I've heard theorizing about that, that Biden will have to bite his often too-biting tongue, but he'll still need to pummel her.
The vice-president, to a certain extent, is as important as the president makes them. Cheney has been much more active than many VPs in crafting policy and orchestrating action. The position in the senate is more important in closely divided senates. In a 50/50 senate, I think that the VP would end up tipping the balance in giving control of senate committees, which is very important also.
Given the fact that McCain is 72, and would be 80 at the end of two terms, the possibility of Palin becoming president is much greater and more relevant. Statistically speaking.

This is worthy of note.

I think it's really important that we emphasise that Palin failed to teach her daughter to abstain and if she can't communicate with one teenager effectively how can she be Vice-President? Perhaps one of those evangelicals who are so happy that the family is pro-life would like to explain all of this to us?

Though the odds of that happening this year are about a million to one.

This does worry me...

Especially in connection with this report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Looks like the only change a McCain-Palin ticket will introduce is to swap the role x ideology of Bush-Cheney. They're going for a relatively secular hawk in the driving seat and a theo-con riding shotgun, instead of today's reverse situation.

I wonder though will neo or theo cons vote for a woman as VP?
Isn't there a whole range of reasons the Religious Right would be uncomfortable with any uterus owner defaulting to President?

If the right had any consistent logic you might have a point but neo-cons are biased against people who aren't neo-cons, they can overlook gender consideration as long as the subject of their consideration is a fundamentalist aggressor.

Thems is fine and scary points.

I wonder how many votes are in play? I guess that would be a percentage question and if of those undecided how the McCain Palin ticket reads? Palin's pro drilling pro life position makes me want shake people by the shoulders especially combined with McCain's pro war agenda.

There's been an interesting aspect of Palin's nomination wandering around online that only her ability to be both a parent and a politician has been raised. I've seen more proactive defense of her and accusations of 'where are the feminists' defending her than I have sen any actual accusations of inability or conflict between the options. In fact I feel from reading online articles the whole bebe thingy is smoke and mirrors deflecting attention from the issue with her ex-brother in law, aka Troopergate.

Look on some far right conservative blogs/news/forums and there is definitely a contingent that thinks that she should stay home to take care of her kids.... that THAT is family values.

Not sure how fascinated I was by that interview.

She stuck to the same talking points that we'll probably hear again and again.

I think she's got a point about there being a sexist bias against both Palin and Clinton, but I noticed neither the reporter nor the advisor mentioned race. And by omitting that it struck me that damned if I can think how Obama can use bias as a rhetorical theme that will do him good in the ratings, esp amongst white working class males. Palin & cadres will IMO undoubtedly claim all kinds of biases - anti-religious, anti-gun, anti-Constitutional, anti-capitalist, HEL anti-life, coming from the bleedin Libs&Dems&Meeja. Some of which most certainly is there.

But what the hell. That women must never ever come near the VP or the Big P chair.

But was there a sexist bias against Hilary? A lot was made of her being a woman, but only for the same reason a lot was made of Obama being black.

It didn't appear to be sexism that cost Hilary the nomination and the only reason the Republicans are repeatedly mentioning sexism now is because they want to lure pissed-off Clinton supporters to their side.

Would they be playing that card if Palin wasn't their VP nominee? Doubtful. Was her sex the reason they chose her as their prospective VP? Possibly.

Is she, in any way, shape or form suited to the job? No. And her sex has nothing to do with it.

I find myself wondering how inflated all the news bits where regarding pissed off Hilary supporters. Could there possibly be that many "women" voters that will jump from one campaign to the other based purely on the participation of a female? Smells like this year's "Values voter."

Re Hilary: There was both the Cosmic Sexist Microwave Slow-Cooking Background Radiation, and talk of "BXXXH!" and other quite obvious markers, from both male and female opponents.

It's a classic policy grab ala David Cameron, IMO, co-opting and assimilating the enemy discourse within your own ideological meta-frame. Basically, re-framing their symbols and arguments so they lend more credence to themselves. Also comes with the option of accusing the other side of selling out on their own ideals for the sake of partisanship: "Look who's sexist now, pinko liberal self-hating assholes".

James Carville can't believe what he's hearing! Youtube link. His face at 6 min. 35 seconds, after she has called his comments on Palin's lack of experience "sexist", is priceless. On the subject of faces, Michele Bachmann's glued on smile is very creepy.

"Only for the same reason a lot was made of Obama being black"? Well, I guess you could say that, in that there was regular and blatant sexism used against Clinton in much the same way as there was and is regular and blatant racism used against Obama. I can't pry into the minds of every voter in the Democratic primary and find out whether sexism did indeed cost her the nomination (working, as it does, less through people saying, "Oooh, she's got a uterus, I'm not going to vote for her," and more through non-conscious shifting of expectations and perceptions as a result of gender; that said, I never quite understood why someone who had so strongly supported one of the nastiest and easily the most unpopular war in modern history and then refused to ever apologise for this was for so long the presumptive nominee), but... well, the fact that it was in play wasn't exactly subtle. I mean, that bloody nutcracker, ferchrissake.

Caught on tape

"Peggy Noonan can also be heard to say "It's OVER!" immediately after Murphy says ".... it's not gonna work!" at about 0:37. Also, it might be important to note that McCain entirely canceled an appearance on CNN's Larry King program, last night, supposedly over a small on-air discussion between Campbell Brown of CNN and a young Republican spokesperson regarding experience and executive power and whether or not that involves a governor having control of the National Guard. Larry wasn't amused."

She's just about to start talking now.

She's a bit stiff, really. Looks like Tina Fey, talks like Cheri Oteri. In character.

She likes her husband, and her mom and dad. And Harry Truman. And small towns.

And the difference between a hockey mom and pit bull is lipstick.

And it all started with the PTA.

Hmm. Interesting comparison.

Double-oh, and now Fark is hosting the video Palin's church pulled down featuring her "Jesus wants us to invade Iraq" speech. A task from God. And the importance of the gift of prophecy. This took place, apparently, three months ago. (And here's Part Two, her encore.)

I'm torn over the gift of prophecy bit, to tell the truth. I have a feeling her revelations and mine wouldn't be the same.

It's pretty much impossible to say for sure whether sexism played an issue in the defeat of Hillary Clinton. Personally, I think it's more attributable to the fact that she was pretty much the boring establishment candidate, and I can't think of anything in particular that she did to stand out. Whereas Obama really is a fantastic speaker and brings a new energy to the table that Hillary couldn't match. I'd argue that racism was a bigger factor in the primaries than sexism, but who can say for sure.

As for the RNC, there's two things that really amaze me. One is the fact that despite being in power for eight years and basically having the run of Washington, they're still hitting those same old themes of wanting to clean up "politics as usual," and reform Washington. They're the ones who've been in charge, shouldn't they have been able to do that already?

The other big question is what exactly Republicans believe now. Do they want lower taxes and smaller government? If so, they probably shouldn't have launched a war and decided to remake a country in their own image for, apparently, no reason other than the desire to spread freedom. But, I suppose that was somehow connected to the 'war on terror,' that oh so nebulous concept that excuses anything that goes on. Still, you'd think most people who ostensibly believe in lower taxes and less government would have a problem with spending one trillion dollars on a war that won't help us in any way. And, if they're so generous with other countries, why not help out our people here at home?

Well, according to Romney last night, that war and all... that was the result of the last 8 years of liberalism in control of the government.

Palin: "What's the difference between a Hockey Mom and a Bulldog?" points to face "Lipstick!"

...

Really?

Nice to see that there %are% feminist Republicans... I know what she was trying to express (I think) but come on; there are better ways to say that one is tenacious.

The "woman needs to be a bulldog to succeed" attitude and the whole, "There will be Drilling!" (Blood? Oil?) makes me a firm believer that if they do get in, it will be doom sandwiches for everyone...

Oh, it wasn't a bulldog, it was a pit bull. This has a different set of associations with Salt of the Earth Middle Americans who know that pits have a fierce reputation and are sometimes bred by football players for dog fights but actually have rather sweet dispositions, for the most part. The Pit Bull is a signifier in league with country music, large belt buckles and pickup trucks.

The crazy bits of Romney's speech start here and go onto the next page. To me, it's obvious that he's redefining "conservative" and "liberal" to suit whatever he wants them to mean. He is not a man to be trusted with a dictionary. But it's a trick that seems to work. The use of the term "Guantanamo terrorists" made me really want to interrogate him.

1000 apologies, I stand (sit) corrected.

Pit Bull.

The dog most likely to suddenly snap, attack, and then need to be put down...

In that context her analogy seems apt: here in Canada hockey parents tend towards being fanatical and will sometimes start fist-fights if they believe that their precious child isn't placed on the pedestal they so rightly deserve. These parents, frothing, then need to be dragged away from the rink, banned along with their children from hockey forever.

There are gentle and docile hockey parents too: depends on their upbringing, I suppose. Still, the potential to snap is always there...
