and apparently, the towers were built supposedly ABLE to withstand direct plane hits. the theory is that there were more explosives on the planes.... and projected casualties (cablepulse24, toronto) are at 50,000. (11 am, here) shit.

1) it seems like suicide to the arabs, and don't forget Oklahoma was a nice white american lad

2) Bush was waiting for this, right? He's vindicated, no one will stop him now

So, more than likely this is going to be some beyond fucked up shit involving bush throwing bombs around or something else horrible to get some WAR going on.

I'm not too caught up on political theory or anything but what alternative action could be had? Advantages/Disadvantages to them (theoretical or experience through history)?

does this need its own thread?

Ok. It's been confirmed that the Pentagon was hit by a plane. The Mayor of NY has ordered the complete exacuation of lower Manhattan.

During the OK bombing Canada was blamed for being a haven for terrorists. The border has been closed. I have friends over there who can't get back again.

Please don't push the button, George.

Exactly. It's a perfect chance for Bush, Blair et al to reaffirm 'civilised' values. Plus against the background of global recession that this is going to jumpstart, war is the only way to save the american economy.

Rubin was on the BBC spouting all kinds of worrying bullshit about half an hour ago...

Can you imagine the amount of planning that it took?

And another thing; no attack on the Net? No disinformation, no communication systems down? I mean, who did this? If they had the power for such an action, thay could have gone further

* Oliver Stone syndrome * again - it seems way too professional and suicidal for arabs. the yanks want to carpet bomb the entire arab peninsula

as far as potential fall guys/ culprits go Afganistan is looking like a likely candidate, especially since the leader of the US friendly (or at least less US hostile) faction was reportedly assiasinated recently...

Arafat has just condemned the perpetrators and the action. and (in fear, I think) offered his regret and sympathy.

A few stray thoughts:

1. This kind of action has been recognised as a possibility for a long time. Tom Clancy's novel 'Executive Orders' begins with a scenario much like this one (even, perhaps, a bit milder).

2. Whilst the hard line will inevitably get a boost from this, I don't know what I'd suggest as a 'soft' response. Does anyone else? It's all very well to bemoan the probably violent response. Do we have an alternative.

3. Can someone close that fucking thread in the Magick before I nip over to Greenland with a very large stick?

4. If there is a state involved, even as a shelter, the US will be at war with it as soon as the link is established. Putin has already offered his sympathy, and I sincerely doubt China is involved...which means whoever did this has no shield.

If they're American, we just saw the death of the militias.

Why do you assume that if they're American it's the militias? I know the movement, man, and they wouldn't do anything like that. When Oklahoma happened they were all trying to distance themselves from McVeigh. A lot of them even accused him of being a goverment agent. As for who did it, I don't even want to speculate since we have no information. Then again if the feds know that the planes have been hijacked do they know who hi-jacked them? I would think that to be a sure fire way to find out who's behind this.

just a few news snippets flying around irc that may be of interest. Like nick i am very interested in alternative action. anyone?

quote:
LONDON (Reuters) - Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he and his followers would carry out an unprecedented attack on U.S. interests for its support of Israel, an Arab journalist with access to him said Tuesday.

Abdel-Bari Atwan, editor of the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper said Islamic fundamentalists led by bin Laden was "almost certainly" behind the attack of the World Trade Center in New York.

"It is most likely the work of Islamic fundamentalists. Osama bin Laden warned three weeks ago that he would attack American interests in an unprecedented attack, a very big one," Atwan told Reuters.

Unless the terrorists came from within (the Militia, which seems just as likely considering the targets) then I can't help but see the public wanting to strike out at more than just a terrorist group.

I don't think this could possibly be a state sponsored attack. Seriously, any country which launched an attack like this would face annihilation.

I'm just amazed that, what, four or five planes could be hijacked like this.

The New York Mayor is saying that a tremendous number of lives have been lost.

why the USA? Why not Telaviv or something? Killing the peace process, giving all excuses to Sharon and Bush to invade Palestine and wipe it out; opening a sort of cull on arab immigrants in the States; plunging the american economy and you know it's the poorer countries that suffer the most...I mean why not hit Sharon, at least?

Sorry, it's too simple

News report (Radio 1?) just suggested that it's Osama Bin Laden, claiming that a speech of his, three weeks ago, called for the US to stop supporting Israel or face the worst terrorist campaign the world has seen. I repeat, I just heard this in passing, it's not verified.

Camp David was just hit by a plane, too, apparently, according to an AIM contact.

A thought: it's not daylight on the west coast yet, is it?

Of course, I'm not too familiar with Bin Laden's pretensions. He's a rogue agent and I don't know which powers does he obey, what cause exactly. But this seems...i dunno, simple. And he warned them ?!

Probably because it's Little David Striking Down Goliath and by doing so will win further support for their cause, showing that there's not that much to be afraid of.... but.... as ever it's never that simple
