Now I'm actually astonished that (since Art and Design) no one has actually really suggested the addition of a forum of any kind for months! But it occurs to me that that's no reason for complacency. So if you could add a forum about something - anything - what would it be. This does not have to be a serious thread, but all good ideas will be treated seriously.

I wanna pirate forum! We can discuss grog recipes, keelhauling, the best places to bury treasure, all those piratical things!

Seriously though, what about something like a martial arts forum? It comes up every once in awhile. It could be a forum for the discussion of yoga, martial arts, exercise and health; you know physical stuff.

i think a forum on video/rpg type games could be cool, call it The Playground and post on your electronic or real life fun time stuff that doesnt really fit anywhere else

A Games forum, from RPG's to video games to Magic: The Gathering and Game Theory.

Actually, having just read the above posts, a RPG/Gaming forum seems like a good - and by good I mean much needed - idea.

I think it might be a better idea to look at the forums we have now, see what topics are getting a lot of activity and using that as a guide. I know the 9/11 forum came into being because it because a big issue and attracted a lot of posts.

That's one of the reasons I brought up the health-exerise type forum. If you look at the Conversation and the headshop, you'll see a number of different topics on health, such as being a vegetarian and the like.

Surely there are other places where one could discuss role-playing and video games?

well, while i wouldn't really be participating in it, i'm sure that's what some other people say about "comics." if the masses want it... and here's another vote for a physical living forum. you just know people would use it.

Funny, I was thinking about the possibility of a games forum. The deciding factor would have to be whether there are enough people interested to make it viable. A show of hands?

As for its worth, we all accept that games are an inferior, intellectually bankrupt pastime - just like comics.

Actually, I was thinking of suggesting a games forum, but didn't know how well it'd go over. If you think about it, it'd fit perfectly in the spectacle.

While there are other places you can discuss games, have any of you been to one of those places lately? I mean, some of those topics are laughable. "These are the elite members of this forum, bow down and worship them". Yes, that was a real topic.

i think of barbelith as the refuge for intelligent people on the internet, who just hapen to have bad grammar. anything should be able to be discussed, as long as significant portions of the community participate.

I'd like to see a Philosophy/Religion forum, or perhaps just a Philosophy forum.

I kinda thought the Headshop was the Philosophy forum? The games forum comes up every few months, whether Tom asks for submissions or not.

Is that part of the direction in which /(you)/ want the community to go?

how about a roving forum? one that focuses on ONE subject for say, a month. moderated by, say, the person who suggested it, as well as one of the regular moderators. so, if people wanted a pirate forum, they could get one. if they wanted one on wrestling, they get one the following month. one on video games the month after that.

we do this over at the sequential tart message boards, and it's been really successful. when the month is up, if there are still active threads going, they get moved into a more appropriate forum so they can continue.

All this clamouring for a new forum about games- but where are the threads discussing it at the moment? At least before the staggeringly underused art and design forum came intobeing there WERE regular threads about art- aside from the "isn't new ame X kewl" and the interesting everquest economy threads there hasn't really been any to my mind.

The roving forum is an interesting idea.

I would love a religion/spirituality/philosophy forum. I think that would be a lot of fun. But would it be used? Look at Art. And not sure if religion/spirituality is fine underneath the headshop.

I'm anti-game rpg forum, but mainly for the selfishly biased that I don't do much of either. Unless we're talking croquet, scrabble and drinking games that is...

Personally, I would go for a football forum but not entirely seriously. The spectacle is lopsided though. Needs another topic to fit nicely into the grid on the page.
I like the name playground. What about a forum for various games. That would include sport, gaming, general amusement. We have creation for creative play what about the playground for uncreative play. We have art, comics, music, books, tv...what else would fit nicely into that grid?

An Ideas forum, for suggesting original ideas to problems, new products, political systems, whatever. First post is the idea, all subsequent posts to be criticism, developments, alternative ways to do same thing etc. (Basically, halfbakery.com with a Barbelith slant)

Research forum, for those seeking info on subjects raised in Barbelith threads, or more general 'lith related matters. A way to share and make use of our vast collective knowledge.

I've said it before, so I'll repeat myself here: I kind of miss the old any-old-unregistered-whoever-can-post, "Help me with my new diet" Help forum.

Cherry: religion/spirituality is (theoretically) in the territory of The Magick. Reular discussion covers all kinds of stuff, from Taoism to good v. evil theology.

Thiazi: philosophy is (theoretically) under the rubric of Headshop.

If either of you aren't getting what you want out of those fora, by all means imagine the discussion you want to be having, then write the first word for it.

The idea of a "physical living" forum interests me, but I also think in some ways this is covered by the Coversation. In many ways, a message board is "thinkspace" and the stuff that happens in "meatspace" (like workouts, diets, recipes, sex) is tangential... and winds up in the Conversation. A "body shop" forum, I can just picture filling with the sexy stuff that does quite well in the Conversation (thank you kindly).

Actually, Research strikes me a sa good 'un, as at the moment requests for info are scattered between areas intended for discussion - also, it would stop a request for info turning into an argument between people who already had it, as requests for info iun the Swithcboard and Head Shop are wont to do...

or preferably post and participate- As has been stated elsewhere in this thread- if you think a forum could be improved or there is a subject that comes under its broad remit that has not been fully addressed you then start a thread that does...

I'm all for an RPG/gaming/whatever forum, just because, as I've said in the past, I love the concepts of such things but am frequently put off by the fact that, by and large, they're all shit.
And I'm sure that with the contribution of the many imaginative and intelligent people that post here, much fun could be had with such ideas..

How about an entire role-playing thread, where we all role-play characters in an Invisibles cell, like a MUD? That would be way cool.

I like the idea of a "The Gaming" forum. It could in theory cover more than just RPGs, such as gaming in general like strategy games (chess, bridge etc) or even sports. Hey, I've seen Magic: The Gathering tourneys on ESPN, why not swing the other way, eh? Count my vote for it. I'll even offer to moderate for it if it happens.

I like the "roving forum" idea. But I don't know how practical that is for Tom and Cal (I don't even pretend to know how this shit works.) BUT that aside, I like the idea.

A gaming forum would be of some interest.

Despite Haus's indication that such things should be discussed elsewhere, I think that a sigificant enough proportion of the population of this board has an interest that such a forum would be valid and appreciated.

On a lighter note, how much of a bag of salt should be taken with Haus's "way cool" comment?

you know, complacency is not identical with "leaving something alone that works perfectly." do people really feel like there are vast discussions going undiscussed because there's not an appropriate category to post in?

not that i tend to resist change for the hell of it, but was "new coke" really an improvement to the beverage market?

Not so much an unmissed opportunity for discussion, IMHO. More of an improved filing system and additional stimulation to discussion that may not otherwise exist.

Why don't we stuff the gaming forum into the television forum and call it "Satan's work" with a disclaimer not to offend any satanists who might post here.
