It's TWO planes!!! Fucking hell! They deliberately crashed into each tower. The BBC say they looked like private executive planes. I'm watching the video footage now. Oh, the first plane was a small, twin engine passenger plane. Capacity 8-10. Possibly Lear jets.

It really looks like a targetted attack.

One of the planes was hijacked, they haven't said whether there were any passengers on either plane.

It is believed one of the aircraft was a United Airlines 737 twin-engine plane carrying 150 passengers.

The first aircraft slammed into the top of one of the twin towers. As smoke billowed over the city, a second jet - also a United Airlines plane - swooped from the sky and struck the other tower, in an almost identical incident .

An eyewitness said the first aircraft crashed into the top of the taller tower, near the 107th floor. Each plane slammed into the southern side of a tower and exited the other side, the crashes just 18 minutes apart.

It is not clear how many people have been injured or killed. The accidents occurred about 9am, New York time, in clear weather

There are fears the towers could collapse due to structural damage.

A palestinian group, the Democratic front for the liberation of Palestians abroad have claimed responsibility (but it seems likely that various groups will try to claim credit for this attack).

Hi. I work about a fifteen minute walk from the trade center. At about 9 o clock people came to my floor to look outthe windows to see the smoke from the first plane (I'm on the 31st floor of a building near wall street). People thought that that was a small plane. I went back to work. Then, about 15-20 minutes later, the buliding shook with two booms. Coworkers of mine who were watching said that a 747 size jet crashed right into the second tower. They said it looked like Die Hard or something. I immediately took the elevator down and tried to get home. Some of the subways are closed. Since when they tried to bomb the world trade center in 91, they planned also to blow up subway stations, you better belive I was holding my breath all the way to Brooklyn. Hopefully my girlfriend is able to get home soon.

It's a sickening sight from lower Fifth Avenue, where I work. Black fumes pouring forth and bits and pieces of building breaking off (We're on 23rd Street, about 2-3 miles away, so It's a bit hard to tell.) People are crowding around the street corners with tears in their eyes. It's a strange feeling of helplessness.
