This is so blatantly incorrect. It's a pitiful, weak defence. It may stand up if there were a consistent history of objection to gay flirting, which it seems that there isn't.

What het flirting establishes is that in todays society there is a potential element of sexuality in interpersonal relationships. That there is heteronormacy is a painful fallacy under which you foolishly labour.

To specify that het flirting as cause of near instant thread-rot simply reinforces your application of a double standard.

As for the little thing, if I had a problem with offending you, I wouldn't have called you hypocrite.

Oh dear God, heterodox... talk about flame bait... obviously het flirting is going to reify heteronormacy - it's scarcely going to re-establish homonormacy, is it. I think we can all agree that mainstream culture is not exactly dominated by queer discourse - and that in fact some organs of mainstream culture do object to queer flirting - the 'norm' for mainstream culture is heterosexuality. So het flirting in whatever context re-establishes the norms of mainstream culture in a way which is prescriptive and excludes those who are not heteronormative.

I object to flirting in general, but then I am a grumpy old sourpuss.

It's all well and good to reference mainstream culture, but Haus specifically listed the Head Shop, which is a far cry from mainstream culture and thus the argument is irrelevent.

well, a poster on another board (full of elitist assholes and their hapless cronies, who may very well be reading this as you do) has found out about you and I and are laughing at us. hmm. at first I was a bit embarrassed, I admit it - the inane nature of a lot of our posts, in particular my own pointless and aggressive ones, can be very easily used as an argument against intelligence and forward thought. and hey, lets admit it - assholery is rampant on this board. its what we do - after all, its a comedy magazine group. what the fuck does anybody want? this other board, which claims to be "revolutionary", is seemingly led by a catty bitch-boy who has chosen some threads of ours to display on that board in an effort to taunt all of us in general, and attack me specifically (my stupid ass wont sit back and be cowed by his superior intellect - therefore he insists on making it personal at every chance). as soon as someone mentioned this boards name, he fell all over himself to find it and extract some juicy bits to post on that board. and that includes posts about/from a lot of you, not just myself
so my question is, what do you think of all of this? some snotty bastard quoting our posts on another board and referring to us all as “chuckleheads” (I kid you not)?

Now, this is very funny indeed. Especially the "personal" bit - did you lose the private message where you demanded to know if I had ever been raped, and if not how I could possibly feel able to talk about crime, in the board changeover, BK? I have copies...

Oh, and just to explain - the bits I have quoted have been entirely random, to illustrate the difference between the two boards - which heteroboy at the back there is apparently aware of...so don;t look at me. Didn't mean to be snide, though...

I'm aware of the subtlties of the outside world just as much as you are, even to the extent that I live in a country where queer flirting is not fraught with the dangers which face you in the country you live in.

I act up because you advance viewpoints, and then fly into a rage if anyone dares to disagree with them. Because you appear wilfully (but I increasingly suspect, accidentally) to misunderstand any post that allows you to claim another inch of moral high ground. Because your only recourse in debate is, in case nobody has noticed, hurling obscenities. Because if anybody dares to disagree with any opinion of yours preceded by the phrase "as a mother" or cognate (crime thread, anyone), you treat it as a personal attack on your child and the raising of it, and thus feel entitled to - you guessed it - throw yet more personal abuse.

Because, to provide a little context - you demanded to know if I had been mugged (again on the crime thread) and then, when it turned out that I had, decided to raise the game yet further. Because you simply misunderstand about (at a guess) a half of what people say unless they avoid any ambiguity, and then fly into screaming, attention-seeking tantrums, particularly annoying in the Head Shop.

Because, essentially, you have been hurling childish abuse at me for about three months now, which would not be so bad if you only had some more *adjectives*.

As for scruples, dignity and integrity - I fear that our motivations will remain obscure to one another pretty well in perpetuity. Without wishing to suggest the primacy of either, I think that our perspectives are completely and totally alien. I have no doubt that we both feel that the one is more justified than the other. I think he's implying - nay, stating - that it hasn't happened. He's challenging you to find a precedent which contradicts him; in this situation, 'substance' would indeed be a more useful a debating point than incredulousness alone. I'm unsure as yet whether I agree with Haus's point, Heterodox, but I'm interested to see what example(s) you do find...

Ironically, this particular thread isn't any more intelligent than the typical Fade to Black thread, and this is not confined to F2Bers. Is the chuckleheadedness infecting Barbelith? I suggest that any of you who want to visit F2B are well advised to first encase yourself in a plastic bubble, but I fear my advice is too late.
