A friend who works at Fox just told me that a friend of his who works for WB saw the movie and said, in shock & awe: "THE DARK KNIGHT is the best movie Warner Bros. has come out with in the last 10 years." And the guy who said that isn't even a big superhero fan.

Yes, the word is strong with this one.

Going to try and go to the IMAX in London on opening day (July 24th).

Guardian on The Mist sure makes it sound interesting. I haven't been interested in a Stephen King adaptation in *years*.

I downloaded the Mist the other month and fucking loved it. It's not without its flaws, but I haven't seen a horror movie that ballsy for a long, long time. I hate to use the word, but it is genuinely very *dark* indeed.

Grant, in my experience American critics often don't like too much pessimism in their movies. If there's any truth to that, then I'm not surprised they disliked it

Downloaded months ago? I should pay more attention.

I'm not sure if it's that critics don't like unhappy endings as much as there's this pervasive phobia about them in the public at large. The whole deal with focus groups changing the endings of big-budget films (like, recently, I Am Legend) is part of it. Bleak endings (which mean, more or less, a whole pessimistic film) haven't really been "in" since around 1976 or so.

Wall-E is getting tons of rave reviews from CNN, the New York Times, etc., throwing around words like "Classic" and "masterpiece." I'm very psyched for it; seeing it tomorrow. I have always been one of those folks who feels Pixar has yet to produce anything that isn't at least very good or excellent.

and it's about time we had another Johnny 5-type character in the annals of film history!

(I should add that I only downloaded it because it seemed at the time that the film would never be released over here)

Max Payne.

I kind of thought this might work. On the strength of this (which is, admittedly, not that much to go on) I'm now thinking it might not.

The trailer drowned me... purple prose rained down like a bad metaphor...

Dude, that was awesome, sloppy, pulp-noir action. Max Payne has always been awesome, slop- etc, can't be arsed writing it out again.

It looks like it could be a good adaptation of what was, let's face it, a pretty cheesey revenge story.

Not sure about the angel-things. Unless, as I secretly hope, Max is suffering from a big dose of Valkyr throughout the whole thing.

Maxie Max Walhberg has the voice down too.

I might be defending the trailer too much, admittedly, I'm a big fan of the series.

I dunno, it looks pretty much what I'd expect from a Max Payne movie. Gritty voices and things that explode in bullets.

Have to say, I'm actually more enthused for this now than when it was announced. Wahlberg's personailty bypass may actually work in his favour here. The angels looked cool, but I have no idea if they have anything to do with the source material. I only ever played to most of the ways through the first game.

The whole game is laden with Biblical and Norse (yay!) symbolism. One nutter in particular, who is a boss, constantly harps on about Odin, Ragnarok (in a club called Ragna Rock) and the "flesh of fallen angels" which might be where the movie's coming from.

Honestly, if the whole thing is a Lynchian* pulp-noir roaring rampage of revenge in which angels and bullets mix in liminal, drugged-up dream states where symbolism is as real as the gritty, gritty streets then I'll be as happy as fucking Larry.

* not without precendent as Max Payne 2 had a "TV show within a game" in the form of "Address Unknown" a David Lynch thriller about a guy whose evil twin (or is he?) murders his wife (or did he??).

From the wiki

As the mystery deepens, Max (Mark Wahlberg) is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world and face an unthinkable betrayal.

Oh dear.

Yeah, the angels never make an appearence in the games, but their inclusion in that trailer has properly gotten me excited. I'm hoping they drift a good long way away from the source material, plot wise, and dive headlong into the into full-on psychedarkia.

I had no idea a MP film was in the works and I've travelled the gamut of emotions from worst idea ever to Most Anticipated Film in about 4 minutes.

The case for adaptation is an incredibly interesting one as it is, the game being a mix-up of noir comics and films to begin with.

To be honest, it was the angel things that put me off, but having watched it again I'm not too bothered. I always liked the hinting and symbolism in the games, without there ever actually being any supernatural stuff. It just added a lot more layers to what was essentialy a cop story, and I don't know whether it would work as well as a supernatural thriller. But I'm warming to it.

I just hope they keep the music from the games.

I seems to remind me a bit of Constantine, for pretty obvious reasons, and I'm wondering, or reckoning, that might be pretty intentional. Constantine was a movie that I was not fussed about at all until I saw it and really fucking enjoyed it.

Doesn't mean anything about Max Payne, really. But I could be convinced to check it out, pending reviews.

Oliver Stone's made a George Dubya biopic and I can't resist rubbing my hands together with glee. Give a fuck about the Stoner's fists of ham, I hope he gives the bastard the film he deserves.
