not sure where they would appear... the Magik? you decide. I'd like to suply some images for them as well.

also how would you want the articles... .txt, html, word?

I like them to be plain text or rtf - ideally not full of line breaks at the end of every line. I'm thinking of adding a submissions form to barbelith.com to handle the transition and to get everything in the right format.

If you want to send images, try to make one of them AS STRONG AND WITTY OR INSIGHTFUL as possible - and make that one 238x187 px - sometimes I'll choose another image anyway so don't kill yourself over it, or send me the original and I'll resize it. At the moment, I also use two images of 110x110 px for the articles themselves, but don't know if that's going to stay like that...

Please send articles as soon as you can. I'm trying to make sure that there is new content on the site every other day at least, but it's proving difficult to maintain at the moment...

I've just sent you something as a word document - I'll send it again in rtf. Soz!

Hey, TC (the indisputable leader of the gang) - you still after submissions for Music? 'Cause I can do you an article on why Marillion are really good and I'm just going to shut the fuck up now.

Tom, I wrote an article on a singer/songwriter named Rufus Wainwright sometime last week, and emailed it to you -- did you never get it???

Do you want something on why fanfiction is (a) really good, (b) serving the cause of the revolution, and (c) the condition of possibility of writing in the first place?

Tom Coates
10:43 / 19.07.01
Sounds great. And yes - I got the Rufus piece and will be running it shortly. MORE PLEASE! EVER MORE!

Interesting, Deva... I'm writing a piece on fanfic as well, though from a very different angle... not anti-fanfic, exactly, but more from a writer's viewpoint, with the central question being Why play with somebody else's toys, when you can create your own?

Might make an interesting pairing, run back-to-back... Care to compare notes? E-mail me, maybe...

Ooh, yes, that does sound interesting - I'll e-mail you about it.

I've got an article entitled 'Quit Your Job' if you want it?

how about short fiction or am i missing the point?

Tom Coates
11:01 / 22.07.01
I don't think short-fiction really fits with the site as is. But I'm well up for the 'Quit your job' piece.

Currently researching energy drinks. What's in 'em, how they taste, unscientific experiments in how well they work. Article potential?

Tom Coates
00:16 / 23.07.01
Soundslike prime article potential to me. And at the moment, i would even take a piece on Marillion - even though that old lady on Banzai systematically beats poor old fish at everything...

Tom, I should have that Runes article to you next week. I'm in the throes of "quitting my job" at the moment (interesting topic to come up now), so that's taking over all my perspective at the moment. I'll have plenty of time to do this soon!

Prepare to slap your forehead in frustration as I reveal that the only article-like thing I've felt the urge to write of recent is 'Grunge and why it is good'. Which is about as high-minded as it sounds.

Don't be absurd. Write the thing. Something will emerge out of it. You're never going to know if you don't put finger to keyboard. And more to the point, I'm not prepared to run a site for BIG GIRLY WUSSES WHO CAN'T PULL THEIR FINGERS OUT! So COME ON YOU GIRLY GIRLS, GET ME YOUR BLOODY ARTICLES...

I bet that someone more magically minded than me could do a piece on the (ahem) "New Age" spirituality in Anime (e.g.: the Gaia lifeforce in "Final Fantasy", the Guardians in "Princess Mononke", the Tree of Life & Angels in "Neon Genesis Evangelion", etc.).

A "Sabotage in the Workplace" article seems like a pretty cool idea. The guy who does the zine Temp Slave! lives in my hometown, although I've never met the guy. The zine was also put together as a musical recently.

I'd also like to see an article on how companies & websites track what you see via cookies. I fuckin' hate those damn things.

Anybody up for article of stuff like Howard Zinn, Lenny Bruce, Scott McCloud, Negativeland/Fair Use, Abbie Hoffman, Umberto Eco, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Larry Gonick, & Noam Chomsky? I'd certainly like to read more, but only have a limited knowledge of said stuff. Actually, I could probably do a Lenny Bruce piece.

I am going to win the lottery tonight as well, so then we can afford to get some real investment in this stuff. In the meantime, I need cheap content - er, I mean, intelligent well-written critical articles of a subcultural disposition ASAP...

AUTOCRITIQUEGO!

No danger in hearing the truth: I of all people know how shallow, overwritten, hasty, florid, and poorly-researched the fucker is. No theory to speak of, staggeringly obvious "insights"--a few cute lines, but really no substance.

I'm capable of much better. At least, I'd like to think so.

Still, every zine needs filler now & then, eh? Glad I could oblige.

Heh, how desperate are ye? I mean, I guess I could bring Mister Whisper out of the mothballs if you're really needing something and if you're cool with some half-ass Dennis Miller flinging the stereotypical e-zine rants about American politics. I just figured people were tired of that stuff.

Tom Coates
08:23 / 30.07.01
Well I'm not DESPERATE as such... I'll just publish any old shit that people give me to fill up the space. That's not the same thing AT ALL...

Talking about any old shit, I saw 'Swordfish' at the weekend and would like to write an article about action films that think they are thought provoking/have artistic merit/are cool. Kind of like a mid-life crisis for the genre.
Wannit?

hey, an article about how's the music scene right now in Brazil would be interesting enough?
If someone can proof-read it, of course...
