaser for this in front of Minority Report, and it looks pretty friggin' bad. Matt just looks pysically unbalanced, like everything is the wrong proportion. There's some footage of Elektra, Bullseye and the Kingpin, but not much. The shot of Bullseye is essentially the same as the pic I posted above. But the whole thing looks very second rate, very hack. Granted, the teaser didn't show much, but it seems to lack fluidity and grace, which are the two qualities Daredevil always suggested to me. I won't even get into the double 'D' logo written in flames on a parking lot.

The teaser took the "tv movie" feel away from me for a while. Then again, I'm afraid this can turn out to be one of those movies whose best scenes are in the trailers.

Still miffed with the Elektra black costume? Mark Steven Johnson explained things to Wizard a little and gives hope to those who want to see the bandana - "In our movie, Daredevil is already established and his red is intrinsic to his character," he says. "But Elektra hasn't turned into an assassin yet-it's more of an origin story for her. I wanted her costume to be one that would enable her to make that transition from Elektra Natchios into Elektra: Assassin. I wanted her to be able to slip in and out of the shadows in her search for Daredevil, and bright red sashes and headbands wouldn't allow for that. But in the future, once she's been established as a cold-blooded killer for his, I'd love to see her costume evolve into that of the comic character"

I think that Daredevil is an interesting character for basically two reasons. Firstly, the lawyer is perhaps the most interesting of secret identities as it allows stories to really focus on the difference between the law and justice, on due process vs vigilantism and a host of related issues. Combined with the image of "blind justice" there're some really nice metaphors which can be milked out of this stuff. And that all goes into good storytelling (at least, in the hands of a competent creative team).

Secondly, DD appeals to me as one of the very few overtly Christian characters in comics. (Who else can you count? Nightcrawler. Zauriel, sort of.) Unlike Spiderman he doesn't fight crime out of guilt. (I agree with Warren Ellis that this is a bit dodgy.) Unlike Batman he doesn't fight crime out of revenge. His motivations are more internal, more about trying to do what's right and less about trying to atone for or control something external. I just find that an appealing basis for a character.

Right. So the final trailer before it hits theatres next month has rolled out and though I'm only loosely familiar with the Daredevil mythos, this flick just looks campy as campy can be. The lines are terrible (esp. that last one of Colin Farrell's) and Affleck just can't pull off the gravely bad-ass voice to save his life. Though bless him he tries.

I'll probably go see it but it makes sense that Marvel has to flop with at least one of these blockbuster gambles. Le sigh.

Saw the trailer ...

My big reaction was 'Oh _damn_ there are too many characters in this.' I think it was the way that the trailer presented them - here's a neat superhero, BAM here's his civilian identity, BAM here's a woman assassin, BAM and here's a big mob boss and he hires, BAM a fella on a motorbike, and YES there will be a test on this. I felt a bit overwhelmed, like I did when the opening story recap for Episode 1 scrolled across the screen - "What? What the hell was that? Ah, no, I missed the first few details, I'm screwed." It would've been more effective if they'd played up Daredevil himself, all leaping and kicking and saving people and things.

And is it just me, or did Ben-as-Matt look a bit too ... trying-to-be-casual-sexy-unkempt to be a lawyer? I wasn't very convinced. Straighten out your hair, counsel!

Am I the only one who thinks DD's red eye slits are a little too far apart on that face mask? Or is that just how far apart Ben's eyes really are and they just sculpted the mask around his face?

I actually like the DD costume, by the way -- the Elektra one is not great, but let's face it, Garner looks terrific and is well-cast. As for how the movie will be, let's reserve judgment until it comes out. My instinct says it won't be great but could be more decent than most expect. We'll see.

No problem with the costume (apart from Chairman Maominstoat's prediction that in all that leather/PVC stuff the villains will be able to hear him coming from a mile off), it's more the casting I'm pissed off at. Should be Matt Damon if anyone, not Ben Affleck. But that's probably another thread.

I am ridiculously optimistic for this. I actually hope it will be better than Spider-Man, no matter what I glimpsed from the trailer.

Garner looks good for me. Farrell also. They would have looked ridiculous in their comic-book costumes, and I don't vow for exact transition of the tight costume, they usually loose credibility over an actor, even for Spider-Man -who in hell could sit down at home and come up with that gorgeous costume?? Only Alex Ross renders costumes as they should.

The one casting I doubt is the Kingpin, which I only hope they somehow manage to convey or substitute the impressive physical appearance the character has in the book.

>>>The one casting I doubt is the Kingpin, which I only hope they somehow manage to convey or substitute the impressive physical appearance the character has in the book. <<<

Wha-a-at? Can you think of any actor who's even close to the physical stature of Michael Clark Duncan? The man is a mountain, probably the only actor around who could pull off the Kingpin without having to have ridiculous prosthetics. Kingpin's undergone a change of skin colour but aside from that I think Duncan is very well cast.

It's the title character that seems the worst casting - poor Ben tries to do that gravelly menacing Batman voice but he just can't get it...

Hey, maybe they could have got a Sumo wrestler to play Kingpin. After all, he's a Sumo wrestler in the comic. Harold Sakata maybe, although he must be seventy or even dead - maybe his son or something. Of course they'd have to be an actor of some ability - blubbery corporate evil made flesh is not easy to convey convincingly.

While I think Duncan's a Fine choice... I worry about the portrail of a "black Businessman" as villian... but that's about it...

Not sure about the Gravelly voice either, though I was sort of amused by Aflick's portrail of Matt Murdock... though what can one say about the acting in a trailer...

At least with Cory Yuen's fight choreography, I'm hopeful for some Ass kicking fight action.

Uhm, aren't you all guys waiting to see THIS? I can't believe this thread has dropped so far. Well, in order to instigate your enthusiasm I picked the lines below from yesterday's Lying in the Gutters at Comicbookresources.com

RED SUIT WARNING

This weekend, a bunch of comics pros got a preview of the upcoming "Daredevil" film.

I must admit, the trailer, with its Graig-Weich style voiceover about justice didn't exactly win me over. But I've always preferred to hear about the final product. Well, according to these guys, it didn't exactly go down well.

"Abandoning character" moments included Daredevil letting a bad guy die in the first twenty minutes, Daredevil kissing Elektra, hearing a crime taking place but deciding to ignore it. The scene in a park where Matt and Elektra meet is described as a bad dance number, with the rather skeevy impression that she's basically just beating on a blind man. The characterisation has been described as "cookie cutter," and there's at least one example of "unbelievable adrenaline" when Daredevil is badly injured so he's unable to stop one character being killed, but is so enraged by the death that he has the energy to cross town and take on the two major bad guys. The conclusion? "X-Men" was like "Godfather II" compared to this…

Conclusion? It's a kids movie... but not a good one. But then, you know, "Maid In Manhattan" made money...

Oh, I'll see it anyway.

I'd like to reiterate that my biggest complaint so far is Joe Pantaleano's stupid cap. Did he write it into his contract or something? What's with these middle-aged Hollywood dildos and their backwards newsie caps? They look moronic.

Um, irony /\

I, worryingly quite like the look of this. But I look the look of all the upcoming superhero movies. That said; Hulk could suck if the Hulk isn't good enough and there isn't enough Connelly; this could suck because the camp-quotient in the trailer could go up as well as down. X2 is not in any way going to suck and will be the best thing ever.

But the production design doesn't look quite so lame as the original shots of Affleck's get-up made me think it might. It's about at a similar level to Spiderman, I'd say. The fights could also kick ass. And Jennifer Garner. I'm going to have difficulty not going to see this, but am aware that of the "big three", it's most likely to suck. At least Ang Lee can direct people and Bryan Singer can direct superhero movies.

And I hate Ben Affleck with a passion. I note the costume lets him show off his chin well.

COLIN FARRELL TALKS 'DAREDEVIL'

Q: Did you ever feel like you were in danger of going over the top?

CF: Absolutely. I thought I was doing it every day and I saw the film and I'm like, "Oh my God, I'm ridiculous." But you do the work and you do the best you can and try and hope that somebody will think it's OK.

Well, at least the guy appears to have a healthy sense of humor, outside the film, of course.

I think Affleck's get-up is quite sexy. And I hasten to add that I am not a leather/PVC fetishist. But then I think Darth Vader's Imperial Guard (the chess-piece looking guys in red) are quite sexy...so there's probably something wrong with me.

Okay, learned yesterday this piece is coming to town in March, so you guys will probably see it before...

Anyway, just seen some downloadable Scenes from Daredevil. I recommend the Farrel-Garner one, "Elektra vs. Bullseye". As I anticipated in my innards, Farrel has got it mad and nicely, very comic-book, very, very, very comic-book, to my taste at least, and its obvious the director shamelessly relishes on comic books. And, oh my, she's beauti-fucka-gorgeous-full, yaargh!

And, well... Affleck... Affleck won my first prize for the lamest costumed actor since dwarfy Michael punny Keaton, its a shitty pricky shame they pick such actors, but, well, as much as I hit my head in the walls and repeat as a prayer the "whys" such people is casted, there is no consolation... none at all.

I've been as skeptical as most about this film based on the casting and the various previews, but over the last few days it's gotten mostly rave advance reviews on the comic and film sites, and I'm suddenly feeling cautiously optomistic. Figure I'll maintain my relatively low expectations when heading out to see it, but I'm no longer expecting it to bomb.

I've heard that the movie is actually quite decent. Perhaps it will be far better than expected.
